Apple's hardware team can't seem to keep their close platform closed

Apple has a big headache. That headache is iPhone unlockers and jailbreakers. With iPhone jailbreaking, the powerful handsets are no longer constrained to only run the apps that Apple allows. And with unlocking, users can jump onto other networks, leaving Apple's partner AT&T and its patchy 3G network behind.

Apple has long and unsuccessfully waged war with the unlockers. It has tried to brick their iPhones. It has tried to release new firmware versions to try to lock them out. But ultimately, time and time again, Apple's best hardware and software engineers are finding themselves outwitted and befuddled by the persistent hackers.

Leading the crew is George Hotz, a 20-year-old New Jersey native who goes by the aliases geohot, million75, or mil online. When he was just a teen, he became the first to develop a procedure to jailbreak the iPhone allowing its use on other networks. The move netted him a hot car, extra iPhones, money, and fame. Now slightly older and a month out of his teenage years, Hotz continues to be among the most prolific iPhone unlockers, consistently outsmarting Apple.

Now Hotz has released his latest masterpiece, blacksn0w, a free unlocking utility that works with the latest iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS hardware (the latest 05.11.07 baseband, which locked out previous hacks). The unlock works with a new version of Hotz's popular purplera1n jailbreak hack, dubbed blackra1n. Together the hacks can both free the phone from the AT&T network and Apple's app restrictions.

AT&T, Apple Agree to Limited U.S. Sales of Unlocked iPhones

Unlocking is okay, says AT&T, but only if you're an existing AT&T customer

Apple and AT&T have fought long and hard against iPhone unlockers in the U.S.  While some foreign countries have mandated Apple sell unlocked iPhones, in the U.S. such phones are still not available. 

According to a Boy Genius Report scoop, that could soon change.  The site claims to have obtained slides from an internal AT&T training presentation that indicate that Apple and AT&T will offer unlocked, contract-free iPhone 3Gs to existing AT&T customers starting March 26.  The 8 GB model would be priced at $599, while the 16 GB would be priced at $699.  

The phones would require no service agreement or activation and could work on other networks.  Again, the "No-Commit" pricing option would be limited to only existing AT&T customers, and only one phone would be available per customer.  Thus, it seems that AT&T is trying to silence complaints about strong-arm tactics when it comes to unlocking, while keeping the sales of unlocked iPhones very limited.

Firmware 2.0.1 Makes iPhone 3G Locked for Good?

Will your iPhone 3G be un-unlockable once you upgrade to the new firmware 2.0.1. Not exactly. And not yet, at least.

If you’ve updated already, you may have noticed that you lost access to any jailbroken apps you may have had. But don’t sweat it. The DevTeam is on it. However, the iPhone 3G’s baseband has also been updated making it a possibility that once the new Pwnage Tool comes out, you may be out of luck.

So, that puts many in a bit of a predicament. Update now and get greater functionality or wait it out and hope the new Pwnage Tool will fix the same problems and let your iPhone stay unlocked. It’s quite a pickle, if you ask me!

iPhone update thwarts hacks

Apple has released an update for the iPhone which effectively bricks some of the devices that consumers have unlocked over the past months.

Apple had previously warned that the unapproved update, which is intended to allow the phone to operate on networks other than AT&T's, could interfere with the its operations.

Users on several websites, including Gizmodo and the Unofficial Apple Weblog, are reporting that the update causes unrepairable errors. The iPhone in some cases offers an error message about an invalid SIM card and users are unable to leave the error screen or revert the software. Inserting the original sim card won't solve the problem.

The update also caused headaches for users who had previiously performed a so-called 'jailbreak' procedure to allow the iPhone to run custom applications. While the phones updated, most users reported that the installation locks were put back in place.

The question is not whether it’s legal to unlock the iPhone …

… the real question is whether Apple is allowed to brick an unlocked iPhone.

My posts on the possibility that Apple will brick unlocked iPhones have generated a lot of feedback. Many of you are wondering whether it’s legal to unlock an iPhone. The fact is that, within the US, it is legal to unlock a phone, and it’s enshrined in law:

Rulemaking on Exemptions from Prohibition on Circumvention of Technological Measures that Control Access to Copyrighted Works

The Librarian of Congress, on the recommendation of the Register of Copyrights, has announced the classes of works subject to the exemption from the prohibition against circumvention of technological measures that control access to copyrighted works. Persons making noninfringing uses of the following six classes of works will not be subject to the prohibition against circumventing access controls (17 U.S.C. § 1201(a)(1)) during the next three years.

…

5. Computer programs in the form of firmware that enable wireless telephone handsets to connect to a wireless telephone communication network, when circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of lawfully connecting to a wireless telephone communication network.

The question is not whether it’s legal to unlock the iPhone, the real question is whether Apple is allowed to brick an unlocked iPhone. That’s the interesting question, and since I’m not a lawyer I don’t pretend to have the answer, but here are some thoughts:

• Apple’s given prior notice that a future update “will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable”
• Users will consent to the installation being carried out
• Most updates are preceded by a license agreement which says that if things go wrong, well, tough
• The warranty doesn’t cover making any unauthorized changes to the device
• Apple is under no obligation to make sure that you tweaking remains compatible with updates

On a related note, the iPhone Dev Team is promising a patch to restore unlocked iPhones back to factory fresh condition.

So, where does this leave users of unlocked iPhones and Apple? My guess is that if iPhones start getting bricked, there’s going to be trouble.

20 Step Plan Emerges to Re-Lock Your iPhone

You have to give it to the iPhone hacking community, they’re an ingenious bunch.

After the thinly veiled threats of yesterday from Apple, the iPhone hacking community is trying to figure out how to safeguard their unlocked phones from the pending firmware update. One forum user over on MacNN has come up with a 20 step plan he feels will work, but he makes no guarantees. About the only thing missing is the use of a rubber band, but I may have missed it

Essentially you have to get the locked files back on your phone, and it involves a lot of file renaming and syncing. The developer of the hacks say it does not appear to break any third-party apps you may have installed, but that could still come in the form of Apple’s update.

So, if you’ve unlocked your phone, and you’re desperate to protect it from a problem that may or may not happen, you should probably at least take a look at the instructions and see if you want to give it a try.

Nine steps to (hopefully) re-lock your iPhone

With an iPhone firmware update coming this week that could potentially be permanently device-crippling to unlocked iPhones, relocking tutorials are popping up.

One of the most definitive, if not yet battle-tested, comes from TUAW (The Ultimate Apple Weblog’s) Erica Sadun.

Not without reader feedback (some of it critical) Erica recommends that if you feel the need to relock your iPhone that you perform the following steps:

1. (Take out your SIM from your iPhone.)–Erica writes she is still checking on this step.
2. Download the 1.0.2 firmware to your computer and unzip it. It uses a .ipsw extension but your unzip program should still work. Change the extension if you have to.
3. Extract the ramdisk as such: dd if=009-7698-4.dmg of=ramdisk.dmg bs=512 skip=4 conv=sync
4. Mount the extracted ramdisk.
5. From the ramdisk, copy /usr/local/bin/bbupdater,/usr/local/standalone/firmware/ICE03.14.08_G.eep, and /usr/local/standalone/firmware/ICE03.14.08_G.fls to your iPhone.
6. Place these into a folder on the OS partition (such as /bbupdate) and not into a folder on /var/root. The /var/root partition is set noexec and you cannot run programs from there.
7. Disable com.apple.CommCenter.plist–either using UIctl or launchctl: launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
8. On the iPhone, navigate to the folder where you stored bbupdater and the eep and fls files. Run bbupdater as such: ./bbupdater -f *.fls -e *.eep Reload comm center: launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
9. Reactivate with your favorite AT&T SIM. Erica indicates she personally likes using iASign.

And cross your fingers. This might work.

Then if it does, maybe you’ve learned your lesson- that you shouldn’t have unlocked your iPhone in the first place.

Apple warns about iPhone unlocking programs

Apple Inc. said Monday it has found that many unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet "cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software."

Cupertino-based Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) said using those programs "will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed."

Apple said it plans to release the next iPhone software update later this week, and warned that users who make unauthorized modifications to the software on their iPhone "violate their iPhone software license agreement and void their warranty."

If true, Jobs quote of “A 3G iPhone later next year” should kill demand for iPhone 1.0

Already having conceded to upset “early adopters” of the iPhone who were taken by surprise when Apple dropped the price of the 8GB iPhone (and dropped the 4GB iPhone altogether), Apple may have yet a new crisis on its hands: CEO Steve Jobs’ apparent pre-announcement that a 3G version of the iPhone will be available next year.

If the report is true, this could be worse news for Apple given that the price drop had to have come so soon to stimulate demand. There’s nothing that kills demand for the current generation of a product like an announcement that the next generation won’t be stillborn with obsolete networking technology the way the currently available generation was. Even if the report of Jobs saying this isn’t true, my guess is that a 3G iPhone in 2008 is pretty much a sure bet.

Jobs has been quoted as saying that “The trade off with 3G [in battery life] is too bad right now.” Either something is about to change when it comes to battery life that Jobs knows about but we don’t, or, Apple is realizing that price isn’t the only reason that prospective iPhone buyers are holding off for iPhone 2.0 (a suggestion I’ve been making since the iPhone came out). Sure, the next version of anything will always be better than the current one. But iPhone 2.0 will very likely get the things right that iPhone 1.0 got so wrong.

OS X Dashboard Widgets running on iPhone (with screen shot)

I've kinda sorta almost have Macintosh Dashboard widgets running on the iPhone. Some run okay, others not so much. The Weather, ESPN and Calendar widgets are some of the best; the Flight Tracker, Dictionary and Phone Book are among the worst. If you'd like to give this a try, download a copy of Widgets.app with the following understanding:

1. Widgets uses the XLaunch icon and splash screen and the Unknown icon is the wrong size. Sorry about that.
2. You must install System/Library/WidgetResources from your Mac onto the iPhone. Same folder, same name, same contents. Most Widgets will not run properly without these support files.
3. Install your widgets into /var/root/Library/Widgets on the iPhone. Widgets.app runs plain old ordinary OS X widgets. You must copy over the entire file structure, so scp -r YourWidget.wdgt root@youriphoneip:/var/root/Library/Widgets is going to be your best bet. And yes, you need to create the Widgets folder if it does not yet exist.

Why I Love NES on the iPhone

Boy, people have sure been ribbing me about being negative lately on my iPhone Matters posts. Not sure if they missed how psyched I was to review the Jawbone or how excited I was at the prospects of using an iPhone as a barcode scanner.

But to somehow prove to people that my glass is not always half empty I want to share how much I love the NES Emulator on the iPhone.

Truth be told, the sound is crappy, the ROMs are buggy at best, and the controller is just plain useless without a tactile component to it but boy is it fun.

For me, playing Nintendo games on my iPhone brings me back to the days when I was in 7th grade reading Nintendo Power Magazine and scheming on how to score Bayou Billy for Christmas.

I remember keying in “Justin Bailey” to activate the power ups and purple leotard on Samus in Metroid. Or jumping just right on the same turtle shell for unlimited lives in Super Mario Brothers (World 3-1 to be exact). And who could forget the infamous Up-Up-Down-Down-Left-Right-Left-Right-B-A-Start for the 99 guys in Contra?

Official Open-Source IPhone Unlock GUI Arrives

Anyone frustrated by the command-line iPhone unlocking process now has reason to celebrate.

The iPhone Dev Team has released anySIM, a simple-to-use GUI package for unlocking your iPhone. Just install it as a PXL package and you can free up the device to be used by any GSM carrier with one click. The first version was released on Friday night, and an update to fix a few bugs was pushed out over the weekend (We know we're a bit late reporting this one, but we've been busy snorkeling for diamonds up in wine country and we'd be remiss if we didn't bring you the news).

You can find several links to download the open-source app on the iPhone Dev Wiki. Erica Sadun, the TUAW writer and coder who participated in the creation of the GUI, noted that the package should also show up in the Installer.app menu soon -- I just refreshed and I didn't see it, but hold out hope.

Erica worked with a small team to push this out in under a week. It's a small app, but its creation was no small task -- kudos to all who contributed.

GUI version of free iPhone unlock in the works

For anyone who was waiting for a free unlock before they purchased an iPhone, yesterday's announcement of iUnlock was great news. Now that the unlock has been released, iPhone hackers are engaging in one of their favorite pursuits: making existing hacks even easier to use. The unlocking process with iUnlock isn't particularly complex, but TUAW's Erica Sadun is working on an even simpler, GUI-based iPhone unlocking tool, which should be released in the next few days.

As it turns out, there's already a GUI unlock application out there, but it's got quite a bit of drama surrounding it. The original iUnlock tool was written by the iPhone Dev Team, with the upcoming graphical additions courtesy of Erica. Unfortunately, that hasn't stopped a UK man from ripping off the code for the GUI unlock and releasing it as his own, as well as trying to take credit for the original free unlock. The whole story is a bit complex, but suffice to say that the current GUI unlock tool is based on some code ripped from other developers, and is being distributed without their consent, making it more than a bit sketchy.

The version of the application that has been released is a pretty crude beta, whereas the product from Erica and the iPhone Dev Team promises to be far more polished. The software will offer a one-click unlock of the iPhone, using the method detailed in the iUnlock instructions. Even if you hate the command line and are desperate for an easier way to unlock your iPhone, I'd highly recommend waiting for the release of the official GUI unlock. It should be available fairly soon, and will even be available through Installer.app to make things even easier. People have put a lot of time and effort into developing cool hacks for the iPhone, so I think it's worth waiting a few days in order to show them some appreciation and support.
