iPhone 3GS Jailbroken! A Teenager has Hacked It!

George Hotz, an enterprising teen hacker who goes by the name Purplera1n, won fame and infamy in 2007 when he became the first to free the iPhone from its AT&T U.S. SIM card restrictions.  As a reward, Mr. Hotz won a hot set of wheels -- the Nissan 350Z and a paid consulting job with CertiCell, a cell phone services company.

Now a little older and taller, Mr. Hotz, age 19, has distinguished himself again, becoming the first to publish a jailbreak solution for the iPhone 3G S -- a fix to allow the phone to run apps not approved by Apple.  The first step is to visit Mr. Hotz's page and download the "purplera1n" app.  Mr. Hotz describes the following steps on his blog, writing:

Connect your iPhone normally. Click “make it ra1n”. Wait. On bootup, run Freeze, the purplera1n installer app.

The Freeze installer will install an app called Cydia which allows you to run any application on the iPhone -- Apple approved or not.

Using this newfound freedom, the iPhone's SIM card can be unlocked to run on any network by using the previously released ultrasn0w by the Dev Team.  The Dev Team, not affiliated with Mr. Hotz had published the ultrasn0w app, but had declined to release a fix to jailbreak the iPhone, essentially rendering the app useless (as it was not Apple approved).

The Dev Team had stated that it would release a jailbreak with the OS update v3.1.  Mr. Hotz was frustrated by this, so he took matters into his own hands.  He accuses the Dev Team of delaying the jailbreak release for fear of an Apple patch, chastising, "Normally I don't make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn't how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn't worth waiting because you might have the "last" hole in the iPhone. What last hole...this isn't golf. I'll find a new one next week."

A Windows-compatible version of the iPhone unlocking tool came last week, and this weekend brought a Mac compatible version.  The Windows version is not compatible with Windows 7, according to Mr. Hotz's blog, and it requires the iPhone to be running OS v3.0 and for the latest version of iTunes to be installed.

UltraSn0w: Software method to Unlock iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0 Released

The iPhone Dev Team has released their much awaited software method called Ultrasn0w to unlock iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0.

It's also makes it the world's first software solution to unlock iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0.

The iPhone Dev Team had released their PwnageTool 3.0 for Mac on June 19 to jailbreak iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0 and then followed it up by releasing Redsn0w for both Mac and Windows users on June 20 to jailbreak iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0.

PwnageTool and Redsn0w can also be used to unlock iPhone 2G.

They have just released their much awaited software method called Ultrasn0w to unlock iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0 which can be installed via Cydia or Icy.

Dev Team has published the following instructions:

1. Ensure you have upgraded to iPhone OS 3.0.
2. Jailbreak your iPhone 3G using redsn0w or PwnageTool (this will also install Cydia/Icy).
3. Run Cydia or Icy.
4. Please add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia or Icy. That last “o” is actually the number zero “0”! If you use the letter “o” you’ll get an error.
5. Search for ‘ultrasn0w’ in cydia or icy and install ultrasn0w.
6. Reboot your iPhone 3G.
7. T-Mobile USA users should disable 3G before using ultrasn0w.

Please note that UltraSn0w currently does not unlock Apple's new iPhone 3GS.

But please proceed with caution and don't forget to tell us if you were able to successfully unlock your iPhone 3G.

iPhone 3G unlock gets a massive step closer

Although Apple tried desperately hard to lock out the iPhone Dev Team from ever being able to software unlock the iPhone 3G, the latest video from the Dev Team shows a software 3G unlock is closer than ever!

Have you been patiently waiting for an iPhone 3G unlock to appear?

Well, you’re not alone – millions have wanted a free unlock solution from the iPhone Dev Team, Geohot, Ziphone Zibri or anyone else smart enough to make the unlock happen.

While no 3G unlock has yet been made available, the iPhone Dev Team has posted a video in its blog showing “Custom application execution on the PBM8878”, with the PBM8878 being the “baseband processor” inside the iPhone 3G.

The video shows a connection to the iPhone 3G via SSH, the kernel version, a connection to the basebase, the display of baseband information and then the Dev Team’s PMB8878 baseband tool which is invoked using a “custom AT command”.

Dev Team Strikes Back: QuickPwn 1.1 and Pwnage 2.1 Released

Take that Apple! The Dev Team has gone and done it again and has struck back at Apple with a vengeance. If you were wondering when you would be able to jailbreak the 2.1 firmware wonder no more… Only one day after Apple released firmware 2.1 the Dev Team responded with not only Pwnage 2.1, but QuickPwn 1.1 as well!

While you may have heard about Apple fighting back the other day against jailbreakers with iTunes 8, this has been taken into consideration by the Dev Team and they’ve built in the patches to correct the iTunes error.

By the way we figured out a way to combat iTunes 8 without patches…and we’re waiting to see what Apple tries next. But we think they might want to rethink their priorities. They probably won’t though, and so we get back to the “cat and mouse” game between Apple and the Dev Team and other third-party communities.

This software is for Mac users only so Windows users will have to wait a little longer to jailbreak the 2.1 firmware. It is important to note, there is still no available software unlock method for the iPhone 3G. I’m beginning to think we may not see one anytime soon. State of the iPhone 2.0 Unlock: DevTeam Still Pending, HK Starts Shipping?

We’ve been all over the jailbreak/unlock situation for both the iPhone 3G and the original iPhone 2G updated to 2.0, and here’s the latest.

The iphone-dev team’s pwnage hasn’t been released yet, but will be soon. According to their blog, Apple’s firmware update slowed them down a little, as has the 3G baseband, so what you’ll get short term is:

iPhone (1st Gen) with 2.0 - Activated, Unlocked & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications). iPod Touch with 2.0 - Activated & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications). iPhone (3G) with 2.0 - Activated, Jailbroken (with support for third party applications).

Free iPhone un-bricking solution released

Those of you that decided to find out if Apple was bluffing when they said that unlocked iPhones would be bricked by the iPhone v1.1.1 firmware have undoubtedly found out (the hard way) that Apple was for real. If you’re staring at a “Connect to iTunes” screen on your iBrick, and you just don’t feel like shelling out a C-note for iPhoneSIMfree’s premium un-bricking service, the iPhone Dev Team has come to your rescue.

Well, actually, it’s a subset of the iPhone Dev Team that’s released the new unbricking solution - the iPhone “Elite” Team. The “Elite” guys have released a downgrade solution that will take your bricked iPhone from v1.1.1 to a fully functioning v1.0.2. This solution basically restores your iPhone’s phone functions, but reverts your firmware back to v1.0.2 in the process. But, be warned, the 18-step process requires a bit of familiarity with the hacking tools described on the iPhone Dev Wiki.

Preliminary iPhone 1.1.1 'Jailbreak', Ringtones Soon?

When Apple released the iPhone 1.1.1 update, they broke a number of 3rd party hacks for the iPhone. This included all 3rd party applications as well as ringtone applications such as iToner.

TUAW reports that the iPhone Dev team has found a way to "jailbreak" 1.1.1. "Jailbreak"-ing is the process that allows 3rd party developers to deploy their applications to the iPhone. This accomplishment paves the way to re-open the iPhone to 3rd party apps.

The technique is very preliminary and not yet ready for public release, and will likely require developers to recompile of many of the existing iPhone applications.

Meanwhile, iToner 1.0.3 will be undergoing beta testing shortly, which should re-introduce Ringtone support into iPhone 1.1.1.

Hackers post tips for reversing iPhone upgrade

Owners of hacked iPhones have begun posting instructions on how to roll back a recent Apple firmware upgrade that rendered their mobile phones unusable.

The instructions were available Monday on the iPhone Dev Wiki, a Web site devoted to iPhone software hacks and tools.

Since the iPhone's launch, enthusiasts have been developing ways to allow the devices to run unauthorized software and to unlock them so that they can be run on any mobile network. Late last week, however, Apple cracked down on these efforts by releasing a software upgrade that made hacked iPhones unusable.

Since that release, however, hackers have been working on techniques that reverse the effects of this upgrade.

These latest instructions allow users to roll back their firmware upgrades and use some functions such as the phone's iPod and Wi-Fi capabilities, but they do not necessarily restore the phone's ability to make calls, according to the iPhone Dev Wiki. That's because hackers have not yet found a way to roll back the firmware used by the iPhone's baseband chip, which is used to make calls.

iPhone Rehacked: iPhone Dev Team 2, Apple, Inc 0

iPhone rehacked? Unconfirmed sources report that the iPhone Dev Team has rehacked the Apple iPhone after the latest firmware update. The iPhone Dev Team group that did the new hack was lead by Swedish teen wonder hacker Nutzipper. The iPhone Dev Team claims the rehack was accomplished in just 17 hours and was a group effort that included over 100 volunteer coders. The hack is expected to be posted in a few days as the installer app to implement it is completed. "It looks like round two of the iPhone war is going to the iPhone Dev Team." Says phone expert Olin Pots. "I gotta tell you I'm not surprised. The iPhone Dev Team is a large group of highly motivated people with nothing better to do. They probably outnumber the Apple coders on this project by 4 to 1. I think it is going to be a losing battle for Apple."

iPhone unlockTeam hits back at Apple’s threat

The development team that hacked the iPhone have issued a statement in responce to Apple’s recent statement on unlocked iPhones.

They have promised that within the next couple of weeks they will have a tool that will restore your unlocked iPhone to it’s factory settings, so no need to worry about the upcomming update from Apple.

Here’s what they had to say:

"iPhone Dev Team" issues statement

A spokesman for the iPhone Dev Team, the group that developed the iPhone unlock has issued a statement condemning Apple and promising a tool in the next week which will restore your iPhone to a factory-fresh state. The unlock, he writes, made the iPhone free and useful world-wide, not just in certain countries. The text of the statement, with modifications for grammar and spelling, follows after the break.

Official Open-Source IPhone Unlock GUI Arrives

Anyone frustrated by the command-line iPhone unlocking process now has reason to celebrate.

The iPhone Dev Team has released anySIM, a simple-to-use GUI package for unlocking your iPhone. Just install it as a PXL package and you can free up the device to be used by any GSM carrier with one click. The first version was released on Friday night, and an update to fix a few bugs was pushed out over the weekend (We know we're a bit late reporting this one, but we've been busy snorkeling for diamonds up in wine country and we'd be remiss if we didn't bring you the news).

You can find several links to download the open-source app on the iPhone Dev Wiki. Erica Sadun, the TUAW writer and coder who participated in the creation of the GUI, noted that the package should also show up in the Installer.app menu soon -- I just refreshed and I didn't see it, but hold out hope.

Erica worked with a small team to push this out in under a week. It's a small app, but its creation was no small task -- kudos to all who contributed.

iPhone Dev Team announces free GUI iPhone Unlock Tool

The iPhone Dev Team has released a simple-to-use GUI tool that allows you to unlock your iPhone for use with any SIM. The tool, which is based on their previous command-line work, provides one-touch speedy unlocking. This is a big improvement on the first generation release. It no longer requires you to use special files or to dump nor data.

You can download your copy from the DevTeam website, as a PXL package or, soon, from Installer.app. "Wheat" is the guy responsible for those amazing graphics.

Find out more at the #iphone channel at irc.osx86.hu. Remember, this is early software and unstable. If risk isn't your thing, you'll probably want to wait a few days or weeks for things to stabilize.

Update: After reports of failed unlocks, Sam has updated the version to fix a timing issue. Current version is now 1.0.1, which solves the timing issue.

Update 2: I know of a youtube hack and have heard third-hand of a Visual Voicemail hack. Will post when I have details.

iUnlock released: the first free, open source iPhone SIM unlock software

It looks like the battle's officially over between iPhoneSIMfree and the numerous unique groups of open source hackers trying to software SIM unlock the iPhone. As we've been following in our previous post on the topic, earlier this afternoon iUnlock, the first free, open source iPhone SIM unlock app, was released to the underground just 74 days after the iPhone's release. Developed by the iPhone Dev Team, it's not (yet) for the faint of heart and it takes a little longer to do its magic than iPhoneSIMfree's method, but it works.

To pull this off you'll need iUnlock + nor + the .fls file, which is available in ZIPs all over. We've got the app here, but this package doesn't include all of the files necessary. Good list of links here, or try here, here, here, here, and here.

"iPhone Dev Team" releases iUnlock software

Only a day after the release of the iPhoneSimfree software to retailers, the enterprising "iPhone Dev Team" has managed to reproduce the functionality for a much more appealing price: free.

Twelve dedicated coders, known only as Daeken, Darkmen, guest184, gray, iZsh, Nightwatch, pytey, roxfan, Sam, uns, Zappaz, and Zf, have managed to decipher the unlocking codes for the iPhone and are making their software available to the world for download -- and at the miniscule size of 6,458 bytes.

While a direct link cannot be provided to the unlocking software, it has been tested and confirmed working. It remains to be seen if updating the iPhone will disrupt the functionality, but testing will continue and updates will be provided as events warrant.

Even with the small size of the unlock code, websites hosting the file or discussion of the procedure, such as hackint0sh.org, are being brought to a crawl by hordes of visitors. With the recent $200 price cut to the 8GB model and newfound freedom from AT&T, iPhone orders may rise sharply in the next few hours alone.
