Apple does the unthinkable and approves Opera Mini for the iPhone, iPod touch

In what must be one of the most shocking developments in the whole Apple App Store versus the third-party app market comes news that Opera Mini has been approved by Apple for the iPhone and iPod touch. When Opera Software submitted the apps for Apple's prying eyes back in March, no one really took them seriously and thought that they were just showing off to drum up some press.

Well, Apple has shown Opera some leniency and Opera Mini will be available to U.S. iPhone and iPod touch users shortly. Here's the Opera press release in its entirety:

Opera today announced its popular mobile browser, Opera Mini has been approved for iPhone and iPod touch on the App Store. Opera Mini will be available as a free download within 24 hours, depending on market.

Opera Mini, with more than 50 million users worldwide, enables fast mobile Web browsing by compressing data by up to 90 percent before sending content to the device, resulting in significantly improved page loading. Users of the app will notice an uptake in speed, especially on slower networks such as the 2G Edge network. Surfing the Web with the Opera Mini App on iPhone and iPod touch will also help users save money because of its data compression capabilities. This will hold especially true while the user is incurring roaming charges.

"We are delighted to offer iPhone and iPod touch users a great browsing experience with the Opera Mini App," said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. "This app is another step toward Opera's goal of bringing the Web to more people in more places."

The Opera Mini App is available for free from the App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore

Could the walls be crumbling in Apple's heavy-handed approach to App Store acceptance/rejection? Maybe Opera just caught Steve Jobs on a good day. Who knows, but this is at least a good step forward for Apple.

Opera Mini Ready for iPhone - Wil Apple Allow It?

A big mobile browser launch and mounting frustrations add up to some intriguing iPhone storylines

Norway-based Opera Software ASA's mobile browsers -- Opera Mini 4 (currently in beta for Mini 5) and Opera Mobile 10 -- are the world's most used cell phone browsers. One of the key challenges to Opera's mobile market share over the past couple years has been Safari, the browser used on the iPhone.

Traditionally Apple did not allow third-party browsers on the iPhone. It recently relaxed these restrictions allowing third-party browsers -- but only those based on webkit. Now Opera has offered a sneak peak of Opera Mini on the iPhone, leaving many unanswered questions.

Opera Mini is based on the Presto layout engine, not Webkit, and is underpinned by Java ME API calls. Opera has already been welcomed on less unrestrictive platforms, such as Google's Android OS (which uses an emulation layer to translate the Java API calls to appropriate Android API calls). However, it seems pretty amazing if Apple actually allows Opera Mini -- a huge threat to its big mobile browsing market share -- on the iPhone.

Apple Removes 1000+ iPhone Apps from App Store Following Ratings Scam

Has it ever happened to you that you are so impressed with an iPhone app after reading through its reviews only to find after purchasing it that your own experience with the app is not even close to what the reviewers said?

Folks at the iPhoneography blog have now unearthed an iPhone ratings scam that has wiped off close to 1% of the entire App Store.

The reviews and ratings scam comes to light after one of the readers of the iPhoneography blog revealed that a relatively less popular iPhone app, 'NightCam Pro' had nearly 44 reviews with 5 star ratings. What's more, each of these reviewers had posted all their reviews on iPhone apps released by just a single app developer - China based Molinker Inc. The issue which was brought to the notice of Phil Schiller from Apple resulted in an immediate removal of all the 1011 iPhone apps developed by the company from the App Store.

While the removal of 1000+ apps should come as a bolt out of the blue, not many should find the scam itself surprising. Most iPhone users would have come across reviews that appear shady at least once in a while. How does this actually happen? In this particular case, it is possible that the app developer made use of the 50 promo codes that Apple offers to the developers for every approved app to create these ghost reviewers. Ironically, one of Molinker's apps, ColorMagic which had nearly 203 fake reviews was till recently on the iPhone apps front page as an App Store 'Staff Favorite'.

Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing Phil Schiller has made it his personal mission to fix the iPhone's App Store. Phil Shoemaker, Apple’s Director of Application Technology is also playing a hand. Why would the top brass at a company like Apple be having to work so hard to "fix" a wildly successful marketplace that sold over a billion apps? It boils down to one thing -- perception.

Apple has consistently shown inconsistency, approving usenet applications designed to assist in filesharing, while rejecting others that monitor your torrent client. Likewise it rejected Google Voice, while approving a similar app from VoIP service Vonage. Still other controversial apps -- like the infamous "Babyshaker" app -- it approved only to later reject. However, there are some signs that Apple may finally be loosening up when it comes to its app store censorship.

This week Apple approved Spotify Mobile, a European music download service's application. The app will compete directly with iTunes in digital music sales.

In the past, Apple forbade most applications that competed with the handful of applications it offers for the iPhone. It relaxed this restriction slightly, recently allowing rival web browsers -- but only those based on WebKit, the rendering engine Apple's Safari browser uses.

For those interested, Spotify offers 6 million songs on-demand for $16. You can stream songs to your phone, or download songs to listen to when offline.

Free iPhone development tool GameSalad is close to launch

It might be argued that the last thing we need is more games on the App Store, but US tools company Gendai Games is about to make it even easier to develop iPhone games thanks to its GameSalad technology.

Launched a year ago, as a beta product, GameSalad is an open platform that enables non-programmers to create games for iPhone, the web, and social networks such as Facebook.

The application is available as a free download and combines the under-the-hood complex algorithms necessary for implementing artificial intelligence and gameplay with an easy-to-use interface that doesn't require any programming knowledge.

It also hooks into a development community so you can collaborate with other users, both in terms of game design and and implementation.

The formal release of GameSalad will finally enable you to sell your games on the App Store.

"We're at an extremely exciting point in our company's life," says Gendai Games' CEO, Michael Agustin.

"The number one feature that everyone has been clamouring for is an easy, more intuitive way to create a game for the iPhone. With GameSalad's visual-based logic system along with its drag-and-drop interface, we are poised to make that a reality."

Why are iPhone Apps Rejected by the App Store? Here is Why...

After rejections, one Apple executive is trying hard to win customers -- and developers -- back

Apple's app store practices have bordered on schizophrenia, with it frequently accepting applications only to later reject them and rejecting others only to later accept them. Worse yet, frequently rejections seem to follow no consistent pattern, with some apps being rejected for containing some sort of forbidden content, while others with that same content get accepted.

These inconsistencies have led to customers growing dissatisfied with the iPhone -- or in some cases even leaving it. They have also led to a growing discontent among developers, some of whom have also jumped ship. And it has even brought down a government investigation concerning Apple's role in rejecting the Google Voice app.

However, there is one man who hopes to fix the system. Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing Phil Schiller is trying to right the iPhone App Store and is personally taking a hand in trying to win back customers, developers, and placate government investigators.

Free iPhone App: Match.com

Match.com has come out with a very useful iPhone application that allows its members to date on their iPhone or iPod Touch anywhere they have a connection. The application has only received a 2.5/5 rating at the Apple App Store which surprises me.

The stand out function of the Match.com iPhone Application would have to be the GPS single locator. It allows you to see what singles are available around you at any given point in time. This is a great way to find the singles that are truly within your vicinity. This can be a little more information than you’d like to share, so you do have the option of not enabling this feature.

Some of the features are not available with this application unless you have a paid Match.com membership. The main feature you’ll be missing out on is the ability to email members. So if you don’t have a paid membership, I doubt you’ll be able to get very far in your communication with members if you’re unable to email each other.

iPhone developers claim Apple not paying up

May isn't shaping up as one of the best months for iPhone developers. A number of complaints have surfaced over the last week, from the usual App Store rejections (as in the SlingPlayer case), to developers claiming that Apple isn't paying them.

According to a TechCrunch report, a vocal group of developers is considering suing Apple for breach of contract after claiming to have not received payment for downloads of their applications.

You can see examples of complaints on developer forums at iphonedevsdk.com, where the posts indicate that some developers have not been paid for App Store sales from as far back as Fall 2008. In one instance, there are examples of e-mail between a developer and Apple. The developer's attempts to repeatedly contact Apple's finance department to complain resulted in a response from Apple claiming that the complaints "border on harassment."

It remains to be seen whether lawsuits will be filed by developers against Apple. But given Apple's outstanding revenue performance in a bad economy for the last quarter, the hugely successful iTunes App Store, and Apple's estimated $29 billion in cash reserves, we wouldn't be surprised if some developers find it hard to believe that Apple shouldn't pay them. Apple's App Store Thinks Small

With a new ad campaign and business-oriented downloads, the iPhone maker targets company owners and entrepreneurs.

(Fortune Magazine) -- In the battle for corporate customers, BlackBerry reigns supreme. But will the iPhone become the mobile device of choice for small businesses?

Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) is pursuing entrepreneurs aggressively with a new ad campaign featuring a menu of iPhone applications for running tiny enterprises. All told, more than 1,600 business apps are now available for the device, including software from FedEx (FDX, Fortune 500) and accounting site Mint.com. The most popular business app turns the phone into a voice recorder.

The availability of such a wide variety of small-business-oriented apps prompted Jason Miller, owner of San Diego construction and design company Wise Man, to switch his firm to iPhones from BlackBerrys about eight months ago.

His managers travel among construction sites, and they use an iPhone app called Air Sharing to trade blueprints and time-tracking software TSheets to monitor workers' hours. The GasBag app helps the team find the lowest fuel prices in San Diego County. Miller, who says he has spent about $100 on iPhone software, personally does about 30% of his "computing" on the iPhone, the rest on an office desktop.

The person who made the billionth download will get about $13,000 in prizes

Despite how some consumers feel about Apple products, few will argue that Apple has some of the most desirable products and best product marketing on the planet. Apple has dominated the mobile music player market and is now conquering the smartphone market with its iPhone.

Apple says that in all it will give away $13,000 in prizes for the contest. All App downloader's were automatically entered into the contest.

Free iPhone Pirating App Attacks Rival Pirate App Store

A new application has been created for the iPhone which is designed to not only get all the latest Apple apps free of charge, but to teach a commercial iPhone pirate a lesson by opening his servers to all.

Many users of jailbroken iPhones will be familiar with the Installous application. Installous, from the people at Hackulo.us, allows the simple installation of apps previously available from the official Apple App Store - but free of charge with Appulous, of course.

This system hasn’t had much serious competition but all that changed recently when a new service/app appeared. Known as ‘Mega’, this application/system currently offers direct downloads of a staggering number of App Store apps, over 4000 at last count - a full list is available here.

However, while Installous operates on a donation basis and doesn’t host any copyright infringing content itself, Mega offers its services via paid subscription - $9.99 for 1 month, $23.99 for 3 months and $41.99 for 6 months - which at least in part probably reflects the large costs associated with Mega hosting the content themselves.

What happened to free apps on the App Store?

When the app store was first born, there were quite a few great free applications. Facebook, AIM, and especially Aurora Feint all come to mind. But now the free apps on the App Store are mainly “Lite” versions of paid applications. Sure, it’s a smart move financially, but does it always make sense, and is it always necessary?

In the past week, AIM posted an update to its one free AIM application, telling users they now owned AIM Lite, which would be riddled with ads. They could purchase regular AIM if they so choose, and get rid of the ads. The same thing happened with Aurora Feint once the developers started making spinoffs and new versions. Owners of the full-featured “Free” app all of the sudden found themselves with a “Lite” copy of Aurora Feint 2, now with 100% more advertising.

Microsoft Has a Free iPhone App in the App Store

Seadragon has been implemented as the "Deep Zoom" feature of Silverlight

Microsoft apparently has “deep” feelings towards the iPhone (or Apple), as the company behind the Windows OS has released a free iPhone app, and a cool one at that. Immediately available for download from the iTunes App Store, Seadragon Mobile lets iPhone and iPod touch users zoom in as deep as possible on high quality images with near zero transition times.

Microsoft's app makes it possible for users to “browse large quantities of high-resolution imagery smoothly and quickly with a flick or a pinch,” according to the iTunes App Store description. “Explore massive galaxies, pore over maps, or flip through collections of photographs, all over the air,” says the Windows maker.

You can also add your own photos, or browse some that are already available on the official Photosynth website. For example, you can grab a picture of Times Square at night and try to spot anyone who might have been picking their nose at the time the photo was taken.

The app's main features, as Microsoft points out, include the ability to view thousands of images over the air, view massive gigapixel pictures, explore Photosynth collections in 2D (including your own), add your own PhotoZoom / Deep Zoom Composer content, and even an RSS feed service.

The iTunes App Store is a Free iPhone Killer App

The killer app for the iPhone is — drum roll, please — the iTunes App Store. Five months after Apple launched its online emporium, I believe it even more, having downloaded a gaggle of programs, including some that transform my iPhone 3G into a harmonica, metric system converter and level.

There are now more than 10,000 of these applications for the original iPhone, its 3G successor and in most cases, for the iPod Touch. Many are free.

I encounter buggy programs from time to time, but there are frequent updates to fix such snags.

And because of the drain on the battery, Apple still won't let developers produce apps that run in the background. So forget about listening to Internet radio while checking e-mail. I'm also waiting on an app that will let you shoot video.

iPhone drives Shazam usage

Music discovery specialist sees huge uplift in traffic from iPhone version of its service.

Shazam is reaping the rewards from its free iPhone app, with average usage ballooning to up to 20 interactions a month compared to three-to-five times a lifetime on regular handsets.

The company, which enables people to identify music they are listening to and then follow links to either buy or share a song, has already seen the iPhone version of its service downloaded 1.5 million times from App Store.

Speaking in a Reuters video report, Shazam CEO Andrew Fisher said: "On average we were seeing people use our service three-to-five times over their lifetime.

Why We Still Need the iPhone App Black Market

A year ago, we said that no iPhone SDK meant no killer apps. It came, and the apps are here in staggering numbers. But many of the amazing apps and concepts we grew to love as unofficial apps aren't here, and only about 100 of the 500+ apps at launch in the official store are really useful or desirable—the rest are dupes or just bad. Secret URL May Allow Apple to Delete Your iPhone Apps Remotely

It's supposed to be your "life in your pocket," not Apple's. But a piece of code discovered in the iPhone operating system might keep you under Apple's control.

Jonathan Zdrianski, author of the book iPhone Open Application Development, discovered a URL hidden in iPhone's CoreLocation that he believes the iPhone uses to check whether any apps on your phone match with those listed in a database of blacklisted applications. Presumably, that would allow Apple to remotely de-authorize those apps, or perhaps even delete them.

"This suggests that the iPhone calls home once in a while to find out what applications it should turn off," Zdrianski wrote. "At the moment, no apps have been blacklisted, but by all appearances, this has been added to disable applications that the user has already downloaded and paid for, if Apple so chooses to shut it down."

Hum. So then all of those who got away with NetShare before it disappeared from the App Store aren't so safe/lucky after all.

Now, if Apple were more organized with regard to what appears and disappears from the App Store, they probably wouldn't need this emergency procedure. What's the point of an approval process if the useless, $1,000 "I Am Rich" app is going to make it out the door, only to be yanked immediately afterward?
