iPhone 3GS users, I have got some terrific news for you. The twittersphere is buzzing with cpich3g’s latest tweet claiming a successful jailbreak of iPhone 3GS 3.1 firmware:

Free iPhone Jailbreak banned - latest iPhone developer agreement

The "iPhone Developer Program License Agreement" governs what iPhone developers can and cannot do. Now, jailbreaking, assisting in jailbreaking, and developing and distributing jailbreak apps are among the things that the latest revision of that agreement does not condone.

Of course, Apple forbids the creation of apps that violate privacy, facilitate crimes, or violate intellectual property laws. But registered developers can no longer jailbreak their own phones or assist others in jailbreaking their phones, including (but not limited to) working on projects such as QuickPwn or PwnageTool. Developers are also forbidden from using the iPhone OS, SDK, or other developer tools to develop applications for distribution in any way other than the App Store or Ad Hoc distribution—which of course rules out distribution via Cydia, free or otherwise.

The relevant clauses in the agreement, a copy of which was made available to Ars, are as follows:

(e)You will not, through use of the Apple Software, services or otherwise, create any Application or other program that would disable, hack or otherwise interfere with the Security Solution, or any security, digital signing, digital rights management, verification or authentication mechanisms implemented in or by the iPhone operating system software, iPod touch operating system software, this Apple Software, any services or other Apple software or technology, or enable others to do so; and

(f) Applications developed using the Apple Software may only be distributed if selected by Apple (in its sole discretion) for distribution via the App Store or for limited distribution on Registered Devices (ad hoc distribution) as contemplated in this Agreement.

Though jailbreaking allows access to apps that Apple doesn't approve of and enables unlocking the phone from approved carriers, it also allows users and developers access to the UNIX underpinnings of iPhone OS, which both groups could have perfectly legitimate reasons for wanting.

Dev Team Strikes Back: QuickPwn 1.1 and Pwnage 2.1 Released

Take that Apple! The Dev Team has gone and done it again and has struck back at Apple with a vengeance. If you were wondering when you would be able to jailbreak the 2.1 firmware wonder no more… Only one day after Apple released firmware 2.1 the Dev Team responded with not only Pwnage 2.1, but QuickPwn 1.1 as well!

While you may have heard about Apple fighting back the other day against jailbreakers with iTunes 8, this has been taken into consideration by the Dev Team and they’ve built in the patches to correct the iTunes error.

By the way we figured out a way to combat iTunes 8 without patches…and we’re waiting to see what Apple tries next. But we think they might want to rethink their priorities. They probably won’t though, and so we get back to the “cat and mouse” game between Apple and the Dev Team and other third-party communities.

This software is for Mac users only so Windows users will have to wait a little longer to jailbreak the 2.1 firmware. It is important to note, there is still no available software unlock method for the iPhone 3G. I’m beginning to think we may not see one anytime soon. Download PWNAGE 2.0 - Jailbreak your iPod Touch and iPhone

Today the Dev-Team released PWNAGE 2.0 for the iPhone or iPod Touch. This will allow you to jailbreak your iPod Touch 2.0, iPhone, iPhone 3G, and modify the firmware.

If you get Error 1600 on iTunes or see the below message:
prepare x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw), try: mkdir ~/Library/iTunes/”Device Support”

Remove any files if that directory exits and re-run the Pwnage software.
