UltraSn0w: Software method to Unlock iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0 Released

The iPhone Dev Team has released their much awaited software method called Ultrasn0w to unlock iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0.

It's also makes it the world's first software solution to unlock iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0.

The iPhone Dev Team had released their PwnageTool 3.0 for Mac on June 19 to jailbreak iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0 and then followed it up by releasing Redsn0w for both Mac and Windows users on June 20 to jailbreak iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0.

PwnageTool and Redsn0w can also be used to unlock iPhone 2G.

They have just released their much awaited software method called Ultrasn0w to unlock iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0 which can be installed via Cydia or Icy.

Dev Team has published the following instructions:

1. Ensure you have upgraded to iPhone OS 3.0.
2. Jailbreak your iPhone 3G using redsn0w or PwnageTool (this will also install Cydia/Icy).
3. Run Cydia or Icy.
4. Please add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia or Icy. That last “o” is actually the number zero “0”! If you use the letter “o” you’ll get an error.
5. Search for ‘ultrasn0w’ in cydia or icy and install ultrasn0w.
6. Reboot your iPhone 3G.
7. T-Mobile USA users should disable 3G before using ultrasn0w.

Please note that UltraSn0w currently does not unlock Apple's new iPhone 3GS.

But please proceed with caution and don't forget to tell us if you were able to successfully unlock your iPhone 3G.

Apple Reverses on Third-Party iPhone Apps

Apple is making an abrupt about-face on its policy regarding iPhone applications, announcing yesterday that it will release a software developer's kit for the device early next year.

The SDK, which will also support the iPod Touch, will allow third-party software developers to develop and deploy their own applications for the devices.

"Let me just say it: We want native third-party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers' hands in February," Jobs said in a statement on Apple's Web site. "We are excited about creating a vibrant third-party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users."

An Apple spokesperson said that the company was sharing no further details of the plans for the SDK at this time. But even the limited news was welcomed by application developers, whose access to the iPhone platform thus far has been limited to developing browser-based applications.

Apple Promises Third-Party SDK for iPhone, iPod Touch

After silence on the subject, Apple promises a path for third-party applications on the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Apple on Oct. 17 announced that it will provide a software development kit for third parties to create applications for the company's popular iPhone and iPod Touch.

"We want native third-party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers' hands in February. We are excited about creating a vibrant third-party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users," read a posting signed by Apple CEO Steve Jobs on company's Web site.

Previously, Apple has limited non-Apple iPhone development to "Web 2.0" implementations for use only online, and in the iPhone's Safari Web browser.

That brought criticism that has caused some pushback from developers. Safari-encased Web applications cannot be used without a live Internet connection, and do not share prime application icon space in the iPhone's main window.

EyeTV 2.5 update adds iPhone, iPod touch support

Elgato has announced the release of EyeTV 2.5, a free update to the company’s EyeTV 2 Digital Video Recorder (DVR) software for Mac OS X. It’s available for download from Elgato’s Web site. EyeTV costs $79.95 (upgrades from previous versions are available).

EyeTV helps you record TV on your Mac (using compatible hardware, including Elgato’s own EyeTV-branded peripherals). You can schedule recordings up to two weeks in advance, create playlists and favorite channel lists, manage your recordings schedule, edit out commercials or other unwanted content, create clips and export to different file formats including the iPod.

New to the 2.5 release is one-click export to formats optimized for viewing on the iPhone and iPod touch. EyeTV now lets you access the library of EyeTV recordings over a local Wi-Fi connection via Web server running within the software.

Apple not losing its Touch

There's so much new and useful in Apple's revisions to the iPod line that my first draft of this column went a terrifying 60 percent over my maximum word count.

So I'll try this again and get straight to it:

Apple has abandoned the Nano's comfy and ergonomic "stick of gum" shape for a squatter design that's more Oliver Hardy than Stan Laurel. But it's still wafer-thin, and though it's a little more awkward to hold, it's an appealing design. It's sort of like what you'd get if Sanrio reinterpreted the iPod: big eyes, no mouth or chin.

The shape of the new Nano ($149/$199) was mandated by its larger screen and its ability to play video. The screen is still relatively tiny, but it's just large enough for comfortable viewing. This is thanks to its bafflingly sharp display, which boasts more than 200 pixels per inch.

The suffix-free hard-drive-based iPod line has been re-dubbed the iPod Classic ($249/$349). The top-of-the-line model boasts 160 gigabytes, which an independent panel of U.N. observers has deemed a "freaking huge" amount of storage.

Tested: iPod Touch Screen Inferior to the iPhone's Screen

The iPhone and iPod Touch are presumed to have the same screen quality. But they don't, according to some testing and reader feedback we did today. The iPod Touch's screen turns black areas somewhat greyish, washed out shadow detail, with absolute blacks appearing shimmery.
