Google working on bringing free nav app to other platforms than Android

Smartphones are highly converged devices that offer users the ability to surf the web, talk, text, and take pictures. One of the more popular uses for smartphones today is as GPS navigation devices. Most platforms have GPS applications that require the user to purchase the app or pay a monthly fee.

Google unveiled a free GPS navigation platform for its Android devices in October of 2009 that provided free GPS navigation services in America. The platform recently landed in Europe for free as well. Along with the move into Europe, Google has announced that it intends to extend its free Google Maps Navigation service to other platforms.

Those other platforms include the iPhone. Getting its free GPS navigation platform onto the iPhone would be huge for users. TomTom, Navigon, and other providers on the iPhone right now charge $60 or more for GPS applications and some like AT&T charge a monthly fee for GPS navigation.

The launch of Google Maps Navigation in Europe is a big deal; Europe was left out of the launch last year. UK users can get Google Maps Navigation on their Android device as a free update to Google Maps.

“Google Maps pre-caches the entire route,” said Mobile Maps product manager, Steve Lee. “It needs a data connection when you ask for navigation. But while driving to your destination, if you intermittently lose the connection, it will still carry on. As long as you stay on the route.”

The free GPS service will undoubtedly hurt paid offerings from companies like Garmin and TomTom in the UK. Google simply says that other providers had become stale and its offering will force them to innovate in the GPS market.

Opera Mini Approved for iPhone! Yes, That is Right!

Apple does the unthinkable and approves Opera Mini for the iPhone, iPod touch

In what must be one of the most shocking developments in the whole Apple App Store versus the third-party app market comes news that Opera Mini has been approved by Apple for the iPhone and iPod touch. When Opera Software submitted the apps for Apple's prying eyes back in March, no one really took them seriously and thought that they were just showing off to drum up some press.

Well, Apple has shown Opera some leniency and Opera Mini will be available to U.S. iPhone and iPod touch users shortly. Here's the Opera press release in its entirety:

Opera today announced its popular mobile browser, Opera Mini has been approved for iPhone and iPod touch on the App Store. Opera Mini will be available as a free download within 24 hours, depending on market.

Opera Mini, with more than 50 million users worldwide, enables fast mobile Web browsing by compressing data by up to 90 percent before sending content to the device, resulting in significantly improved page loading. Users of the app will notice an uptake in speed, especially on slower networks such as the 2G Edge network. Surfing the Web with the Opera Mini App on iPhone and iPod touch will also help users save money because of its data compression capabilities. This will hold especially true while the user is incurring roaming charges.

"We are delighted to offer iPhone and iPod touch users a great browsing experience with the Opera Mini App," said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. "This app is another step toward Opera's goal of bringing the Web to more people in more places."

Could the walls be crumbling in Apple's heavy-handed approach to App Store acceptance/rejection? Maybe Opera just caught Steve Jobs on a good day. Who knows, but this is at least a good step forward for Apple.

MapQuest Offers Voice Guidance in Free iPhone App

Before now, only Android users were able to take advantage of free turn-by-turn navigation from their phone.

iPhone users, now its your turn.

Through its official blog, MapQuest announced yesterday the inclusion of voice guidance in the latest version of its free iPhone app.

In the post, MapQuest principal product manager Michael Iams describes a trip he took from his Las Vegas hotel to the airport with help from the new application. Basically, users search for the location they are interested in then press the Start button to begin navigation. Whenever you hit a detour or miss a turn along the way, the application brings up a prompt with a button that reads “Reroute me.

Iams also mentions that the app doesn’t waste the phones power, dimming the screen during navigation and allowing the user to customize energy settings.

Other than Google Maps on Android 2.0 phones, the MapQuest app is the only free turn-by-turn navigation app available and the only one for the iPhone, so do check it out.

Free iPhone Calls, Free iPhone SMS: Google Voice now on the iPhone

Google has released an entirely Web-based version of its service that works on the iPhone as well as Palm’s Pre and Pixi handsets.

Apple may still officially be “pondering” whether it should approve Google’s Google Voice app for iPhone, but there’s finally good news: Google has released an entirely Web-based version of the service (at m .google.com/voice). It works on the iPhone as well as Palm’s Pre and Pixi handsets, and brings a large chunk of the functionality of the native Voice apps for Android and BlackBerry to your phone’s browser.

This new version, like mobile Gmail, is among the most app-like browser services I’ve ever seen, period, letting you dial from your Google contacts list or a keypad, read and listen to messages, send text messages, and configure the app right within mobile Safari. When you make calls using it, the person who answers sees your Google Voice number, not the “real” one associated with your phone: Google makes an outgoing call from the iPhone, then reroutes it over a line of its own.



There’s only so far that a Web-based telephony app can go. On Android and BlackBerry, Google Voice can insert itself as your default phone interface, and it gets access to the contacts stored on your phone. On the iPhone, it stays a secondary interface and can’t see your local contacts. (You can, however, use Google Sync to sync your phone’s contacts with your Google Account.) When you make an outgoing call, your iPhone confirms you want to do so and shows Google’s routing number rather than the one you’re really calling–kind of confusing. And while the interface for wrangling messages is a vast improvement on the rudimentary one in the old Web-based Google Voice, it still send you out of Safari and into QuickTime when you want to listen to a message.

Free iPhone App: Keep track of your drink limits

Britons can now keep a tab on how much alcohol they are drinking, courtesy of a free smart phone application.

The free iPhone application was launched by public health minister Gillian Merron Monday as the festive party season gets under way.

The device which can be downloaded onto smart phones like the iPhone, will allow users to see how many units of alcohol there are in their drink, keep a running total of their consumption and get personalised feedback on their drinking habits.

Studies have shown that people underestimate how much alcohol they have drunk on a night out and may exceed the safe limits without realising it.

Recommended limits are two to three units a day for women - the equivalent of one medium to large glass of wine - and three to four units a day for men - a large glass to a glass and a half, or two pints of beer - with at least two alcohol-free days a week.

Drink-driving during the festive season is a major public health concern in Britain.

The number of people killed from drinking and driving fell from 560 in 2006 to 406 in 2007 and those seriously injured from 1,970 to 1,760 during the same period.

However, it is a great time waster that allows you to transform an iPhone picture in seconds. It's got all the basics - you can crop, rotate, and flip pictures. You can make them black and white and change their tint and saturation. But it goes beyond that with some attention-grabbing and fun, if not entirely useful features. You can use the "Pop" effect you can turn your picture into an Andy Warhol like design. You can make a sketched version of your pic or change it into rainbow colors (who doesn't want their picture changed into a rainbow?). It's got great UI and makes it easy to save your pics to share.

Dropbox Launches Free iPhone App

Dropbox released a free iPhone app! The app is of course free, and offers access to your Dropbox while you’re on-the-go. Access, view and download your files right from your iPhone for offline viewing. Take new photos or videos and sync them to your Dropbox… Or even share links to files in your Dropbox, all from the convenience of your iPhone.

In case you’ve never heard of Dropbox before, here’s the official skinny:

Shazam Limits Free iPhone App, Adds $5 App

Shazam, which names songs by listening to a clip that’s playing on the radio or stereo, is one of the most popular cellphone applications to date — and one of the rare few to turn a profit. It’s been downloaded more than 10 million times and has sold out its inventory of advertising space, according to maker Shazam Entertainment. After listening to and identifying the song that’s playing, Shazam also links to iTunes, taking a cut from the fee people pay to download songs from Apple.

However, Shazam says it makes most of its money by selling the app to paying customers, such as on BlackBerry smart phones or through deals with carriers such as Verizon , chief executive Andrew Fisher said.

“When we started, we charged for the product,” he said, adding that the free iPhone version was a “departure.”

Shazam had hoped that mobile advertising and iTunes downloads would sustain the free app, but with the recession, that has not happened. The company is now fixing that detour by tacking on a $5 charge (like all paid app downloads from its App Store, Apple keeps 30% of the charge). Mr. Fisher says mobile advertising was one of the first victims of the recession, and he doesn’t expect ad rates to bounce to levels to sustain free apps for at least two years.

A free version of Shazam will still remain on the iPhone, but it will only name up to five songs a month. To get more, customers will have to cough up for the premium edition. Existing Shazam users, however, can keep using their free, unlimited versions.

“Historically, people have been conditioned to pay for applications,” Mr. Fisher said. He said he doesn’t know how many people will download the premium version. It adds music recommendations, top-hits charts and a search feature to look up a song by name or artist.

How to make $900+ a day with Free iPhone Apps

Some free iPhone apps rake in far more revenue than their paid counterparts. Take Inedible Software’s Shotgun, a free app that lets you load and fire a virtual shotgun by tilting your device accordingly, sort of like you’d wield the real thing. Thanks to in-game ads, this app rakes in $900+ in daily revenue, none of which is shared with Apple. While Shotgun fights for shelf space and your attention in the App Store alongside thousands of other free iPhone apps, it pairs the concept of free with an eyebrow-raising idea to raise above the mediocrity of junky $0.99 offerings.

Developers are taking notice of ad-supported apps.

Drawing from the nation’s obsession with guns, the app reproduces the loading and firing sounds of a shotgun. The twist: the app taps the iPhone’s accelerometer sensor to simulate the loading and firing. For example, in order to cock the on-screen shotgun, hold your device vertically and tilt it rapidly down then up. Do this right and you’ll hear a recognizable sound of a shell being chambered. From there, simply align your device horizontally and tilt it up sharply to fire the gun. That’s all there is to it, really.

Unlike most entertainment apps fitting a similar description, such as fart machines and steam generators, Shotgun is provided free of charge in exchange for putting up with small 300×50 pixel adds that rotate at the UI bottom, courtesy of the Palo Alto startup dubbed MobClix. Hailed as the largest mobile ad exchange network, MobClix connects iPhone developers to thousands of advertisers who buy ad slots in mobile apps.

eBay Made $400 Million This Year From Its Free iPhone App

According to eBay CEO John Donahoe, shoppers have already spent about $400 million on the popular commerce site using the company’s free iPhone application.

The number pales in comparison with eBay’s total sales figure ($59.7 billion last year), but it’s fairly significant considering the fact that the iPhone has a relatively small market share – about 15% of the smartphone segment – and mobile payment transactions are still new to many. Who would have predicted around half a billion dollar in sales a year would be recorded through the eBay iPhone app when it debuted on the App Store last year?

According to this report by the Financial Times, some wealthy people have used the mobile app to buy a Lamborghini, a Bentley and a $150,000 boat. And if Mobile Marketer heard Donahoe right when he talked numbers at a summit in Las Vegas, the Lamborghini went for $350,000. Talk about being at ease with making purchases from mobile devices.

Most likely, these are the high-profile exceptions to the rule and most people use the app to buy books, clothing and electronics much like regular eBay shoppers do. In total, approximately 4.6 million iPhone owners have downloaded and installed the app to date.

Free iPhone Apps to Make Money More Easily Thanks to Apple

Apple said Thursday that it will let iPhone application developers offer their users the option to buy additional content or features within a free app on its App Store.

App developers said they received an email notice from Apple informing them that the in-app purchase feature was now available for free apps and that it would “simplify your development by creating a single version of your app that uses in App Purchase to unlock additional functionality, eliminating the need to create Lite versions of your app.” A spokeswoman for Apple confirmed the news.

The in-app purchase feature, which was first introduced in March, allows developers to offer fresh content for purchase within an app such as new levels in a game, additional books in an e-book app, or expanded capability in productivity apps. The caveat, however, was that the feature was only available for paid apps, which meant that developers had to charge at least 99 cents.

Developers say that the latest announcement helps in two ways. First, it makes it much easier for them to make a business out of free apps. Until now, developers sold ads within their free apps or tried to convert users to a paid version with more content.

Free iPhone App To View Videos And Movies On The Go

The National Film Board of Canada is launching a new iPhone application that allows free viewing of hundreds of documentaries, animated films and trailers.

Users can stream a video as they watch it or temporarily store it on the iPhone, to be played back at any time up to 24 hours later.

The full list of videos is available at NFB.ca, where the films can also be viewed.

The NFB's was founded in 1939 and has since created over 13,000 productions and won over 5,000 awards, including 12 Oscars and more than 90 Genies.
