Does Free iPhone Software Pay?

Developers of certain high-profile iPhone applications have discovered a stream of significant, new-platform money. Smaller developers have also been able to generate modest income, with the first paychecks for many coders now received from Apple.

One category of revenue intake many developers are closely watching is that of free-to-paid conversion. Since no real shareware model exists for the iPhone, some developers have decided to offer free, limited-functionality versions of their applications alongside paid, full-functionality versions. The question is whether or not users will convert to the paid version after having used (or at least downloaded) the free version.

Stats from one developer paint a fairly grim portrait, though not one that is wholly out of line with shareware conversion rates for other platforms.

Free iPhone Apps: The Keepers

If you have been having as much as I have wih the iPhone apps, then there is no doubt that you’ve come across numerous apps that deserve no more than a few launches. After a few weeks of looking for the best iPhone apps, here are some that I found are genuinely awesome (in roughly the order of appearance on my phone).

Palringo [iTunes Link]
As of the time of writing, this is the only free IM app on the store and it works pretty decently. Its interface is slightly cluttered and you need to make a special Palringo account to use it, but once it’s set up it’s a good app.
See also: Meebo (Web App),

1Password [iTunes Link]

I own the 1Password application for Mac and syncing my data between the computer and the phone is seamless. Setup is easy, interface is beautiful, and overall, really handy. As far as I know, you don’t need the paid desktop version to use the iPhone app.

Facebook [iTunes Link]

I have this app for one feature only: mobile picture uploading. Everything else is just icing on the cake. If you don’t need a dedicated facebook app, then you may be interested in just Facebook’s mobile site.

Remote [iTunes Link]

Even though I don’t need to use a remote for my iTunes library that desperately, this app’s installation simplicity and concept makes it a keeper just in case.

Last.fm [iTunes Link]

Last.fm is really handy when you finally become tired of your 16gb of music. I just wish there is a scrobbling feature like from the jailbroken days. (And yes, I am aware that Apple won’t allow background processes.) You’ll need a free Last.fm account first.
See also: Seeqpod (Web App)

Shazam [iTunes Link]

Shazam uses the microphone to record a sample of some music and identifies it for you. The coolness of this app and potential handiness makes it a keeper.
See also: Midomi

Evernote [iTunes Link]

The iPhone app lets you take text, picture, and voice notes and sync with the desktop version of Evernote. Free Evernote accounts have a 40MB limit but that should be plenty for text notes.
See also: YouNote

Movies [iTunes Link]

Possibly the most feature packed movies app I’ve seen so far. Movies shows you upcoming and current movies, theatres near you, newly released DVDs, and more. It even plays trailers! :)
See also: Showtimes

Zenbe Lists [iTunes Link]

A simple but elegant list app that syncs with Zenbe online.

Five Tips to Pick the Right iPhone Download Site

iPhone owners are the proudest techno owners of the latest technology gizmos. It is not surprising that they are looking for unlimited iPhone downloads to load their gadgets. After all, with an 8GB flash drive and battery life that allows for video playback of up to 7 hours and audio playback of up to 24 hours, you can listen to music on your phone for a long time. So here we are with 5 cool tips to pick the right download site for unlimited iPhone downloads.

Always do some basic homework first and look around for great deals. If you own an iPod, then you would be glad to know that several download sites also provide music, movies, videos and game downloads for iPods as well. So you get a 2-in-1 combo deal when you download your iPhone music and movies there.

1. Price of the Downloads - Free, Paid Per Membership or Per Download

This is important. There are many sites that offer so called free iPhone downloads. My advice is to avoid them all together. Why? There have been complaints from users about spyware, adware and virus exposures when downloading from these sites. The free services would require you to install client software and in the process, these harmful applications get onto your computer, resulting in slower PC performance.

Your Iphone is a unique gadget, and as much as it is one of the most notable devices existing in the market, you have to fill it with the right types of compatible software. Essentially a communication tool and a portable music/movie player in one, you are assured of unequaled diversion with the Iphone wherever you may be.

Free Iphone movie downloads can be obtained through the internet, and the key here is choosing a website that can provide you with all the movie titles you require, possibly in the most popular of genres. Apple’s online store or Itunes has a huge library of music, games, and movie downloads. Here you are sure to find all the movies that you wish to save in your Iphone, in exchange for an approximate price of $0.99 per download.

If you want the best downloads, you have to look for one that offers first-rate quality, no more, no less. Official tethering option for iPhone on the way?

It seems Apple and AT&T are in talks regarding adding a tethering option to the iPhone. One user emailed Apple to complain about the lack of this feature, especially considering it is offered on most other smartphones for $30/month.

Supposedly, Steve Jobs replied and said:

We agree, and are discussing it with ATT.

Steve

Interesting. AT&T actually does offer a tethering option for their other smartphones for, you guessed it, $30 a month. But the iPhone has been excluded from this. For those who don’t know, tethering is a feature that allows a user to connect to the Internet through their cell phone. In effect, turning their phone into an Internet connection for a laptop. As you may remember, Nullriver’s Netshare was pulled from the App Store recently because it offered this very feature.

12 Great Free Games for the iPhone and iPod Touch

Why should you put a dent in your wallet when there are so many great free applications out there for the iPhone and iPod Touch? There are tons of games for the devices, but the vast majority of them cost money, so we’ve sorted through and located 12 totally free ones for you to throw on your gadgets and entertain yourself throughout the day.

Unlike with Firefox or WordPress addons, where we always tell you not to load everything we list, there doesn’t seem to be any problem with loading lots of iPhone or iPod Touch apps. Just make sure you have enough memory for the programs and you can easily load all 12 of these on your device.

Originally this list included Tris, but with yesterday’s news that it would be removed we took it off the list. It’s really too bad as it was a great port of the game.

Huge iPhone Security Flaw Opens All Private Information

There's a huge security problem in the latest iPhone 2.0.2: if you have your JesusPhone password protected, using a very simple trick gives anyone full access to your cellphone private information in Mail, SMS, Contacts, and even Safari. The two-step trick is even simpler to the one used in the past to gain access to the phone to install unlocking cards or jailbreak. Fortunately, there's a way to avoid this obvious security breach until Apple fixes it.

First, password protect your phone and lock it. Then slide to unlock and do this:

1. Tap emergency call.
2. Double tap the home button.

Done. You are now in your favorites. This seems like a feature, because you may want to have emergency number in your favorites for quick dial. The security problem here is double. The first: anyone picking up your phone can make a call to anyone in your favorites. On top of that, this also opens access to your full Address Book, the dial keypad, and your voice mail.

U.K. Says iPhone Ads Are Too Misleading for TV

Microsoft, Verizon, and other Apple critics have found a supporter in the Britain's regulators

Apple has been a pain in the side of carriers such as Verizon and others vested in the cell phone industry, such as rival Microsoft. They have attacked the iPhone, but have been unable to dent its strong sales. Now the iPhone's detractors may have found some relief in the form of an unlikely ally -- the Britain's regulatory boards.

The U.K. has banned the current set of iPhone ads from appearing on TV in the country. It says its Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), the independent regulatory agency in charge of regulating television, received two complaints that Apple's claims in the ads that its phone could access all of the internet were misleading due to its lack of Java or Flash support, essential to accessing much of the internet.

The ASA sided with the consumer and concluded that the ad was inaccurate. It proceeded to contact Apple about the perhaps deceptive nature of the ads.

5 cool free iPhone apps

Everyone loves new apps, especially when they're free :D So here are my top 5 must haves:

1) Facebook - Works really well, prefer it to the laggy ajax monstrosity hosted on the .com site.

2) Simplify - Free to the first 100,000 users, allows you to stream music from your PC to your iphone anywhere! Works with 3g or wifi.

3) Daily Sudoku - A nice clean interface, 7 new puzzles a day, great for bus journeys.

4) iTM Midilab - Posted about this before, a great little app to turn your iPhone into a midi controller!

5) Finally, a neat little app called Shazam. Used to be a paying service for mobile phones, now a free app. Ever heard a song playing and not know what it is? Hold your iPhone up to the speakers for 10 seconds and shazam tells you what song is playing, loads of info and gives you a link to itunes store if it is avaliable there.

Universities Give Out Free iPhone To Freshmen

At least four institutions — the University of Maryland, Oklahoma Christian University, Abilene Christian and Freed-Hardeman — have announced that they will give the devices to some or all of their students this fall.

Another 2, Standford University and MIT have such plan as well.

Is that necessary? Or is that just a way to woo students? But Standford University and MIT are both rather well known institutes and with good reputations. I don’t think they need such tactic to woo students. I don’t know about the other 4.

On the other hand…

Robert S. Summers, who has taught at Cornell Law School for about 40 years, announced this week — in a detailed, footnoted memorandum — that he would ban laptop computers from his class on contract law.

“I would ban that too if I knew the students were using it in class,” Professor Summers said of the iPhone, after the device and its capabilities were explained to him. “What we want to encourage in these students is active intellectual experience, in which they develop the wide range of complex reasoning abilities required of the good lawyers.”

Welcome, Freshmen. Have an iPod.

Actors paid to line up for iPhone launch

WARSAW (Reuters) - When Apple Inc rolled out its iPhone in the United States, some fans paid big money to be among the first to get their hands on the device. In Poland, people are getting paid to line up.

"We have these fake queues at front of 20 stores around the country to drum up interest in the iPhone," a spokesman said.

As part of a marketing campaign ahead of the iPhone's Friday launch in Poland, the country's largest mobile operator Orange is paying dozens of actors to stand in queues.

Apple sold about one million of the new iPhone models in the United States around the July launch weekend, but buyers in Poland may be reluctant to pay hefty monthly charges.

There were no queues at T-Mobile's Era stores, which will also due to launch the iPhone on Friday.

Myst PC game being remade for the iPhone

Lovers of PC games rejoice! Myst, developed by Cyan, will soon be coming to the iPhone. And when you think about it, this is probably one of the best game port choices so far.

Free iPhone GUI PSD (Photoshop File)

Over the past few months we’ve had to create a few iPhone mock ups for presentations. The problem we’ve encountered is the lack of resources to help us design something efficiently. Up until now we’ve used a nice PSD from 320480.com but we still found ourselves having to build out additional assets or heavily modifying bitmap based buttons and widgets.

Since we know we’ll be doing more of this, we created our own Photoshop file that has a fairly comprehensive library of assets – all fully editable.

Download it here: iPhone_GUI.zip (5MB)

It’s a work in progress, we’ll repost as it gets updated.

Minor updates for v1.1:

  • changed document to 160ppi
  • added number and symbol keyboard views
  • added key press
  • added address book alphabetical navigation widget
  • added plus icon
  • added new checked and unchecked elements

Lightning Review: iPhone Tetris App

Picture 9The App: Tetris with excellent touch implementation. In a matter of seconds anyone will be comfortably rotating, placing and flicking blocks around the screen, and the block placement preview is a welcome addition.

The Price: $9.99

The Verdict: Tetris isn't exactly the most ambitious project for a company like EA Games. That's probably why the company's iPhone port is just, well, overdone. A good Tetris implementation - one that would have been wildly successful on its own - wasn't enough for EA, who've loaded this port up with so much crap that it sometimes doesn't even run. EA obviously wanted to use a bit of the iPhone's rendering capabilities, but the graphics are gaudy to the point of distraction. Starting or resuming a basic game takes quite a while because of the layers of menus and loading screens, and the secondary gameplay modes and Magic Mode tools will be ignored by most. On our 3G iPhone, the app would often freeze at startup, a problem that has been reported elsewhere among iPhone and iPod owners. An update is forthcoming that should address stability issues as well as introduce a feature that allows you to draw your upcoming shape directly.

These inspired features, though, are sullied by the showy, buggy execution. Anyone looking for a simple, clean port like Tris (from the jailbreak days. See you soon, Tris...) should probably pass on this $9.99 monster as you can expect a decent competitor to pop up at a lower price point, if not for free. Also, there are already web apps that offer a traditional (though gestureless) Tetris experience in your browser that don't have a 40 second startup time. One more sticky point: if you exit out of the game to check email or take a call and return, it will save your game state. But to start playing again you have to sit through 10 seconds of the intro movie. Freaking annoying and a waste of battery.

Create Free iPhone Ringtones Using iTunes in Windows

One of the things that Apple hasn’t made easy for iPhone owners is providing a way to create custom ringtones in Windows. If you’re a Mac owner you can use GarageBand, but Apple doesn’t provide that application on Windows. Instead what they expect you to do is purchase a song for $0.99, and then convert it to a ringtone for another $0.99.

As it turns out in a few steps you can actually convert a DRM-free song into a ringtone using only iTunes in Windows. The trick also works for Mac users, but using GarageBand is a lot simpler so we’re focusing primarily on the Windows side.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Start iTunes and find the [DRM-free] song you want to convert to a ringtone. Right-click on it and select the Get Info option.
  2. On the Options tab locate the Start Time and End Time options. This is where you want to specify the portion of the song you wanted converted into a ringtone. Check both of the boxes, and make sure your ringtone is under 30-seconds. Press OK when finished.
  3. Right-click on the song you just modified, and choose the Convert to AAC option. If you don’t see this in the context menu navigate to Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Importing, and make sure the AAC Encoder is selected in the Import Using menu.

For us, the launch of the iPhone 3G was less about the hardware tweak than it was about the App Store. Finally, Apple had opened up the iPhone platform to allow developers to create proper, native apps for the iPhone and iPod touch, and we couldn't wait to get installing.

The great thing about third-party apps is that you can do more than install them on an iPhone 3G; all first-generation iPhones can install them too, courtesy of the free 2.0 firmware upgrade. Even if you have an iPod touch you can get the 2.0 firmware upgrade, though it'll cost you £5.99. Some apps won't work on the touch, but that's usually only because they mandate a feature – speakers, mic, camera, GPS, say – that the iPod touch lacks.

Buying and installing apps is easy. You can browse or search the store through iTunes 7.7 or later on your Mac or PC, or use the App Store tool that you'll find on your iPhone itself. Apps bought in this latter way are backed up to your Mac at the next sync, and bug fixes and other upgrades are pushed through the iTunes Store ready for almost seamless updating. One weird thing with iPhone apps is that there's rarely a manual included. Some don't need it – they're so simple and intuitive – and some do it much better with pop-ups and other inline tips, but for a few the lack of a help system is annoying.
