Genome + iPhone = Helps Transform Individual Health Care

With employees spread across five continents, effective mobile communications are essential for Illumina, a San Diego, CA-based biotechnology company that designs breakthrough tools for genetic analysis. Using iPhone, sales reps can track customers, executives can manage employees, and everyone can stay in touch. And soon Illumina will make it possible for consumers to carry their personal genomes with them on iPhone.

iPhone was an obvious technology choice, says Jay Flatley, Illumina's President and CEO. "First and foremost, it's a great phone. But what our employees need goes well beyond that. They need a computer in their hands that can do calculations and data searches, and can manage sales using SalesForce Mobile. Because of the flexibility of the interface, iPhone was the ideal tool for us."

With iPhone apps like Workday HR management software and Cisco WebEx Meeting Center, Illumina executives can do everything from tracking payroll to participating in meetings wherever they are. "iPhone has improved the overall productivity of people at Illumina," says Scott Kahn, Illumina's Chief Information Officer. "It's rare that you deploy a tool and don't get any negative feedback. But with iPhone, the first response is usually 'Thank you.'"

Free iPhone Games Produces Varying Amounts of Fun

One of the iPhone’s most revolutionary features is its large library of instantly accessible free games.

The question is whether any are worth your time. To find out, I thought I’d put the App Store to the test by downloading the top 10 free titles from the “All Games“ category (based on number of recent downloads as of July 17, 2009), and playing each one for as long as it held my attention. The only caveat was a 15-minute time limit for each game. If a free game holds your attention for at least 15 minutes, that’s good.

1. “Wooden Labyrinth 3D Lite”

I had a love/hate relationship with my old tabletop Labyrinth game as a kid. I loved the concept, but I hated how much I sucked at manipulating those little knobs to guide the ball past the holes. The iPhone version, with its simple tilt controls, makes things more enjoyable. I’m surprised how accurate and realistic the physics are, and I love the way the 3-D perspective shifts as you tilt the unit, making the screen feel like a window into an alternate world. The randomly generated levels in this “lite” version are hit-or-miss, but the variable difficulty ensures lot of replay value.

Why Was Google's Voice iPhone App Rejected? Apple Explains...

Apple has officially answered FCC questions about why Google Voice was rejected to appear in App Store. For those who didn’t keep track of the news, Apple rejected the Google Voice application for iPhone and removed all related third-party application from App Store. The rejection has drawn great attention & criticism around the net and even Federal regulators wanted to know why Apple rejected Google’s innovative Voice app from its App Store.

This is not the very first time Apple rejected iPhone applications submitted for App Store. Developers, bloggers and journalists around the net have criticized Apple for rejecting applications especially for those innovative applications trying to add feature and even replace iPhone’s default application like Phone or Mail applications.

Okay, here is the Apple’s answer to FCC’s question on why the Google Voice application was rejected:

Contrary to published reports, Apple has not rejected the Google Voice application, and continues to study it. The application has not been approved because, as submitted for review, it appears to alter the iPhone’s distinctive user experience by replacing the iPhone’s core mobile telephone functionality and Apple user interface with its own user interface for telephone calls, text messaging and voicemail. Apple spent a lot of time and effort developing this distinct and innovative way to seamlessly deliver core functionality of the iPhone. For example, on an iPhone, the “Phone” icon that is always shown at the bottom of the Home Screen launches Apple’s mobile telephone application, providing access to Favorites, Recents, Contacts, a Keypad, and Visual Voicemail. The Google Voice application replaces Apple’s Visual Voicemail by routing calls through a separate Google Voice telephone number that stores any voicemail, preventing voicemail from being stored on the iPhone, i.e., disabling Apple’s Visual Voicemail. Similarly, SMS text messages are managed through the Google hub—replacing the iPhone’s text messaging feature. In addition, the iPhone user’s entire Contacts database is transferred to Google’s servers, and we have yet to obtain any assurances from Google that this data will only be used in appropriate ways. These factors present several new issues and questions to us that we are still pondering at this time.

The answer is not very convincing.

Exploding iPhone Investigation

Apple is investigating media reports of at least one iPhone exploding, a claim which does not stretch far from similarly reported iPod cases.

Media reports claiming that one or more iPhones have exploded in Europe have led Apple to investigate, according to Reuters.

One such report includes the case of an 18-year-old iPhone user in France who claims to have heard a hissing noise coming from his girlfriend’s iPhone before it shattered. The teenager reportedly suffered minimal injuries from the incident, which resulted in his eye being struck by a piece of iPhone glass, as reported by Google.

Helen Kearns, European Commission Spokesperson for Consumer Affairs, explained the following at a news briefing: "Apple has come back to us ... and what they've said to us is that they consider these are isolated incidents. They don't consider that there's a general problem."

"They're trying to get more information on the specific details of those incidents, and they will do tests as necessary to investigate the possible cause," Kearns added.

Although the current media reports share a small amount of explosion cases for the iPhone, numerous similar cases have been reported by users of the iPod. According to Google, in late July, Seattle-based television news station KIRO reported that an “alarming number” of iPods had “suddenly burst into flames and smoke, injuring people and damaging property."

How Many 'Very Satisfied' iPhone 3GS customers? 92%+

A new survey reports that the iPhone 3GS has been successful due to the fact that the iPhone continues to be innovative and its customers have stayed loyal to its manufacturing company, Apple.

According to the survey which was conducted by the BC/IQ ChangeWave polling company, over 99% of iPhone customers said that they were ‘satisfied’ with their mobiles and an additional 92% reported they were ‘very satisfied’ with their iPhone 3GS mobiles.

Among the most appreciated features on the iPhone was ease of use for third party applications and its touch screen interface.

The negative reported features of the iPhone include its short battery life, the exclusive contract with AT&T as a network provider, and the lack of support in users’ IT departments for the iPhone.

The survey also found that 41% of the people who purchased the iPhone 3GS previously owned the prior model.

Those who purchased the iPhone 3GS for the first time split down the line with 18% switching from a Motorola device, 11% from a Nokia mobile, 6% from a Palm mobile, and 8% from a Sanyo mobile.

Why are iPhone Apps Rejected by the App Store? Here is Why...

After rejections, one Apple executive is trying hard to win customers -- and developers -- back

Apple's app store practices have bordered on schizophrenia, with it frequently accepting applications only to later reject them and rejecting others only to later accept them. Worse yet, frequently rejections seem to follow no consistent pattern, with some apps being rejected for containing some sort of forbidden content, while others with that same content get accepted.

These inconsistencies have led to customers growing dissatisfied with the iPhone -- or in some cases even leaving it. They have also led to a growing discontent among developers, some of whom have also jumped ship. And it has even brought down a government investigation concerning Apple's role in rejecting the Google Voice app.

However, there is one man who hopes to fix the system. Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing Phil Schiller is trying to right the iPhone App Store and is personally taking a hand in trying to win back customers, developers, and placate government investigators.

iPhone Does Not Make Phone Carriers Any Real Money

Apple does well on iPhone sales, carriers don't

The iPhone is one of the most popular smartphones on the market today and the device that most new smartphones look to fight in the market. It seems that almost every new smartphone that hits the market is hailed as an iPhone killer but so far, only the Palm Pre has come close.

InformationWeek reports that the iPhone is a loss leader for every carrier who sells it worldwide. According to new figures from Danish research firm Strand Consult, it was unable to find any carrier who increased profits with the iPhone.

Strand consult wrote in a report, "According to the research we have conducted on the operators, not one of these has increased their market share, revenue, or their earnings as a result of introducing the iPhone. When looking at the numbers we can't see the iPhone effect -- a lot of competitors are actually doing better."

AT&T, the exclusive iPhone provider in America, is a perfect example of what Strand Consult is claiming. According to the research firm, AT&T has spent $720 million in the last quarter to subsidize the iPhone on its network. Over the same quarter, AT&T added 1.4 million wireless subscribers, about two-thirds of which opted for the iPhone.

Providers like AT&T aren’t making huge sums of money on the iPhone, what they are hoping is that the device lures customers away from other carriers and they can make money off lucrative data plans in the future.

Plan Your Wedding with 16 of the Very Best iPhone Apps

Wedding planning on your iPhone could not be easier. Throw away all those binders and files, and keep everything you need at your fingertips. I’ve worked with a lot of brides around the country, and these are the top 16 iPhone apps that couples use to help them plan their wedding. Some of these wedding apps are free, some cost a few dollars, and some of them are even included with the iPhone.

I’ve also worked out the very best way to get the most out of the standard iPhone apps. Did you know that you can create a group of your top wedding venues with links to their location on a map? How about linking your favorite photographers contact info with their blogs and websites.

Why the top 16 wedding iPhone apps? This way you can organize all the little chicklets onto a single screen for easy access and reference. (Hint: to move the iPhone app icons simply hold your finger on an app for 2-3 seconds until they start to squiggle (and a little x appears above each one), and then touch the icon and drag it to where you want it to be. If you hit the x you will be asked if you want to delete. Once you have everything in place, click the main button, and the squiggling will stop.)

All these apps can be downloaded right from your iPhone or using iTunes.

Are There Any Free iPhone Chat Rooms?

The modern Internet boasts thousands, or even millions of chat rooms. There are hundreds and thousands of websites that allow users to chat using their various chat rooms. Of these chat rooms, most are free chat rooms where the users can register and start chatting away. Every single chat room in the world of Internet sees users from various countries and cultures chatting away furiously, exchanging information and messages. iPhone chat rooms are an extension of the conventional chat rooms that allow users the same facility to chat and exchange information about themselves and others.

Free chat rooms can be categorised according to their content. While some free chat rooms are applicable for users of all ages, there are other chat rooms that specialise in adult chat and they limit the membership to adults. The best thing about free chat rooms is that they can be accessed by anyone sitting in any corner of the world and connected to the Internet. Same is the concept in iPhone chat rooms. Anyone carrying an iPhone can use the various chat applications available on the Internet and chat with other online chatters. They can either connect with contacts using instant messengers or enter any of the free chat rooms and chat with unknown people whom they have never even seen before.

The Successful Models For Selling Apps At The Apple (AAPL) App Store

The Apple (AAPL) App Store, with over 1.5 billion application downloads, has become a tremendous market where software developers can sell their products. Individuals or corporations must register with Apple and pay a small fee to become official developers in order to be able to sell applications at the Apple App Store. Apple has to approve each application prior to release. More than 10,000 developers have registered with the Apple App Store and have produced over 65,000 applications.

Apple benefits from maintaining an App Store in two ways. First, it dramatically increases the versatility and desirability of iPhones and iTouches. People can effectively customize their iTouches and iPhones by downloading the applications that complement their lifestyle. Apple also profits directly from the sale of paid applications. Apple takes a third of the price every time a user downloads an application that they have to pay for and the developer gets the rest.

Applications at the App Store fall into two categories: paid and free. The winning formula for paid apps is not complicated from a developer’s standpoint: create a great product and price it right. The creation of a successful application is still no easy feat. The Apple App Store maintains a list of the top 100 most downloaded applications. This is often the first place users go to shop for apps. The apps on the top 100 have incredible momentum so it is often very difficult for new developers to muscle their way onto the list.

The model is less straight forward for free applications. There are number of ways that developers seek to profit from offering free applications at the App Store. 24/7 Wall St. has chosen four software developers that have released products that have been among the top 100 most downloaded free applications at the App Store. Each of them seeks to profit by offering free applications in a different way.

Free app will enable cheque deposit via iPhone camera

Smart banking is moving beyond garden-variety apps that let you check bank balances and transfer money. Soon to be launched is a free iPhone app that will let members of the U.S. military and veterans, deposit checks via their iPhone camera. Read on ...

It wasn't long ago that bank customers judged the quality of their local financial institutions by the sturdiness of their columns and vault doors. That idea is a throwback to an era when money was physical, and so was security.

Now, money is just data. And banks -- especially small banks -- are evolving rapidly to reflect that new reality.

No, I'm not talking about garden-variety mobile banking applications. Simple apps that let you check bank balances, transfer money and find branch locations already feel old and stale. I'm talking about trends that free you from ever having to visit bank branch offices again -- and trends that make you want to visit.
Breaking the branch habit

The only remaining reason for many of us to visit bank branch offices, wait in line and interact with a teller is to deposit checks. That's about to change.

The United Services Automobile Association, a financial services company for members of the U.S. military and veterans, plans to launch a free iPhone app that lets you deposit checks via your iPhone camera. The service will be called USAA Deposit@Mobile. To make a deposit, you use the app to log onto your account, enter the amount of the check, snap a picture of the front and back of the check, then touch the "Send" button. The bank sends a confirmation. Here's a video demo. This is such a compelling service that I'm thinking about joining the Army to qualify.

Of course, you can always find an ATM and deposit your checks in there. But that can give you a creepy feeling. How do you know the bank won't later tell you they never got your check?

Bank of America has installed about 12,800 new ATMs that print receipts that show scans of the checks you deposit. This is nice, because it gives customers proof that checks were in fact deposited.

Get Promo Codes for Free iPhone Apps

You may have heard websites advertising free app store promo codes or stating they have a giveaway for a certain app. But how do you get those promo codes, you ask? Well, here are a few different ways you can find, receive and win free iPhone app promotional codes!

ASK AROUND
It never hurts to ask the developers of the iPhone app for a promo code in return for leaving a review on iTunes. It not only lets you try out an app that you are truly interested in using, but it allows the developer a chance to get some exposure and boost some reviews to get it seen by the App Store staff. It's a win-win situation!

FLOCK TO THE FORUMS
There are several forums online dedicated to iPhone app developers for posting promo codes. Of course, it's a great idea to register with these forums, post which promo code you used, and follow up with a review on the iTunes App Store. This is common courtesy when using their promo codes, but can be a great way to try out some games or other apps that you may have passed by at first.

SOCIAL NETWORKING
Getting on Twitter and other social networking sites is a great way to find free iPhone app promo codes. Some developers will post promo codes on their Twitter sites, or will have websites and mailing lists to notify others when new apps are created and available in the App Store. Keep in touch with some developers and return the favor by posting reviews on iTunes and you'll have plenty of sources for free iPhone apps!

Best FREE iPhone Apps for Your Preschooler

So I am a proud new iPhone owner! I don't know why I didn't get this thing sooner (actually, I do know why.. because they weren't on sale until now). One thing I have discovered is that it actually serves many purposes! One of those is entertaining and hepling to educate Graham.

Here is a list of the FREE iPhone apps for preschool/toddler aged children that I think are worth the download!

1. Toddler Teasers Shapes. This one is my favorite! Graham loves this quizzing shapes game that rewards kids with "stickers" when they have completed certain levels. A voice asks the child to identify a certain shape. If the child selects the correct shape the name is announced and there is applause and hoorays! If the child selects the wrong shape the name is still announced and the shape disappears.

2. FirstWords Sampler. This app has the picture of the item that they are spelling. The child actually moves the mixed up letters into the matching blocks to spell out the word. A voice tells the letters and the word. There are 8 different words in the free version.

Guess Infinite Dreams's Next Game, Win a Free iPhone 3GS

It's a fairly shameless marketing ploy, but we're biting because the developer of the awesome N-Gage game Hooked On: Creatures of the Deep is also giving away an iPhone 3GS, and that's the kind of bait we like to chase.

The developer is gearing up to launch its second iPhone game, but instead of just announcing it Infinite Dreams is asking you to guess what it's going to be.

A series of five YouTube videos are planned that will lay down a trail of breadcrumbs leading to the answer. You're being invited to check out these teaser trailers (a new one will be posted every two days) and tell Infinite Dreams what it's planning in a few short words.

The first clip is below, and is cryptic enough to ensure this one alone is unlikely to furnish us with an accurate guess. Keep checking in on the developer's official YouTube channel and contest page for the others. Don't miss any, or you might miss out on that shiny new 3GS.

Free iPhone Music - Only if Spotify is Allowed on the AppStore

"If Spotify has its way, iPhone owners will no longer be slaves to iTunes, song-by-song payments or finite disk capacity," Adam Taylor reports for TIME Magazine.

"Last week the Swedish company behind Spotify's streaming music provider announced plans to release a free iPhone application that will let users listen to songs played directly off of its online service, with no need to download," Taylor reports. "That would give iPhone users instant access to any of Spotify's 6 million songs, without taking up precious memory space — way more than the maximum 7,000 tracks that a 32GB iPhone can hold."

Taylor reports, "Songs can also be temporarily stored, or cached, ready to play during those moments when web connection drops, like when you're going through a tunnel or underground. Spotify's new application could change the way iPhone users listen to music. But first, it has to get the okay from Apple."

"Spotify's new application won't be available to everyone, only those who opt for the premium service, which costs $15 a month for unlimited streams... access to pre-releases and better audio quality than the free service, which forces users to listen to ads after every few songs," Taylor reports. "Spotify hopes to have its new application available on the iPhone within the next few weeks. The trick is getting Apple to approve an application that some observers see as a potential challenger to Apple's own iTunes."

Free iPhone Apps To Help You Save And Find Hot Deals

We’ve been testing some of the many iPhone applications that aim to help you save and manage money. Banks are developing a growing number of apps for the iPhone, but we’ve focused on some free, nonbank offerings.

Here, some of our favorites:

Mint offers a version of its popular budgeting tool. We like it because, like the Mint.com site, it puts all your accounts — checking, savings, loans and investments — into one place. Users can get a real-time snapshot of their financial lives and set up alerts should accounts run low. This one is handy to consult before making purchases.

SnapTell uses the camera feature of the iPhone to snap pictures of books, CDs and videogames to comparison shop online. This application can accurately identify a book by its cover and links you to reviews and prices from Amazon, eBay and other retailers. We saved $10 on a Philip Roth book because SnapTell showed us that a cheaper used copy was available online.

Yowza!!
combines a Global Positioning System with coupons, popping up coupons for nearby retailers. Good idea, but it needs some work — we found only the same Container Store offering week after week in a robust Manhattan shopping district. However, we later found some coupons for a complimentary sample-size shampoo at a nearby Kiehl’s. The application also tracks your cumulative savings.

all-51-games-free

The title says it all; there indeed are fifty-one different games of various genre in All 51 Games FREE. If you are obsessed with number and don’t care much about quality, this cluttered game is all yours. It would take you days or even weeks to try all the games.

The average rating of this game is one and half out of five from the total of 12,390 ratings. There are also no good comments for the game. Curiosity of being free and mystery of the game name drew so much downloads that the game has made to the top list.

In the , you can become famous for both good and bad reasons. You now know to which group All 51 Games FREE falls into.

Enough defaming something that doesn’t cost me a pie. Well, I can’t do that with this combo game package. The graphics are too basic and there ain’t sound or music in all the 51 games. It is nothing different from making mute animation videos of yore in this technologically advanced age.

Some of the titles in All 51 Games FREE are:

Monkey Jump, Babel, Dino Eggs, Arcade Basketball, Alien Switch, Dangerous Bananas, Jewels Mania, Hurricane, Kitchen Panic, Arcade Bowling, Blocked Car, Brick Blaster 3D, Golden Sword, Olympic Sports, Sky Warriors, Street Combat, Monsterland 2, Mad Fighters, Infiltrator, Dragon Fury, Star Blast, Bee Invaders, Kick Ups Soccer, Cupid 2, Monsterland, Blackjack Mania, Pop Pop Pop, Snake Mania, Hangman Mania, Super Dog, Cupid, Poker Mania, Memory Pets, Same Pets, Blackjack Solitaire, Dragon Jewels, Same Hearts, Fantasy Puzzle, Anagrams, Poker Solitaire, Add Bubbles, Monster Heads, Monkey Jump 2, Pumpkin Land, Fantasy Stars, Sky Warriors 2, Crazy Tank, Balloon, Battle Pirates, Babel 2, Monster Cups, Skate Duck and Clown Juggler.
