There's some interesting developments concerning Apple's App Store

Competitor after competitor have launched their own app stores, but none have been able to come close to matching Apple's industry-leading iTunes App Store, which serves the company's popular iPhone smartphone. The App Store has suffered a bit in the past from controversy, though, with many developers unhappy with Apple's inconsistent approach to application acceptance.

Now, with Apple trying to put that controversy in rear view, a new one is brewing. Recently, there has been a growing user outcry, particularly in the influential business user segment, over Apple's no-refunds policy concerning App Store downloads.

With some apps like GPS applications or business applications coming in at $30, $50, or even more, users are becoming furious when these pricey apps occasionally fail or prove to be bug prone. With no returns, these users are out of luck, with Apple leaving them no recourse. Apple's policy explicitly states -- refunds will only be offered if the download fails.

These complaints have been given a prominent voice by a recent piece from Eric A. Taub of The New York Times. Mr. Taub writes, "None of this may matter if the most expensive app you’ve downloaded is a 99-cent virtual beer glass. Once the novelty wears off, most people can live with the financial loss. But asking people to spend $100 on an app that they haven’t had the opportunity to try and can’t return may limit its popularity. Even if you don’t return a piece of consumer hardware you purchased, you can always try to sell it to someone else. But an unwanted app remains yours forever."

Why are iPhone Apps Rejected by the App Store? Here is Why...

After rejections, one Apple executive is trying hard to win customers -- and developers -- back

Apple's app store practices have bordered on schizophrenia, with it frequently accepting applications only to later reject them and rejecting others only to later accept them. Worse yet, frequently rejections seem to follow no consistent pattern, with some apps being rejected for containing some sort of forbidden content, while others with that same content get accepted.

These inconsistencies have led to customers growing dissatisfied with the iPhone -- or in some cases even leaving it. They have also led to a growing discontent among developers, some of whom have also jumped ship. And it has even brought down a government investigation concerning Apple's role in rejecting the Google Voice app.

However, there is one man who hopes to fix the system. Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing Phil Schiller is trying to right the iPhone App Store and is personally taking a hand in trying to win back customers, developers, and placate government investigators.

Marketing iPhone Apps - The 101 Way!

Since two people I know are now professional iPhone developers, I’ve taken a bit of a closer look at the app store, the iPhone and the marketing of your app. There are a few things which I find interesting;

1) Its essentially a walled garden, distribution is exclusively through the app store, so Apple owns the customer contact.

2) First mover advantage was important. If you could get there first with an OK app in front of many rabid Mac fans you were guaranteed of making some money.

3) There is a real problem with the pricing model (if you’re a developer). in order to get into the top sellers bracket people try to get as many sales as possible, so developers keep their prices real low ($0.99). This is a doubled edged sword that you need to decrease your price to make sales, but then the revenues don’t actually mean much. Unfortunately you have to sell a lot of content in order to keep yourself happy with that.

4) It’s a groundbreaking device; it can tell where you are, connect to the internet, do crazy things associated with motion. This opens up the scope considerably wrt development.

The Graveyard for iPhone Apps

One Mac developer, Peter Hosey, has assembled what he calls is a list of "every application that Apple has killed, along with the reason that they stated for doing so, and what has happened to the app since". The list contains exactly ten entries, including the infamous "i am rich" app. Its hard to imagine that only ten apps have been denied from the AppStore, but the list is worth perusing...

Lightning Review: iPhone Tetris App

The App: Tetris with excellent touch implementation. In a matter of seconds anyone will be comfortably rotating, placing and flicking blocks around the screen, and the block placement preview is a welcome addition.

The Price: $9.99

The Verdict: Tetris isn't exactly the most ambitious project for a company like EA Games. That's probably why the company's iPhone port is just, well, overdone. A good Tetris implementation - one that would have been wildly successful on its own - wasn't enough for EA, who've loaded this port up with so much crap that it sometimes doesn't even run. EA obviously wanted to use a bit of the iPhone's rendering capabilities, but the graphics are gaudy to the point of distraction. Starting or resuming a basic game takes quite a while because of the layers of menus and loading screens, and the secondary gameplay modes and Magic Mode tools will be ignored by most. On our 3G iPhone, the app would often freeze at startup, a problem that has been reported elsewhere among iPhone and iPod owners. An update is forthcoming that should address stability issues as well as introduce a feature that allows you to draw your upcoming shape directly.

These inspired features, though, are sullied by the showy, buggy execution. Anyone looking for a simple, clean port like Tris (from the jailbreak days. See you soon, Tris...) should probably pass on this $9.99 monster as you can expect a decent competitor to pop up at a lower price point, if not for free. Also, there are already web apps that offer a traditional (though gestureless) Tetris experience in your browser that don't have a 40 second startup time. One more sticky point: if you exit out of the game to check email or take a call and return, it will save your game state. But to start playing again you have to sit through 10 seconds of the intro movie. Freaking annoying and a waste of battery.

Top Free iPhone Apps Generate About 80,000 Downloads a Day

Illusion Labs, the makers of the popular free application Labyrinth Lite [App Store], was profiled in BusinessWeek. Illusion Labs started off as a developer for jailbroken iPhones and has since made the transition to the App Store.

Their free version of Labyrinth recently hit the number one spot in the App Store's most downloaded and has since settled at fifth place. Illusion Labs reveals that this level of popularity translates into approximately 80,000 downloads a day.

The company uses the free application as a 10-level demo version of their $5.99 full version [App Store]. The developers were also responsible for a popular free game called iPint which was commissioned by ad agency Beattie McGuiness Bungary for Carling beer. (The iPint application is currently unavailable in the U.S. App Store)

Secret URL May Allow Apple to Delete Your iPhone Apps Remotely

It's supposed to be your "life in your pocket," not Apple's. But a piece of code discovered in the iPhone operating system might keep you under Apple's control.

Jonathan Zdrianski, author of the book iPhone Open Application Development, discovered a URL hidden in iPhone's CoreLocation that he believes the iPhone uses to check whether any apps on your phone match with those listed in a database of blacklisted applications. Presumably, that would allow Apple to remotely de-authorize those apps, or perhaps even delete them.

"This suggests that the iPhone calls home once in a while to find out what applications it should turn off," Zdrianski wrote. "At the moment, no apps have been blacklisted, but by all appearances, this has been added to disable applications that the user has already downloaded and paid for, if Apple so chooses to shut it down."

Hum. So then all of those who got away with NetShare before it disappeared from the App Store aren't so safe/lucky after all.

Now, if Apple were more organized with regard to what appears and disappears from the App Store, they probably wouldn't need this emergency procedure. What's the point of an approval process if the useless, $1,000 "I Am Rich" app is going to make it out the door, only to be yanked immediately afterward?

Worthless, $1000 "I Am Rich" iPhone App Disappears (AAPL)

The $1000, zero-utility "I Am Rich" app for Apple's (AAPL) iPhone and iPod touch has been removed from the iTunes App Store.

It no longer appears in searches, coder Armin Heinrich's list of apps, or the most-recent apps list.

We don't know if Apple removed it or if Armin did -- either is plausible -- but we'll update if we find out.

While we're asking: Did anyone buy it?

UPDATE: This isn't the only app to disappear from iTunes after a short stay - by our count there are 5, so far.

Over 1,000 iPhone Free Apps (and some paid)

Well, it looks like the iTunes App Store is off to a rip-roaring start. More than 1,000 unique applications have been uploaded. But what’s even more impressive is the download stats.

Since the store’s open, over 25 million apps have been downloaded. This not only is a good sign for the success of the App Store–it’s also a good sign that this may just be a great means of selling mobile software for consumers and businesses alike.

Because many apps are currently free and the vast majority–around 90%–are priced under $10, this isn’t a huge market yet. But it certainly has the potential to be so and I would set my watch that it will be so, soon.

MagicPad Editor Offers Copy and Paste

AppleiPhoneApps.com posts a video of an upcoming text editor called MagicPad that implements its own Copy and Paste functionality.

The solution appears relatively elegant, but does appear to change some of the natural functionality of the magnifying glass. Normally, if you want to position the cursor in the proper location, you press and drag to position the cursor.

MagicPad has modified this functionality so that press and drag will invoke text selection. In order to position the cursor properly, you can still drag your finger to the right spot, but then simply need to tap again to start the selection. The embedded video shows out it works:



Of course, the copy/paste functionality only works within MagicPad itself.

The Best Free iPhone Apps

If you’ve got an iPhone sporting the new 2.0 firmware, chances are you have Super Monkey Ball. (And if you haven’t, what are you waiting for?) But there’s more goodness to be culled from the iTunes app store besides playing games. There are plenty of cool apps out there, and some of the best ones don’t cost a penny. After all, when you spend a big chunk of your disposable income on limited-edition video games, free and useful stuff is a godsend.

Here are a few that are worth checking out:

PhoneSaber: Yes, it is what you think. And even though waving your iPhone like you’re Darth Maul won’t score you a date, it will make your fellow Star Wars fans a little jealous.

Facebook: This app delivers almost all the functionality of the regular site in the iPhone. The best part: You can snap photos and directly upload them to your profile. The chat feature comes in handy at the grocery checkout when two people in front of you are paying with personal checks.

Shazam: While you’re waiting in that grocery aisle and hear that one song by that one band whose front man left and then collaborated with that other band, Shazam can listen to it and, provided that it’s loud enough and there isn’t too much ambient noise, identify that song for you. And sometimes it will let you look up and purchase that song on iTunes or provide a link to a YouTube video of the song. Shazam comes in handy at wedding receptions. And it’s a great conversation starter when you want to chat it up with a cute bridesmaid.

Twitterrific: A clean user interface, along with being able to post photos, makes Twittering less cumbersome and even more addictive.

Urbanspoon: If you’re the indecisive type when it comes to eating out, Urbanspoon will randomly select a neighborhood, cuisine and price range, based on your current location. It works like a slot machine, so if you disagree with the recommendation, just shake the iPhone for another one.

Remote: Control your iTunes library or your Apple TV with your iPhone. A great replacement to the standard-issue Apple remote that has the uncanny ability to get lost between the sofa cushions.

Pandora: If you’re not familiar with Pandora, now is the time to get acquainted with it. Search for a band or song, and Pandora will try to put together a playlist of similar songs or artists. What’s great is that it works over EDGE if you have the older iPhone, so you can discover your new favorite band during your commute. Also available is AOL Radio, but it works only over Wi-Fi.

Free iPhone App Turns Your Friends into Joker

Waiting in line for the Dark Knight? Here's something to help pass the time if you have an iPhone: The free HaHaHa app.

Snap a photo of your friend and you can smear Joker makeup all over his face. Hahaha -- sucker.

What'll really pass the time is the sheer difficulty of using this app: Mess up applying Joker makeup once and you have to start all over again. The e-mailing portion of the app isn't integrated with iPhone's Mail, and it's a real pain to use (requiring you to fill out your name and e-mail address as well as your friends').

I'm not sure how much Heath Ledger fans will appreciate this app. I guess this is Warner Bros' way of cherishing his memory.

The 7 Best Free iPhone Apps

The iPhone 3G was released just a few days ago and one of the coolest things to come with it is the iPhone Apps Store. Already there are hundreds of Apps to choose from, and I have been browsing through many of them to find the best picks. Here are what I consider the best 7 Apps for the iPhone available through the Apps Store. (as of 6/14/2008)

Holy Bible

This App grabs Bible text from youversion.com. You get access to 16 different translations with full search capability. You can also use a daily reading function to help you read through the Bible in a year and contribute notes to the youversion.com community. This is an excellent Bible Study tool and is much handier than carrying around a bound Bible wherever you go.

Facebook

The Facebook App allows you to see your Facebook inbox, and see any status changes any of your friends have made. Most of my friends tend to update things on Facebook regularly so I find this App extremely helpful in keeping up with what and how they are doing. It is nice to not have to jump onto a computer to gather this information.

Mobile Banking

If you use Bank of America then this App is perfect. You can access your Bank of America bank account, transfer funds, and even see where the closest ATM machine is to your current location. I am always looking for a Bank of America ATM, so this little App is especially handy. So, if you have ever wondered how much money is left in your bank account after having to send more money to AT&T to use your iPhone, the Mobile Banking App is there to help you out.

SpeechCloud Voice Dialer

A phone I used to have a long…long…. time ago had voice dialing. And I loved it. This was something I was surprised to see was missing with the new iPhone. But along comes SpeechCloud to save the day. With this little gem you can press a big green button and say the name of one of your contacts and it will call them. This is much safer than trying to scroll through your contacts while you are driving, even though I know none of us ever do that….

AIM

AOL Instant Messenger isn’t my favorite IM service, but this is the best IM application currently available in the Apps Store. It does an excellent job too, my only complaint is that it isn’t active when you are on another screen, so it isn’t practical to be ‘always on’ and receive IM messages whenever they come in. But it makes the list because it is currently the only IM client you can get.

Twitterific

Twitter is a social utility that allows people to share short messages. I have been using Twitter for the past year and actually wish more of my friends used it. Twitterific is a great tool to connect you to see all of your friends latest Twitters and even make your own. You even get a nice Twitter sound when one comes in. (this only work when the application is active though, just like AIM) - I actually update Twitter via Ping.fm, so if you want an invite to ping.fm just let me know in the comments and I can see what I can do.

Pandora

I believe that this App is tons better than AOL Radio. With Pandora you tell it an Artist that you enjoy listening to, and it creates a ’station’ that will play music that you will also likely enjoy. In the App you can give a song a thumbs up or a thumbs down so Pandora can learn more about your musical tastes. This App works great on the 3G network and gives you access to a ton of music, it truly is amazing.

17 Free iPhone Apps You Need Right Now

We take a fast look at new iPhone applications that let you drink beer virtually, interact with music in cool ways, and even do some useful things.

Everybody who knows about the new iPhone applications knows about Super Monkey Ball and MLB At Bat. But after dropping all kinds of dough on a new iPhone and a 3G service plan, you can save some cash and get these great free programs ASAP.

Note: We tested all of these apps on a first-generation iPhone with the 2.0 software installed, so data uploaded and downloaded at EDGE speeds. You'll also notice that this list is short on location-based apps such as Loopt and Whrrl. That doesn't mean they're bad--it's just that the reviewer values privacy and finds them a little creepy.

If you're comfortable with having everyone know where you are at all times, go ahead and try those apps out, too. Here, though, are my first favorites.

AirMe and Exposure

One of a few Flickr front-ends for the iPhone, AirMe outdoes Exposure (another free iPhone app for Flickr) by allowing you to upload pics directly from your iPhone to your Flickr account. Results are instantaneous: You snap a pic with your iPhone camera, AirMe geotags it (if you want it to), and it's on your Flickr page within a minute. On the other side of the fence, Exposure lets you browse your Flickr photosets, see photos that have been taken close to your current location (again, if you want it to), and basically presents a iPhone-friendly front end to Flickr. It did crash a few times during testing, however.

Top 10 Best iPhone 3g Apps!

After finally getting my iPhone 3G yesterday I spent most of my time playing with the Apps and App Store.

It’s early days but there already some amazing Apps available for the iPhone. This list features a wide range including task management, social networking, file transferring, location aware fun and even games.

1. FileMagnet (£2.99)

File MagnetFileMagnet is the app that Apple forgot. I’ve no idea why Apple does not allow access to transfer files too and from the iPhone. What’s the point in carrying around a 16gb hard drive with us everyday if we can’t use it for anything but music, video and photos?

Portable Storage Device

File MagnetOnce you have installed FileMagnet on both your iPhone and your Mac you can drag and drop any files into it to sync between the devices. Making your iPhone a 16gb portable storage device.

Open & View Files Too!

It then goes one step better and not only allows you to transfer and store files but also lets you open and view them on your iPhone!! It supports PDFs, Microsoft Office documents, images, movies and even complete folders!

Rating: 10/10 (The best iPhone app so far. It has no faults and is a bargain)

2. Shazam (FREE)

This app really blew my mind when I first tried it!
File Magnet

You hold your iPhone to any source of music, be it TV, radio or whatever. Shazam ‘listens to it’ and identifies it for you in seconds!! That is it’s most obvious feature but it actually does so much more.

It works with tags and comparing the tags you make to it’s databases. You can then buy the music you hear. Imagine you are in a pub playing a track you like but don’t know. Hold up your iPhone, let Shazam identify it and then purchase it automatically! Amazing!

Additional features include viewing related videos on YouTube, personalising Tags with photos and emailing Tags to contacts.

Rating: 10/10 (Another perfect app. Technology ahead of it’s time!)

3. Vicinity (£1.79)

File MagnetVicinity is another app which takes advantage of the iPhones GPS and location awareness.

Using your current location it quickly provides lists of nearby services such as banks, pubs, restaurants, taxis and takeaways, giving their distance from you as well!

Not amazingly useful when your in your home town but could be invaluable when traveling to new places.

Another interesting feature is bringing up Flickr photographs taken in the vicinity and also Wikipedia pages of local interests.

Rating: 7/10 (Works well and a good insight into how GPS is more useful than just maps.)

4. Things (£5.99)

File MagnetThings is one of my most used programs on all of my Macs. It’s a task management system which can implement David Allen’s GTD system. I really would be lost without it. The idea of having my To-Do lists with me on my iPhone at all times is very exciting.

Coming Soon…

Unfortunately there is one major downside at the moment. The App does not yet support syncing which makes it almost useless as I won’t write my lists out twice. However, the creators insist that it’s their top priority and it will be implemented soon. The introductory price of just $9.99/£5.99 makes it worth an early investment.

Rating: 8/10 (Rating assumes syncing is implemented. A stunning app and a bargain too)

5. OmniFocus (£11.99)

Before Things came along OmniFocus was my task management app of choice. I’m still not 100% converted to Things and there are bits of OmniFocus which appeals to me also.

Amazing Location Awareness

The iPhone App of OmniFocus is streets ahead at the moment with one amazing feature. The location awareness of the iPhone is implemented so well in this app.

For example using your location OmniFocus can create custom lists to show you tasks you need to complete nearby. Maybe you have a separate list for at the office? Or a shopping list which can be shows as you approach the store!

It’s not cheap though, it’s twice the price of Things and the OSX desktop app is also expensive.

6. Twitterific (FREE)

File MagnetTwitter is the marmite of social networking. You either love it or hate it. Personally I love it.

I also love Twitterific for OSX, the iPhone version is every bit as good! If you use OSX and Twitter you probably already use Twitterific. If you use Windows now is your chance to see what you’ve been missing!

Rating: 7/10 (If you Twitter you will love it.)

7. NetNewsWire (FREE)

File MagnetNetNewsWire is my RSS reader of choice for the Mac. I like Google Reader NNW is just so much more polished and has some nice features such as posting to del.icio.us.

I use quite a few different Macs and read my RSS feeds on all of them. NNWs built in syncing works great and i’m so happy that I can read the same feeds on my iPhone now and keep them all in sync.

Rating: 8/10 (Every bit as good as the desktop app)

8. Remote (FREE)

Remote is a very simple but quite useful app. It allows you to control the music on your computer or Apple TV with your iPhone over a Wi-Fi network.

You can play, pause, skip, shuffle music from your whole iTunes library as well as viewing album artwork and searching.

Rating: 6/10 (Not as exciting as most of the other apps but it’s free and useful)

9. Super Monkeyball (£5.99)

Super Monkey BallApparnatly Super Monkeyball is quite a famous game. Personally I have never played it before though. It’s by SEGA and is obviously a quality game.

The object of the game is to navigate through a variety of obstacle courses against the clock. Of course they get progressively harder and there are 5 worlds and 110 stages!

PSP Rival?

I was very impressed by how good it looked and sounded. It really does give the iPhone the potential to be a rival for the PSP and NintendoDS if more game manufactures take it seriously.

Of course the iPhone would be limited by it’s lack of buttons but DS style games would work well with the touch screen and others including Super MonkeyBall utilise the accelerometer amazingly effectively. (You tilt and turn the iPhone and the ball on the screen moves accordingly)

Rating Me: 8/10 (A seriously impressive game, wouldn’t be out of place on a PSP)

10. Cube Runner (FREE)

Cube Runner is another game which using the iPhones built-in accelerometer. It’s not as pollished and professional as Super MonkeyBall but it is every bit as addictive and it’s also free!

You basically tilt the iPhone to control a spaceship which you fly across Star Wars type landscapes avoiding cubes which get in your way.

Rating: 7/10 (Less impressive than Super MonkeyBall but is addictive, fun and free!)

So there we have it. Obviously the app store has only been open for 2 days so things are very likely to change as this post gets older.
