Apple Bans iPhone Hackers From iTunes

Apple, a company founded by a pair of ex-hackers, continues to turn its back on its roots

Microsoft took a lot of flak for recently banning the Xbox Live accounts of customers who modified their hardware in violation of the unit's EULA. The move for many brought back not-so-fond memories of Apple's attempt to "brick" unlocked iPhones in 2007.

Now things have come full circle, with Apple reportedly moving to crack down on iPhone hacking by banning hackers iTunes accounts.

One hacker, Sherif Hashim recently boasted online about finding an exploit that could allow for the iPhone OS v3.1.3 to be unlocked (be made useable on any compatible GSM network, not just Apple's partners, i.e. in the U.S., AT&T). Unfortunately, Hashim was foolish enough to use his screenname in his iTunes account email. He discovered just days after his boast of the new unlock that his iTunes account had been disabled.

He tweets:

Your Apple ID was banned for security reasons", that’s what i get when i try to go to the app store, they must be really angry :) ))))
and guess what my apple ID was, "sherif_hashim@yahoo.com", what a fool was me not to notice :) )), can’t help laughing, they are babies :) ))
Another iPhone hacker, iH8sn0w, who produces sn0wbreeze, also reports being banned by identical means, tweeting, "@sherif_hashim lol, they did that to my ih8sn0wyday[@t]googmail.com too. (right after I posted XEMN)…"

The interesting part about the ban on Sherif Hashim, though, is that he didn't even release his exploit, which has been confirmed to work by the team of hackers known as the iPhone Dev Team. Still, Apple showed little mercy in sparing his account once they discovered his claims.

Free iPhone application to quit smoking

Smokers interested in quitting the habit can now get some serious help from their iPhones - a new free application of the smart phone provides a

live quitline coach and uses live text to advice on how to kick the butt.

Developed by The George Washington University’s School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS) and the National Tobacco Cessation Collaborative (NTCC), “ My QuitLine ” app also provides evidence-based treatment for quitting.

It connects the user to the National Cancer Institute’s quitline service where they speak to a live quitline coach or use live text to get advice on quitting.

GW’s Dr. Lorien Abroms, assistant research professor in the Department of Prevention and Community Health, designed the app with feedback from the NTCC, after reading an NTCC report about the lack of iPhone apps that link smokers to proven therapies.

“Quitline counseling has been shown to double a person’s chance of quitting smoking. It is important to make sure that in these new media environments, people still receive information about what has been proven to work in quitting smoking, and get access to tools that are based on these proven therapies,” said Abroms.

Users can look for the app by searching “ My QuitLine ” or “quit smoking” on their iPhone or on iTunes.

GrϋvMe App Allows for iTunes-free iPhone Entertainment

Startup Florida company M3X Media is aiming to free iPhone users from the iTunes software.

The company — which announced it raised $10.5 million in funding in February — April 21 launched a public beta test of its GrϋvMe service, which allows iPhone users to play games, listen to music and watch movies, without using Apple’s popular music- and movie-based application.

“M3X Media’s optimized site for the iPhone and the new GrϋvMe service represent well-deserved freedom of choice for all consumers of digital entertainment,” said Jim Devericks, M3X Media chairman and CEO. “Until now, Apple and the service providers have called the shots as to what consumers can view and listen to on their wireless devices and how much they pay for it.”

M3X Media said the service will feature full-length movies and cable TV programming once the beta testing period ends. However, a company spokesman was not available to share which content owners have signed on for the service.

Create Free iPhone Ringtones Using iTunes in Windows

One of the things that Apple hasn’t made easy for iPhone owners is providing a way to create custom ringtones in Windows. If you’re a Mac owner you can use GarageBand, but Apple doesn’t provide that application on Windows. Instead what they expect you to do is purchase a song for $0.99, and then convert it to a ringtone for another $0.99.

As it turns out in a few steps you can actually convert a DRM-free song into a ringtone using only iTunes in Windows. The trick also works for Mac users, but using GarageBand is a lot simpler so we’re focusing primarily on the Windows side.

Here’s what you need to do:

1. Start iTunes and find the [DRM-free] song you want to convert to a ringtone. Right-click on it and select the Get Info option.
   
   
   
   
   
   
2. On the Options tab locate the Start Time and End Time options. This is where you want to specify the portion of the song you wanted converted into a ringtone. Check both of the boxes, and make sure your ringtone is under 30-seconds. Press OK when finished.

The iTunes App Store is a Free iPhone Killer App

The killer app for the iPhone is — drum roll, please — the iTunes App Store. Five months after Apple launched its online emporium, I believe it even more, having downloaded a gaggle of programs, including some that transform my iPhone 3G into a harmonica, metric system converter and level.

There are now more than 10,000 of these applications for the original iPhone, its 3G successor and in most cases, for the iPod Touch. Many are free.

I encounter buggy programs from time to time, but there are frequent updates to fix such snags.

And because of the drain on the battery, Apple still won't let developers produce apps that run in the background. So forget about listening to Internet radio while checking e-mail. I'm also waiting on an app that will let you shoot video.

(How To Create) Free iPhone Ringtones

This is a fairly simple process to create ringtones with iTunes with a PC.

1. Find the song you want to convert into a ringtone. Find about 25-30 second section of the song and log the start / stop time.
2. Right Click on the song and click get info
3. Click Options Tab, check the start time box and end time and enter your start and stop time, i.e. 0:23-0:53 click ok
4. Right Click the song and select create AAC Version
5. Right Click the song and show in windows explorer
6. In explorer you should see 2 copies of the song now, the smaller copy is going to be the ringtone, right click the smaller version and click rename, change the m4p extension to m4r and hit enter key
7. Double click the renamed file it should now appear in your ringtones for you too sync with your iphone

Apple posts fix for iTunes 8 Windows blue screen of death issue

Apple has posted an updated version of the iTunes 8 installer that purportedly resolves a previously reported issue in which connection of an iPhone or iPod touch to a Windows Vista system results in a blue screen of death (BSOD).

An Apple support note states:

“After installing iTunes 8 for Windows, some users may see a blue screen error message when connecting iPhone or iPod to a Windows Vista computer.”

The fix involves uninstalling Apple Mobile Device Support then reinstalling the updated iTunes 8 package. Not coincidentally, one of our previously published workarounds involved uninstalling Apple Mobile Device Support then reinstalling iTunes 7.7.

With a good amount of students today owning either an iPhone or an iPod touch, the launch of the App Store has brought many fantastic apps. Just as there is an app for almost everyone, there are more than a handful that are useful for students everywhere. Here’s a look at some that stand out.

Months have passed, and I simply cannot stop raving about this fantastic note service. The all-in-one internet note solution has brought a good amount of the computer experience to the palm of your hand — create, edit, and organize your notes. Then, Evernote will always make sure that your notes stay synced as long as you have an internet connection handy. And yes, I emphasize on the internet connection because the iPhone version still needs to store the notes locally without relying on it. But with free campus Wi-Fi, where can you go wrong?

Class Action Suit May be Pending for Apple

Apple's latest iPhone moves may have earned it a new class-action law suit--Apple's answer: purchase a new iPhone.

As reported on DailyTech, Apple Inc. disabled unlocked iPhones with its Firmware 1.1.1 update by putting them into activation limbo. The unlocked phones could not make any calls until activated with a valid AT&T card and iTunes. Even then, the phones would sometimes still be locked, according to preliminary reports. Apple covered its bases, by providing a "slide for emergency" option which allows users to make 911 calls on their newly-bricked iPhone.

While many users simply are not going to install the update or are hoping for a cracked version of the patch to be released, some are seeking legal avenues to fight Apple's strike on the modding/hacking/homebrew community.

iPhone's Bluetooth Bug Under Hackers' Microscope

Almost lost in the hubbub over Thursday's iPhone firmware update and whether it would "brick" unlocked phones was the fact that Apple Inc. patched 10 vulnerabilities -- twice the number of fixes issued since the phone's June debut.

The iPhone 1.1.1 update, which like previous upgrades is delivered through Apple's iTunes software, fixes seven flaws in the built-in Safari browser, two in the smart phone's Mail application and one in its use of Bluetooth, the short-range wireless technology.

The seven Safari vulnerabilities include several cross-site scripting (XSS) flaws, one that can disclose the URL of other viewed pages -- an online banking site, say -- and another that lets attackers execute malicious JavaScript in pages delivered by the SSL-encrypted HTTPS protocol. One of the Safari flaws, and an associated vulnerability in Mail, involve "tel:" links, which can be exploited by hackers to dial a number without the user confirming the call.

Hacked 1.0 iPhone Firmware vs. Official 1.1.1

9to5Mac has gone to the trouble of enumerating the myriad differences between using the hacked 1.0.2 iTunes software and the newly-released official 1.1.1 setup. It went into the details of the new updates and offered a nice chart. It's too complicated for me, though, so here's an "at a glace" graphic.

Yes, we're being a bit mean. But we do it only because we know that, in the end, Apple can still make everything alright, even if it comes well-after the iPhone makes its triple salto into mass-market orbit this holiday season. There's a lot a computer can do beyond make phone calls and surf the web, and chaining this little powerhouse down is a damned shame of PSP-like proportions.

In the meantime, the only thing for it is to get a knitted iPhone, which offers something neither of these rivals can boast: cuddliness.

Put Free Music, Youtube/Google Video, DVD/Video to iPhone

Lots of people have owned iPhone since 2 months ago, but many of them still have difficulties putting music, videos and other resources on iPhone. I have been using my iPhone for quite a long time, and some tips below are what I have learned to put everything I can on my iPhone:

1. Limewire music to iPhone
2. Youtube video to iPhone
3. Google videos to iPhone
4. DVD/Video to iPhone
5. Sync music and video to iPhone

1. Put music and videos from Limewire to iPhone

Limewire is a download tool I assume lot of us use. I often use it to download free music and videos and put them on my iPhone. If you don’t have Limewire, you can download it from its official website http://www.limewire.com/

Search and download songs from Limewire. You may get songs in all sorts of formats, but not all formats are supported by iPhone. Usually I select three formats: MP3, AAC and M4A formats that are supported by iPhone and can be directly transferred to iPhone using iTunes. For the detailed specs info, you can visit http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html . After you download the songs, open your iTunes, click “File” from the upper left corner, select “Add file to library”, browse your computer hard drive and find the songs downloaded by Limewire, select the songs you prefer, click OK and the songs will be put in your iTunes. Then you can just transfer the songs to your iPhone from iTunes.

Starbucks to Give Away 50 Million Songs

Starbucks Corp. plans to give away 50 million free digital songs to customers in all of its domestic coffee houses to promote a new wireless iTunes music service that's about to debut in select markets.

From Oct. 2 to Nov. 7, baristas in the company's more than 10,000 U.S. stores will hand out about 1.5 million "Song of the Day" cards each day. The cards can be redeemed at Apple Inc.'s online iTunes Store.

Thirty-seven artists with featured songs include Paul McCartney and Joni Mitchell — the first two to sign on with Starbucks' Hear Music label — along with Joss Stone, Dave Matthews, John Mayer, Annie Lennox and Band of Horses.

The first song will be Bob Dylan's "Joker Man."

Also on Oct. 2, Starbucks will start selling iTunes digital release cards that allow a full album of music and bonus material to be downloaded online. KT Tunstall's "Drastic Fantastic" and the soundtrack to the film "Into the Wild" with new music from Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder will be the first two featured albums, retailing for $14.99 and $11.99, respectively.

How to: 8 Ways to Get Ringtones Onto Your iPhone For Free

Purchasable iPhone Ringtones are officially here. However, with the discovery of free iPhone ringtones from inside iTunes 7.4 (and the rediscovery of them in iTunes 7.4.1), most of you won't want to pay $0.99 for the privilege of using a 30-second version of a song you've already purchased. Here are eight alternative ways to get ringtones onto your iPhone.

Options that require Jailbreak

• SSH/File Transfer: All you have to do is drop an iPhone's iPod-compatible ringtone into the /Library/Ringtones directory, meaning you can use MP3s, AACs (protected and unprotected), or M4As. Anything that your iPhone's iPod supports will work.
• iBrickr (Windows): iBrickr actually transcodes your sound files for you, so if you're looking up old WAV sound pages from 1999, iBrickr can convert them into something that the iPhone understands before syncing. [iBrickr]
• iFuntastic (Mac): Same as the SSH/File Transfer option. Just drag them into the correct /Library/Ringtones folder. [iFuntastic]
• Sendsong: Allows you to pick any song from your iPod and move it into the Ringtones section. Install this with AppTapp.

Options that don't require Jailbreak

• iTunes Music Store: You can manually place AAC files into the correct iTunes Ringtones folder as long as it has the right file extension. Works with purchased iTunes songs or songs you've converted to AAC format. [JoeMaller]
• Rogue Ameoba's MakeiPhoneRingtone (Mac): This takes advantage of the iTunes 7.4 and iTunes 7.4.1 ringtone file compatibility workaround to get the Ringtones show up in iTunes. All you have to do is drop in an AAC file, which can be one of your songs purchased from iTunes. [MakeiPhoneRingtone]
• iToner (Mac): Copies ringtones to your iPhone, bypassing iTunes, should be guaranteed to work with future iPhone updates. Costs $15. [iToner]
• iPhoneRingToneMaker (Windows): Transfers ringtones to your iPhone, but lets you edit them beforehand in its editor so you can chop down long songs to a manageable clip. [efksoft]

We recommend you use one of the free methods, since they're actually quite easy to do. Even if you don't want to jailbreak your phone, the iTunes Music Store manual method and Rogue Amoeba's MakeiPhoneRingtone can take care of this for free. But if you want to make sure your ringtones don't get deleted when a new version of iTunes or iPhone Firmware comes out, you may want to try jailbreaking and placing the songs into the ringtones folder manually.
