It’s hard to believe that a little device that’s the size of your hand can actually help parents become more organized, time-efficient, knowledgeable, even relaxed. However, that’s the beauty of an iPhone. The key, though, is to find the right apps to get you there, and with so many choices (more than 75,000), it takes time and effort to find good ones.

What follows is a list of 20 free apps that won’t necessarily make you a better parent, but can make your life a little easier, or help out in a pinch wherever you are. And when you have a screaming, bored, hungry, or need-to-use-the-bathroom kid, sometimes a little help is all you need. The apps listed below have been compiled from the eyes of a parent, but many can be used regardless of whether you do or don’t have children.

WebMD Mobile

WebMD’s iPhone app enables parents to look up symptoms and try to figure out what’s ailing their children. Of course, it shouldn’t take the place of professional medical advice, but for those cases when your child has a minor rash, fever, cough, etc., this is a great resource to try and narrow down what is going on, and prepare for a doctor visit if necessary.

Want a Free iPhone From #Squarespace?

As you may have noticed, the top trending topic on Twitter (Twitter reviews) all week has been the hashtag #squarespace. Why? Because the publishing platform of the same name has been running a clever promotion where they market that they are giving away a free iPhone each day, randomly, to one person that appends the hashtag to any of their tweets.

However, there is one issue with this campaign: they aren’t really giving away a free iPhone. If you visit the site for the promotion, you’ll note that down the page, in light grey text, that the prize is actually a “$199 gift certificate to the Apple store, which may be used toward the purchase of an 8GB iPhone.”

Why is this a big deal? Because the only way to get an iPhone for $199 is if you also sign up for new service with AT&T. Otherwise, your $199 gift card will go towards the purchase of an iPhone at full retail price, which can run as high as $699 for existing AT&T customers, as we reported yesterday.

From Apple’s iPhone page: “For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB).”

Now that we’ve seen the rise of social media, and we know we can use the Web to go green, isn’t it about time we find a better way to exchange contact information with each other? We think so.

Thankfully the iPhone has become a platform for utility applications that help us do just that. Each of these applications will help you get your contact info, or that of a friend, off your phone and into someone else’s address book. Best of all, they’re all free. Ain’t that grand?

SnapDat, an application for creating and exchanging multiple business cards via iPhone, works like a charm if you need to save contact information to the iPhone address book with one click. You can also quickly send contact info to a SnapDat user just by inputting their username, or to a non-SnapDat user via email with your vCard.

We really like the fact that SnapDat includes 40 different design templates, lets you use your own logo, offers different layouts, includes embedded social content, and lets you call, text, email, or visit any URL from within the app. This is one pretty nifty free app for business cards.

Assassin - Assassin is essentially T.A.G. - The Assassination Game updated for the 21st century. Instead of using dart guns, you use your iPhone’s camera to hunt your targets, all the while trying to avoid being “assassinated” by your unknown “killer.” Once you capture your target in a picture, you send it in for approval, and then you inherit their target until you are the last assassin left standing in your area.

CrappyRPG Lite - A role playing game in the traditional hack-and-slash style where you have a fully customizable character with skills and abilities that you can build over time by gaining experience from fighting enemies. The Lite version allows you to play up to the ninth level, while the full version has 29 levels in total.

12 Great Free Games for the iPhone and iPod Touch

Why should you put a dent in your wallet when there are so many great free applications out there for the iPhone and iPod IPod Touch? There are tons of games Game reviews for the devices, but the vast majority of them cost money, so we’ve sorted through and located 12 totally free ones for you to throw on your gadgets and entertain yourself throughout the day.

Unlike with Firefox Firefox 3 or WordPress addons, where we always tell you not to load everything we list, there doesn’t seem to be any problem with loading lots of iPhone or iPod Touch apps. Just make sure you have enough memory for the programs and you can easily load all 12 of these on your device.

Originally this list included Tris, but with yesterday’s news that it would be removed we took it off the list. It’s really too bad as it was a great port of the game.

20 Step Plan Emerges to Re-Lock Your iPhone

You have to give it to the iPhone hacking community, they’re an ingenious bunch.

After the thinly veiled threats of yesterday from Apple, the iPhone hacking community is trying to figure out how to safeguard their unlocked phones from the pending firmware update. One forum user over on MacNN has come up with a 20 step plan he feels will work, but he makes no guarantees. About the only thing missing is the use of a rubber band, but I may have missed it

Essentially you have to get the locked files back on your phone, and it involves a lot of file renaming and syncing. The developer of the hacks say it does not appear to break any third-party apps you may have installed, but that could still come in the form of Apple’s update.

So, if you’ve unlocked your phone, and you’re desperate to protect it from a problem that may or may not happen, you should probably at least take a look at the instructions and see if you want to give it a try.
