Is your iPhone overheating?

UPDATE: Anon in the comments points out that, per Apple knowledge base, it’s totally real. Boy, I need to move to a warmer country!

Jeff sent this in and none of us have ever seen it before (then again, it’s still cold in Montreal so I’d have to throw my iPhone in an oven to even try and test it):

Don’t sit next to a pool in Scottsdale Arizona when it’s 104 degrees or your iphone will melt away! So how to fix it fast? I put the iPhone between 2 cold beers and it worked!

Anyone else ever see this before?

iPhone App makes time lapse photography easy

iPhone TimeLapse Test from digitalurban on Vimeo.

Here's a fun application. TimeLapse [App Store link] uses your iPhone's camera to take photos at regular intervals. You can have one photo snapped as infrequently as every 24 hours, or as often as every 10 seconds, which is about as fast as it can snap and store a photo. After you've collected all of your photos (I told it to stop after 300), you can easily dump them into iMovie or QuickTime Pro and make a simple time lapse movie. Neat!

Top 10 Fun, Cheap and Free iPhone Apps

Here are ten apps that won't annoy you (OK, Alarm Free might) and are either clever diversions or simply fun toys. All links take you to the App Store. Check out the gallery for a preview of everything I've mentioned. All of these were free when I first downloaded them, as I'm a terrible cheapskate, but several now cost between $.99 and $1.99, which isn't bad.

Ancient Wisdom
Basically just a database of quotes from three philosophers: Lao Tzu, Miyamoto Musashi and Sun Tzu. To make it a little more fun the developers make the quotes come from cute cartoon monkeys. Not exactly genius, but fun and the quotes are, of course, pure gold. Better than a Magic 8-Ball, I think.

Newtonica Player
This simple app has you spin a mesh ball to generate a "beat" that times the pace of the electronica music. There is a surprising amount of depth to the song, simple as it is. I was able to modify the tune a bit depending on my spinning, direction and how long I kept spinning. Terribly simple but fun because of those little tonal surprises.

1Passwd 2.5b adds iPhone export

The browser password manager 1Passwd has just been updated to version 2.5b and adds an interesting new feature: iPhone export. You're now able to export your secure passwords and notes to the iPhone from your Mac. The clever thing is that they accomplish this without hacking the iPhone in any way.

Basically what it does is create a special Safari secured bookmarket from your 1Passwrd data "using 448 bit Blowfish encryption." This special bookmarklet is then synced to the iPhone in the normal way through iTunes. When you access the bookmarklet in mobile Safari on the iPhone it prompts you for your password and then gives you access to your passwords, secure notes, etc. Since it's just a bookmarklet in mobile Safari this should not be affected by any future firmware changes, etc.

The latest 1passwd beta can be downloaded from the Agile Web Solutions Forum.

Pondering pay-as-you-go for iPhone data? Might want to think different

Sure, you can put your iPhone on a pay-as-you-go SIM and take your data a few cents at a time... but be warned, you may end up with a substantial chunk missing out of your wallet without noticing that you're leaking cash. TUAW tests the plan and shows us the bill.

I recently had the chance to sit down with my iPhone and a prepaid SIM with a $50 account balance. I really got a chance to see how the iPhone would function with a pay-as-you-go plan and its data plan.

What I learned was this: although using iPhone with pay-as-you-go means you can make occasional phone calls when you need to, you'll want to avoid EDGE data and stick to WiFi whenever possible. Here's the complete run-down.

Activating the iPhone

Getting the iPhone to activate with the new SIM took longer than I expected because I was using an updated version of iASign and I forgot one basic rule: You need to deactivate your phone first before trying to reactivate it with another card. This cost me almost a half hour of frustration until I finally remembered.

A paperclip let me remove the old SIM and swap in a new one from a cheap disposable Motorola phone. Then I used iASign to deactivate the iPhone(./iASign.mac --deactivate), to check the state of the iPhone (./iASign.mac --state, which should return deactivated), and then to activate (./iASign.mac --automatic iPhoneActivation_private.pem). You may wish to use its backup feature before doing the deactivate/reactivate.

OS X Dashboard Widgets running on iPhone (with screen shot)

I've kinda sorta almost have Macintosh Dashboard widgets running on the iPhone. Some run okay, others not so much. The Weather, ESPN and Calendar widgets are some of the best; the Flight Tracker, Dictionary and Phone Book are among the worst. If you'd like to give this a try, download a copy of Widgets.app with the following understanding:

  1. Widgets uses the XLaunch icon and splash screen and the Unknown icon is the wrong size. Sorry about that.
  2. You must install System/Library/WidgetResources from your Mac onto the iPhone. Same folder, same name, same contents. Most Widgets will not run properly without these support files.
  3. Install your widgets into /var/root/Library/Widgets on the iPhone. Widgets.app runs plain old ordinary OS X widgets. You must copy over the entire file structure, so scp -r YourWidget.wdgt root@youriphoneip:/var/root/Library/Widgets is going to be your best bet. And yes, you need to create the Widgets folder if it does not yet exist.

iPhone Dev Team announces free GUI iPhone Unlock Tool

The iPhone Dev Team has released a simple-to-use GUI tool that allows you to unlock your iPhone for use with any SIM. The tool, which is based on their previous command-line work, provides one-touch speedy unlocking. This is a big improvement on the first generation release. It no longer requires you to use special files or to dump nor data.

You can download your copy from the DevTeam website, as a PXL package or, soon, from Installer.app. "Wheat" is the guy responsible for those amazing graphics.

Find out more at the #iphone channel at irc.osx86.hu. Remember, this is early software and unstable. If risk isn't your thing, you'll probably want to wait a few days or weeks for things to stabilize.

Update: After reports of failed unlocks, Sam has updated the version to fix a timing issue. Current version is now 1.0.1, which solves the timing issue.

Update 2: I know of a youtube hack and have heard third-hand of a Visual Voicemail hack. Will post when I have details.
