Rumors: A new, better iPhone 3.0 this summer?

They can’t tell us “where or who, but [someone] pretty high up at AT&T’s food chain” decided to spill the beans on the next iPhone, which is, wait for the big shock…better, faster, stronger, complete with more hand gestures. Okay, I added that last part, but it’s true. So, here are the unaltered details straight from the source:

• New iPhone announcement around mid-June (duh)
  
• New iPhone will be faster and have a more seamless experience unmatched by any device (could be just talking about 3.0, but we think it’s also a new iPhone)
• U-Verse iPhone application; will allow control of your home DVR (play, pause, rewind, etc.)
• The annual iPhone launch is “becoming a tradition.“
• Nothing official is being confirmed, but they said that people should prep for an exciting time this summer.
• AT&T is said to be working with Apple to create a unified product with an unparalleled experience across all their products and services.
• Apple’s 3.0 software should tell us where the iPhone platform is going… uh, k?
• They said customers shouldn’t need to choose from AT&T’s high-end devices because of features, they should choose based on preferences. The gap in capability should be filled with the new iPhone. Ok, bets on slide out QWERTY, autofocus camera, video sharing, blah blah?
• Seems like the higher speed HSDPA (7.2Mbps) is being hinted at too which should confirm the earlier rumors of the new Infineon chipset.
• The $99 3G netbook will start selling this summer, and the first one won’t be a Windows OS.

Free iPhone Apps Roundup for March 13th, 2009

It was another slow week on the App Store, no big name freebies, but I still managed to dig up some cool free apps and games. Check them out.

• Faces Visual Dialer Lite - Sick of how you access your contacts on your iPhone? This app lets you tap faces to call, SMS, email, map etc. Don’t worry, you’ll be able to fit all three of your friends on here (it actually supports up to 24).
• iPuppy Chihuahua Lite - As if your life didn’t demand enough out of you already, you can punish yourself further with a virtual pet. And not just any virtual pet, no, the most clichéd and irritating of them all: the chihuahua. The day I find a chihuahua fending for itself in the wild, preferably in a pack, is the day I’ll start respecting it as an animal.
• Comic Touch Lite - Add comic style word balloons to your pictures for instant humor. I mean come on, you know what your cat is thinking, so you’d better stamp it on the picture so the whole world can know, too.
• 3D Brick Breaker Revolution Free - Why break bricks in 2D when 3D bricks are clearly 50% better than 2D bricks? Yeah, I’m not sure either. This free version gives you 8 levels in the extreme Classic Mode.
• Edge Lite - Personally, this kind of game would make me irate, but I’m sure some of you would enjoy it. No, the game, not me getting irate. Geez. Basically, you push a cube around a “geometric universe.“ Five free levels, and five free songs to listen to while playing.

What happened to free apps on the App Store?

When the app store was first born, there were quite a few great free applications. Facebook, AIM, and especially Aurora Feint all come to mind. But now the free apps on the App Store are mainly “Lite” versions of paid applications. Sure, it’s a smart move financially, but does it always make sense, and is it always necessary?

In the past week, AIM posted an update to its one free AIM application, telling users they now owned AIM Lite, which would be riddled with ads. They could purchase regular AIM if they so choose, and get rid of the ads. The same thing happened with Aurora Feint once the developers started making spinoffs and new versions. Owners of the full-featured “Free” app all of the sudden found themselves with a “Lite” copy of Aurora Feint 2, now with 100% more advertising.
