Apple released the iPhone 3G on July 11th, 2008, which gives you early adopters just a few weeks before your one-year warranty runs out.

What does this mean? It means you should give your iPhone a good hard look to determine if it’s in your best interest to take your iPhone to your local Apple Store to try to obtain a replacement.

There are at least 18 well-known defects with the iPhone, all of which oblige Apple to replace the handset for free. All are detailed are over the next few pages, including ways to test your iPhone to make sure everything is functioning properly.

Issues that Apple considers grounds for replacement include hairline cracks, discolored screens, dead pixels, flakey WiFi, dodgy GPS and crackly speakers.

If your precious iPhone is suffering from any of these problems, read on to make sure you’re properly prepared before you head down to your local Apple store and get a replacement. Hurry, before it’s too late.

The purposes of this article are twofold: to help the average iPhone owner decide whether or not to seek a replacement iPhone pursuant to Apple’s 1-year warranty; and, to prepare the average iPhone user for the process of replacing his or her iPhone.

Should You Replace Your Old iPhone?

There are three main questions you should answer before bringing your iPhone to a Genius. First, does your iPhone have a problem caused by a legitimate defect? Second, is your iPhone still covered by its warranty? (July 10 is the last day if you purchased your iPhone on July 11th, 2008). Third, do you really want to replace your iPhone? Ultimately the decision is yours to make and should be made honestly – it is not in your best interest to try to obtain a new iPhone based on false pretenses.

The bottom line: if you genuinely believe your iPhone is defective, it is your right to demand that Apple repair or replace it pursuant to its 1-year warranty. Let’s discuss.

   You can set restrictions for iPod content for the use of some applications on iPhone. For example, parents can restrict explicit music from being seen on playlists, or turn off YouTube access entirely.

AT&T confirms contract-free iPhone 3G

After a nine-month wait, AT&T says that it will definitely offer iPhones without a contract, according to a spokesperson for the company. They're still locked to AT&T, but at least you won't have to commit to two years of AT&T punishment love-ins.

Earlier today, we told you about unconfirmed evidence that AT&T planned to offer iPhones without a contract. AT&T spokesperson Michael Coe has now confirmed in a statement to the AP that "no-commit" iPhones will go on sale next Thursday, March 26.

As rumored, the 8GB iPhone 3G will sell for $599 and the 16GB iPhone 3G will sell for $699. So now you know: AT&T is subsidizing $400 of the cost of the iPhone if you're willing to commit to two years of service.

AT&T said it would probably offer a contract-free option for the iPhone after the initial July launch frenzy settled down. That was nine months ago, for those of you keeping score. Further, the "no-commit" option is limited to one per customer per active line, and they are still locked to AT&T. Still, for those who don't want to be saddled with two years of service, you now have another option.

Contract free iPhone 3G sales begin in France

It was a few weeks back when we first learned that the iPhone 3G would be available contract free in France, and now retailer FNAC has become the first to begin sales. Of course, as you would expect, the contact free handsets are not in any way inexpensive. The 8GB model is priced at €799 (around $1,123 US) and the 16GB model is priced at €899 (around $1,263 US). It was also noted that France Telecom has appealed the previous decision that made the injunction. In the meantime, if you are in France and have plenty of extra cash on hand, then I suppose you could pick up a contract free iPhone.

Future Shop Sells Contract Free iPhone 3G

While most cell phone service providers are willing to sell you just about any mobile phone without forcing you to sign a contract, this was not the case when the Apple iPhone 3G arrived in Canada.

In order to get your hands on the latest Cupertino hotness, you had to latch yourself down to a new three-year service agreement with either Rogers Wireless or Fido.

The three-year contract may have been a major hurdle for some people, but it seems that it just may be possible to pick up the iPhone 3G without having to sign a new agreement. How? We’ll have to take this with a great deal of hesitation, but on the Future Shop website last night, they were listing the iPhone 3G from Rogers with some rather interesting price points.

How to Download and Create Free iPhone 3G Ringtones

How to make your own iPhone ringtones? Unlike other mobile phone, Apple’s iPhone 3G does not allow you to set your mp3 as ringtone, by forcing user to purchase ringtones from iTunes is outright daylight robbery. GeckoandFly has discovered and compiled a list of do it yourself iPhone ringtones.

Method 01

Step 1 : Edit the mp3 by trimming out the thirty seconds of the song using music editing software such as Audacity for Windows and Garage band for Mac.

Step 2 : Open the song in iTunes, in iTunes, right click on the song and export to .aac format or iPod format.

Step 3 : Open the .aac song and rename it, change the extension from .m4a to .m4r (iTunes’ ringtone format).

Step 4 : Delete the original mp3 you created in your iTunes library, once you’re done, re-add the newly changed .m4r song into iTunes and drag it into your iPhone ringtone section. Remember, delete and re-add your song!

Report: AT&T Source Explains Exact Technical Details of iPhone 3G Probems

Looking down the rabbit hole at the iPhone 3G's issues

The iPhone 3G is one of Apple's flagship products. Many would argue it stands far above its most able competitors in terms of capabilities. Yet, the iPhone has been having some problems.

The iPhone's problems began when users started to become frustrated with dropped calls and poor call quality. They took their frustrations and poured them out on Apple's message boards. Sources in Apple said that CEO Steve Jobs was unconcerned with the problems as he said they likely only affected 2 percent of iPhone customers, or about 60,000 people.

Then came the report from Sweden's foremost tech weekly Ny Teknik, saying that it had test the iPhone's 3G and it fell well below the standards set for 3G, and should not be certified and as a 3G product. Many, including sources inside Apple, seemed to place the blame on the Infineon chipset in the phone.

iPhone 3G reception -- What's the problem?

Complaints of dropped calls, weak signals and slow data speeds reach critical mass

Apple's iPhone 3G was just a couple of days old when reports began trickling onto the company's support forum from dissatisfied customers.

"I am suppose to be in a strong 3G coverage area at home, [but] I only have 1 bar," said user Doug Clements in a message posted July 13. "Traveling around town (Sacramento area) my 3G coverage changes dramatically. From 1 bar to full bars? Not sure if its working properly or not??"

Within a month, what had started as a few news reports grew dramatically, with several prominent newspapers, including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today adding their voices to the chorus.

What's going on? We may not have all the answers, but we do have questions. Here's our take on the griping about iPhone 3G reception.

What's the beef about? Users started complaining about crappy reception -- lousy signal strength, dropped calls and slow data speeds -- just days after the iPhone 3G's July 11 debut.

Those complaints have filled Apple's support forum with nearly 2,000 messages in a series of three long threads, the first two of which were shut down because they were too long for some browsers to load. (This is the current thread open for comment; the first two are here and here.)

iPhone 3G will have 3G fix with September software update

There have been many reports as of late that show a serious problem with the iPhone 3G’s reception. For starters, as many as 3% of users do not get 3G reception at all, or very poorly at best. The likely cause has been pinpointed to the Infineon chipset.

But now it looks as though we definitely will be seeing a fix to the issue come September. And as suspected, the fix will come in the form of a software update. New firmware should improve the 3G reception, regardless of the source of the problem.

Some iPhone 3G Users Find Painful Experience Thanks to Poor Connections

Problems continue for the hot new phone; Apple locks down angry users' threads

The iPhone 3G was supposed to be Apple's latest media darling, the successor to the device Time magazine called the "invention of the year". In some effects the iPhone 3G has achieved this mercurial success -- but perhaps in sales only. It quickly sold 1 million phones and oodles of applications and has cruised comfortably to sales of 3 million phones worldwide.

However, problems have prevented ever since launch. The launch was muddled by problems connecting to Apple's servers. Then there were reports that the new iPhone's plastic casing, part of the price cutting measures that had slashed the iPhone's price from $399 to $199, was defective and cracking.

Now more tough news has come for Apple with reports that the iPhone 3G is committing the cardinal sin of cell phones -- being unable to make a good connection consistently in covered areas. The Apple message boards are ablaze with angry users complaining of dropped calls or poor call quality even with relatively good signal strength.

One user, Mr. Yarbrough, a 34-year-old accountant, describes, "I was driving down Folsom Street in San Francisco, and I got a dropped call 10 times. I get dropped calls just standing in one place. I'm extremely annoyed, but I'm hopeful a software update will fix it."

It is unclear exactly how widespread the problem is as the message boards are a poor way to ascertain levels of failure. The main thread on the Apple boards had 746 comments, when it was locked by Apple, allegedly because it, "was too long and some browsers were timing out." Further adding to the difficulty of coming to any such metrics is the fact that Apple is denying that anything out of the ordinary is going on.

Apple's iPhone 3G: All Cracked Up

Apple's iPhone 3G is not all it's cracked up to be

Apple's 3G iPhone was met with much fanfare when it launched earlier this month. The new phone brought 3G download speeds, GPS hardware, and a new iTunes App Store among other things. The popularity of the iPhone brand along with the buzz created by Apple generated sales of over one million units worldwide within three days of launch.

All is not well in iPhone 3G land, however. The folks over at Engadget noticed that a number of people are noticing stress fractures/cracks in their iPhone 3G casings. The cracks seem to mostly affect owners of white 16GB iPhone 3G models, but owners of black iPhone 3Gs have reported problems as well (but to a lesser degree).

The majority of the cracks are showing up around the edges of the phone and near the headphone jack. Some people have reported seeing cracks as soon as a day after receiving the phone, while others saw cracks within the first one to two weeks of ownership.

IPhone 3G Users Heated Over Network Issues

People aren't done complaining about the iPhone 3G. This time, it's the 3-G network that's grinding people's gears.

Hundreds of peeved iPhone users in Apple's support forums say they're experiencing problems with the 3-G network. Some Gadget Lab readers have written in echoing similar concerns. And CNET editors say they're receiving e-mails about 3-G issues, too.

The problems vary. A few readers said they can only stay on 3-G for a few minutes before their iPhone switches over to the slower EDGE network -- even in areas with rich 3-G coverage. Some forum users said they're getting poor reception (e.g. two bars) everywhere they go.

It's unclear as to whether it's a network or hardware issue. But a Gadget Lab reader said AT&T assured him it was a problem with the phone.

"I work in Midtown Manhattan, probably the most 3-G-covered area, and indeed I get five full glorious bars of broadband goodness at my desk -- for two minutes," the reader wrote in an e-mail. "Then iPhone switches to EDGE, still full bars mind you, and back to 3-G for a hot second. All day. Apart from draining my battery, this make me type this very e-mail on EDGE when I just racked up 550 bucks for the phone (since I was not eligible for an upgrade). Called AT&T. They told me my phone was defective and that of course it was not the network. Bad 3-G software ? Bad chip?"

AT&T spokesperson Brad Mays said iPhone 3G is "performing great."

Apple gets iPhone 3G right for business

With the iPhone 3G's banner opening weekend and newsstands looking like a rack of brochures for the device, a review of the iPhone 3G at this point might be pro forma, except for one thing: Much of the iPhone 3G and the new iPhone 2.0 software remains an enigma to professionals and enterprises, users set apart by, among other things, their tendency to use punctuation in their e-mail. These users demand more from a handset than a cellular browser and YouTube.

With mature and well-established QWERTY devices from HTC, Motorola, Nokia, Palm, and Research in Motion known to be capable of handling the needs of serious users, the iPhone 3G needs to be weighed against alternatives using existing professional and enterprise-targeted handsets to set the bar. As you may recall, I judged the original 2007 iPhone to fall far short of professional standards. The iPhone was too expensive to be missing so much.

This time around, there are two new products under discussion. One is the iPhone 3G, Apple's pair of new 8GB and 16GB phone models (which cost US$199 and $299, respectively, for AT&T customers who agree to a two-year contract) that deliver ActiveSync, Assisted GPS (A-GPS), and 1Mbps 3G cellular data. The other product is the iPhone 2.0 software, Apple's new iPhone firmware and related apps. iTunes 7.7 or later will update existing iPhones and iPod Touches to the 2.0 for free. After that's done, you'll end up with a device that is, except for GPS and 3G, functionally identical to the iPhone 3G. The iPod Touch is also upgradable to iPhone 2.0 firmware for $9.95.

I've taken to referring to first-gen iPhone and iPhone 3G running iPhone 2.0 software as iPhone, which now identifies a consistently implemented platform in the same manner that Mac covers all Apple client computers. Wherever I refer to iPhone 3G, you'll know that I'm making specific reference to Apple's new handset.

Second time's the charm
Apple has turned iPhone into a mobile platform that I can recommend to professional and enterprise users. I make that recommendation with fair confidence, based on my testing of the iPhone 3G against Apple's claims. Those tests continue, and will for some time. It's my opinion that final judgment about the worthiness of a mobile device can't be rendered until you've trusted your digital identity to it.

Clearly, I haven't had time to carry it that far, but the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 2.0 software meet the expectations set by Apple, and Apple's design and engineering produced a mobile device and platform that hold their own against the likes of Nokia E-Series, RIM BlackBerry, and Windows Mobile 6. In areas where Apple chose to focus its innovation, the iPhone 3G exceeds the capabilities of other devices by a margin that makes it hard to imagine competitors closing the gap.

Apple's iPhone 3G: Great, But Needs Work

After testing Apple's (AAPL) original iPhone last year, I didn't regret having to ship it back. The phone was slow, so browsing the Web was a pain. And it wouldn't let me to take a call while continuing to browse the Web -- a feature that many other phones offered at that point. With the new iPhone 3G, though, I'm torn. There are lots of wonderful things about the gadget that I'll miss. At the same time, the latest version still needs work.

On the plus side, while the iPhone 3G is expensive, its price is comparable with that of similar devices from other manufacturers. Research In Motion's (RIMM) BlackBerry Curve, which offers Global Positioning System [GPS], a Qwerty keyboard, and a full browser, costs $150 with a two-year contract at AT&T (T) vs. $199 for Apple's least expensive iPhone 3G model. Unlimited BlackBerry and iPhone data plans at AT&T cost the same: $30 a month. At Sprint Nextel (S), the Samsung Instinct costs $130 with a two-year contract, and an unlimited data and voice plan will set you back by $100 a month -- the typical bill an iPhone 3G owner will run up.

The iPhone 3G design is amazing -- and different from the original iPhone in subtle but important ways. The 3G version is more rounded in the back, so it fits in the palm of your hand better and feels more substantial. The new model contains 10 wireless radios vs. just six in the original model, so the phone can access more carriers' networks worldwide and offer GPS capabilities. With the new device you can multitask, surfing the Web while taking a call at the same time.

Snazzy Software But the best part is the software. I loved being able to easily associate photos and map locations with people on my contacts list, to save photos received via e-mail directly into my photo albums, and to see who left me voice mails [a capability called visual voice mail that was a hit with the prior iPhone as well]. I could also get keyboards in 20 languages, including my native tongue, Russian.

iPhone 3G in Canada: One Week Later

I got to my local Rogers (corporate owned) store way early, and was immediately nervous upon seeing tons of cars. They were filled with senior citizens — strange iPhone demographic, I thought. When the doors to the mall opened at 7am, the seniors raced in. Near jog, no joke. I thought I’d end up behind a ton of angry, eager iPhone golden oldies, but a funny thing happened: they raced right on past Rogers. Turns out they jog/power walk/amble about there every morning. Who knew?

One week later, and how are things now? I just got my first bill (wow, that was faster than 3G!). $30/6GB data, $35 Mega My 5, $15 Visual Voice Mail Value Pack, $35 activation fee, plus crazy Canadian taxes. $124. (Plus the initial $299 for the 16GB handset…)

But what else is going on in my home and native land? Read on to find out!

Its been quite a ride (just check out all the coverage here). But the fun hasn’t stopped for Canadians. Sure, some independent stores were refusing to process anything but new accounts for launch week, Rogers the 16GB units disappeared almost instantly — at least after the Customer Central software came out of crash mode some time around noon, and just in time for iTunes’ servers to go down. But sales were brisk all around. Rogers claims they very nearly sold out, moving “tens of thousands” of the iPhone 3G. And while confided to greater metropolitan areas, 3G speeds are proving to be decent. That’s the good news.

State of the iPhone 2.0 Unlock: DevTeam Still Pending, HK Starts Shipping?

We’ve been all over the jailbreak/unlock situation for both the iPhone 3G and the original iPhone 2G updated to 2.0, and here’s the latest.
