Security is a lot like combating illness -- sometimes you have a relatively minor issue that affects many people, other times you have a major issue that only affects a few. AT&T's iPad email leak and its ramifications were bad enough, but AT&T's latest breach appears to be even worse.

This morning the iPhone 4 preorder process was having some serious denial of service issues thanks to a deluge of customers looking to order the hot new phone from Apple. But AT&T's servers didn't just deny service to some -- they also apparently started doing some naughty things as well.

Several customers have written reporting that they logged in to their AT&T accounts, only to enter another user's account. Full information, including bills, phone numbers, possible credit card information, addresses, and more greeted them according to growing reports over at Gizmodo.

This nightmarish scenario, appears only to be affecting a few of AT&T's subscribers, but for those impacted it could lead to some very serious problems, should the info fall into the hands of someone who might be tempted to abuse it.

FCC complaints on original ban likely helped the change come about

AT&T's network woes since the iPhone launched have become legendary with the company unable to support the bandwidth that is being consumed by iPhone users. The poor performance of the AT&T network has led to bad press for the mobile provider and a number of attacks from U.S. mobile wireless market leader Verizon.

To keep the load on its network at a lower level, AT&T has a long history of banning applications that could consume significant bandwidth when used. AT&T banned 3G streaming when using the SlingPlayer app back in May of 2009 on the iPhone despite the fact that other handsets on the AT&T network were allowed to use the SlingPlayer with 3G. AT&T also originally banned VoIP apps from being used over its 3G network only to lift that ban on with the unveiling of the new iPhone/iPad SDK in January 2010.

Using Too Much "Unlimited" Data? AT&T May Fine You!

"Keep in line and don't get a fine" -- may be AT&T's new order of business in order to try to keep its network afloat

It's no secret that AT&T's network leaves something to be desired. AT&T admits that geographic coverage is poor, but insists that 75 percent of customers have "access" to 3G coverage.

However, in certain cities the situation is reportedly particularly dire, with an Apple store in New York City reporting 30 percent dropped call rates to be the norm. As DailyTech's Shane McGlaun comments in a recent blog about AT&T's initiative to roll out an app to identify regions of poor coverage: "All I can say is that I hope AT&T has a server with lots of storage space because near as I can tell the service sucks everywhere."

Now AT&T may be resorting to a new plan to try to stretch its struggling 3G network -- fining iPhone users that use too much data. Wait, isn't part of the iPhone data plan access to unlimited data transfer? Yes, that is the case, but it turns out that AT&T is considering plans to make "unlimited" mean "don't use too much or we'll fine you".

The issue was plans were let slip by AT&T executive Ralph de la Vega at the UBS conference in New York. He complained that 3 percent of the iPhone users are using 40 percent of the bandwidth. He complains that these bandwidth hogs are feasting on such forbidden fruit as streaming music and video and that his network just can't keep up.

AT&T Opens iPhone to 3G VoIP Traffic, President of Skype Responds

When it comes to VoIP on the iPhone, both Apple and AT&T have been quite restrictive with regards to what is made available to customers. Customers wishing to use VoIP programs like Skype on the iPhone have been relegated to using Wi-Fi instead of streaming data over AT&T's already fragile 3G network.

Perhaps the biggest battle came with the rejection of Google Voice. Apple flatly rejected the application citing that it would cause confusion with the existing phone features on the iPhone. Many people, however, believed that the snub came down directly from AT&T.

The block of cellular VoIP on the iPhone infuriated many considering that Blackberry devices running on AT&T networks have had access to such applications (including Google Voice). AT&T today even acknowledged the artificial iPhone blocks; "For some time, AT&T has offered a variety of other wireless devices that enable VoIP applications on 3G, 2G and Wi-Fi networks."

Google Voice iPhone App Breaks the Law, AT&T Launches iPhone MMS

The excitement of the iPhone finally getting multimedia messaging, is overshadowed by the Google Voice drama

After a long wait AT&T finally rolled out support for the multimedia messaging service (MMS) protocol. This means that iPhones can at last send pictures, video, and audio recordings like users of other smartphones.

IPhones have actually had MMS support built in since June when the iPhone OS v3.0 was released. AT&T, however, kept the functionality disabled for fear it would overload and break its network. Meanwhile, AT&T upgraded much of its network and built extra capacity to handle the service.

On September 22, early last week, it sent a free SMS text message to inform its customers that it would be rolling out the update on Friday. The message read, "AT&T Free Msg: Picture & video messaging (MMS) will be available for iPhone on 9/25. While we prepare your account for MMS capability, the current 'view my message' experience will be turned off but your ability to send and receive text messages will not be affected."

Users began receiving the update when they synced their phones with iTunes on Friday. The update wasn't without its problems -- most of which appear to be software/firmware related. Some users found that their attempts to send MMS failed. Apple and AT&T suggested users first try to reset their networks settings. A more extreme fix involves selecting your iPhone's settings in iTunes and choosing "General > Reset All Settings > enter your pin if prompted". That fix appears to get MMS working, but you may have to reenter your Passcode, Wi-Fi passwords. You may also lose your VPN connections and remembered Wi-Fi networks. A perk, though, is that your apps are arranged alphabetically, something previously not easily done.

iPhone Finally Gets MMS on September 25

AT&T finally gives MMS to its iPhone customers, though missing its target of a "summer" launch

AT&T promised early this year to have MMS ready for the iPhone during the summer. After all, it didn't seem like that was too tall an order considering its other phones offered MMS and the iPhone OS v3.0 came with built-in support for MMS.
Now AT&T has finally announced an official date -- September 25. AT&T will roll out the update to iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S phones, which will allow them to send video clips and pictures in text messages. The MMS capabilities will be offered for free as part of the existing service bundle.

AT&T says the tardiness was necessary to "to give our customers a positive experience from day one." AT&T adds, "[We needed] to make sure our network is ready to handle what we expect will be a record volume of MMS traffic."

The company says that another OS-supported feature that is highly anticipated -- tethering -- is coming soon but that there is "no set date". AT&T says it "expect[s] to offer it in the future", but says it can't yet, describing, "This function could exponentially increase traffic on the network, and we need to ensure that some of our current upgrades are in place before we can deliver the expanded functionality with the excellent performance that customers expect."

AT&T and iPhone -- Exclusivity Might End Soon

AT&T CEO says end of partnership is inevitable

No one can deny the business sense that AT&T used when it locked up the iPhone from Apple as an exclusive back in 2007 when the phone first debuted. The iPhone has helped AT&T grow significantly since it debuted.

According to AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, the partnership with Apple will inevitably end and ultimately the only differentiator between the wireless providers in America will be network quality. The exclusive agreement between Apple and AT&T is believed to end next year.

In Europe, O2 is facing the same problem as AT&T with its exclusive period ending. Apple is allowing O2 to keep the exclusive on the iPhone 3GS in the UK while opening the iPhone 3G up to other carriers. Reuters reports that AT&T added 1.4 million new subscribers in the second quarter and out of those subscribers about had more than 2.4 million iPhone activation during the quarter.

The prospect of losing the exclusive on the iPhone has to raise eyebrows at AT&T and with Wall Street. Research firm Pali Research issued a sell advisement on AT&T stock in June because it was believed to be losing its iPhone exclusive. At the same time, the research firm issued a buy order on Verizon, believed to be picking the iPhone up on its network.

Pali Research wrote in a report, "Our buy rating on Verizon is based on our view that its market share gains will lead to profit growth that tops other telecom companies and Wall Street consensus estimates. Our sell rating on AT&T is based primarily on our belief that its wireless business will enter a prolonged period of erosion after being propped up by the iPhone for the past two years."

Would you pay $9.99 a month for AT&T's GPS service iPhone App?

AT&T sent out a message yesterday to its subscribers touting its new voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation service, operated by TeleNav.

For "just $9.99 a month," the message said, subscribers can "get there faster, safer and without any hassles."

Turns out the monthly fee is a hassle to some. True, AT&T is simply the conduit for the underlying service from TeleNav in Sunnyvale, Calif. But the carrier still is getting some grief from consumers. One reviewer at ComputerWorld argued that the "free" iPhone app was a "Trojan horse into your wallet." (It's free to install but costs $9.99 a month to use.)

The broader question is whether consumers, who have grown used to free or very inexpensive apps that do a dizzying array of high-tech tasks, will still go for a subscription model. For AT&T and TeleNav, their competitors are TomTom, which showed off its turn-by-turn app last month at the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference but has yet to announce a pricing structure, and Google Maps, which provides directions for free but doesn't have some of the bells and whistles of TeleNav. There are also the traditional GPS devices, which cost as little as $99.99, no monthly fee required.

Easy iPhone Tethering for AT&T users

If your iPhone is running 3.0, it’s very easy to enable internet tethering on AT&T’s network with no ugly hacks. First you’ll need to download this carrier settings file from gizmodo.

Next, quit iTunes and enter the following command in terminal:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

Contrary to many articles, you don’t need to install a pre-release version of iTunes.

When you restart iTunes, connect your iPhone and you’ll be able to option-click the Restore button to choose the .ipcc file in that disk image. Rather than doing a full restore of your iPhone, it will simply update the carrier settings. If the update is successful, the Network page under general settings will show an Internet Tethering option.

Free iPhone? Not Soon, Maybe Someday

When Apple (AAPL) cut the iPhone's price to $199 from $399, sales doubled. Now at $99, the 8 GB iPhone 3G costs one-sixth the price of the first 8 GB iPhone, and Wall Street expects another sales uptick. So why don't AT&T and Apple just cut the price down to $0?

That's the idea that TheStreet.com's Scott Moritz floats: "...Within hours of Apple's announcement Monday that it was cutting the price of the old iPhone by half to $99, speculation arose that AT&T would eventually cut the price to $0."

Well, sure, maybe someday. Eventually, every cellphone that stays on the market long enough winds up free (or close to it) after subsidy.

But given the iPhone's wholesale price that AT&T pays -- probably $400 or more -- and Apple's image as a premium brand, it doesn't seem like something either company is in a hurry to offer. The $99 iPhone also serves as a lure for the new $199/299 iPhone 3G S, which both companies want to sell. But it'll be hard to upsell people to $200 from $0.

What Would a Free iPhone Do for Sales?

How much difference will dropping the price of an iPhone from $199 to $99 make in Apple’s sales?

If you are being rational, it shouldn’t make that much of a difference, given that the $30 per month data plan costs $720 over two years. In other words the $100 price cut only reflects an 11 percent reduction in the total cost.

But since when were people rational? A year ago, Apple dropped the upfront cost of an iPhone from $399 to $199, but AT&T increased the monthly data plan’s cost by $10 a month (leading to a net increase in cost of $40 over two years.) The result: sales in the United States doubled, according to an analysis by Gene Munster, the analyst at Piper Jaffray. (There’s more to the increase of sales of course. The second generation iPhone was much faster and the App Store has been creating lots of new reasons for people to buy an iPhone.)

Mr. Munster continues to believe that this year’s price cut will help drive iPhone sales even higher. Indeed, he predicts that Apple will sell more of last year’s 3G phones at $99 than it will this year’s 3GS models, which are faster and have video recording capability, at $199 and $299. (I know you, Bits readers are early adopters and would likely spend the extra $100 if you were in an iPhone-buying mood, but not everyone takes gadgets as seriously as you do.)

“Ninety nine dollars is a magic price point,” he said. That’s on the low side for top-tier smart phones. AT&T is currently selling a refurbished Blackberry Curve at that price, and Verizon has the aging Palm Centro at $49.

Apple is also throwing a sharp elbow at Palm, Google and anyone else that might be tempted to compete with Apple by undercutting the iPhone’s price.

How do I connect to free AT&T iPhone Wi-Fi?

For those with iPhone contracts, AT&T offers free iPhone Wi-Fi at hotspots on their network. There are thousands of AT&T wireless Wi-Fi locations nationwide. Connecting is easy and will incur no charges on your wireless bill.

Start by searching for a local AT&T hotspot, or entering your local Starbucks (most locations provide AT&T Wi-Fi access). You can find a map of available AT&T Wi-Fi locations on the AT&T website.

"Badass" Hulu App Coming to iPhone

Free mobile video will soon be at iPhone owners' fingertips

The iPhone is about to get a little cooler.  Hot off taking the internet world by storm, internet site Hulu, which offers commercial-supported streaming TV from Fox and NBC, is set to make the jump to mobile deviceswith a new iPhone app.  The new app is set to transform your iPhone into a pocket TV.

The news first leaked to Alley Insider, which spoke with a "plugged-in industry executive" who confirmed the development of the app.  The executive said the app will land in only a few months, will support both Wi-Fi and 3G connections and be, in their words, "badass."

The app is not without its competition -- there's already a CBS TV.com app, a Joost app (MTV, BET, Paramount Pictures, and NASCAR) and an i.TV app.  However, with Hulu being the most popular and effective online solution and new reports that it is on the verge of a deal with ABC/Disney, it should take the iPhone world by storm.

Apple and AT&T likely were somewhat reticent to approve the application, which would be in direct competition with Apple's iTunes video store.  However, given the increase in iPhone sales that legitimate mobile TV can bring, their hands were virtually tied.  There's no word yet on whether Hulu will share ad revenue with Apple and/or AT&T, but that seems possible.

AT&T in Discussion with Apple to Extend Deal to be Exclusive Carrier of iPhone?

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Randall Stephenson, AT&T’s CEO, is in discussion with Apple to extend the lucrative deal to be the exclusive carrier of iPhone in US.

It's speculated that the current deal is expected to expire next year (2010) though reports back in 2007 had suggested that AT&T had cracked an exclusive deal for 5-years.

Wall Street Journal is reporting:

"But AT&T's exclusive deal to carry the iPhone in the U.S. expires next year, according to people familiar with the matter, and Mr. Stephenson is now in discussions with Apple Inc. to get an extension until 2011."

AT&T had added whopping 4.3 million iPhone subscribers in the second half of 2008; of which about 40% were new customers. So if the exclusive deal with Apple is indeed expected to expire next year then I'm not surprised that AT&T is looking to extend it further.

iPhone contract might be extended to 2011

Apple and AT&T are working together to try and extend the iPhone contract

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson is currently negotiating with Apple to try and keep a longer hold on the popular iPhone until at least 2011, a Wall Street Journal article reports.

If an extension isn't agreed upon by both companies, then the current contract will expire in 2010. The iPhone has sold more than 17 million units since launching in June 2007, and has been exclusively available with AT&T only.

The possible ramifications of a contract extension are unknown, though consumers unable -- or unwilling -- to switch to AT&T have long wanted a shot at the iPhone. Furthermore, many people already unlock their iPhones, and Apple could open the doors to new iPhone owners if the company leaves behind AT&T.

Free iPhone OS v3.0 Tethering Revealed, Still Requires Carrier Approval

The new iPhone OS brings the possibility of tethering if carriers approve it

With the official announcement of the iPhone OS v3.0 there has been much excitement over the new features, which include MMS support, copy cut and paste, turn-by-turn directions (via third-party hardware), FM radio support (via third-party hardware), and new Bluetooth support.  One feature that didn't receive much attention was tethering.

Apple said at the press event for the new OS that it would be allowing tethering and has built the functionality into the new OS.  However, whether or not you can use this functionality is entirely dependent on whether your carrier chooses to support it, and thus far AT&T, the official iPhone carrier in the U.S., has announced no plans to do so.

Still, those interested in how the tethering will work will take interest in this news.  Irish programmer Steve Troughton, an iPhone hacker and OS v3.0 beta tester, became the first to see the new tethering features.  He accidentally unlocked the features when overwriting his carrier, O2's, Carrier Settings file.

The result was an options screen for a tethered connection.  The connection could be turned on by either connecting via USB or Bluetooth and then sliding the a slide bar to "on".  When tethered the phone displays a message beneath the clock -- "Internet Tethering" -- to remind the user that their phone is tethered and is consuming data.

AT&T confirms contract-free iPhone 3G

After a nine-month wait, AT&T says that it will definitely offer iPhones without a contract, according to a spokesperson for the company. They're still locked to AT&T, but at least you won't have to commit to two years of AT&T punishment love-ins.

Earlier today, we told you about unconfirmed evidence that AT&T planned to offer iPhones without a contract. AT&T spokesperson Michael Coe has now confirmed in a statement to the AP that "no-commit" iPhones will go on sale next Thursday, March 26.

As rumored, the 8GB iPhone 3G will sell for $599 and the 16GB iPhone 3G will sell for $699. So now you know: AT&T is subsidizing $400 of the cost of the iPhone if you're willing to commit to two years of service.

AT&T said it would probably offer a contract-free option for the iPhone after the initial July launch frenzy settled down. That was nine months ago, for those of you keeping score. Further, the "no-commit" option is limited to one per customer per active line, and they are still locked to AT&T. Still, for those who don't want to be saddled with two years of service, you now have another option.

AT&T, Apple Agree to Limited U.S. Sales of Unlocked iPhones

Unlocking is okay, says AT&T, but only if you're an existing AT&T customer

Apple and AT&T have fought long and hard against iPhone unlockers in the U.S.  While some foreign countries have mandated Apple sell unlocked iPhones, in the U.S. such phones are still not available. 

According to a Boy Genius Report scoop, that could soon change.  The site claims to have obtained slides from an internal AT&T training presentation that indicate that Apple and AT&T will offer unlocked, contract-free iPhone 3Gs to existing AT&T customers starting March 26.  The 8 GB model would be priced at $599, while the 16 GB would be priced at $699.  

The phones would require no service agreement or activation and could work on other networks.  Again, the "No-Commit" pricing option would be limited to only existing AT&T customers, and only one phone would be available per customer.  Thus, it seems that AT&T is trying to silence complaints about strong-arm tactics when it comes to unlocking, while keeping the sales of unlocked iPhones very limited.

Free iPhone Tethering Options - Get a Free iPhone Modem!

Tethering your iPhone for free used to simply require jailbreaking your phone and installing PDAnet, but JuneCloud got wise and has since have since started charging $30 per year for the software.

But don’t fret, Gizmodo reports that there are at least two free options for tethering. One is iPhoneModem.de the other is iPhoneModem ($10 gets rid of the nags). The piece notes that there’s a third option called 3proxy but that it requires lots of manual configuration.

If you’re gun shy about jailbreaking your iPhone in light of Apple’s insistance that it’s illegal, you’ll have to wait for the rumored official tethering from AT&T. Good luck with that.
