Panic as Apple iPhone users are attacked by Windows penguins

What do you get if you mix Windows users with an Apple iPhone, stir well using some panicking penguins and decorate with a chunk of spam? The blindingly obvious answer is the latest Trojan attack, of course...

The iPhone itself is not totally immune from malware. Back in January reports circulated confirming the existence of 113 Prep.

This was not, it has to be said, the most cunningly clever bit of malware ever invented. Perhaps because the author, mucking around with some XML files when he built it, was only 11 years old.

Executing the 'malicious' app just reveals it to say 'shoes' and nothing else. Although deleting it does also deleted some files which in turn breaks some applications.

However, now we have the appearance of an iPhone Trojan that does not even run on the iPhone itself. Instead it is aimed squarely at iPhone using Windows users. Actually, let me rephrase that: it is aimed squarely at iPhone using Windows numpties.

After all, why would any intelligent person open an email claiming to be distributing a free iPhone game as an attachment? How stupid do you need to be to play the games a spammer sends you?

Your iPhone Spies on You

So when you hit that home button, or, I imagine, change pages in Safari, it takes a quick snapshot of it so it can do a nice transition, flip it, zoom it, whatever. Then it deletes it. Yeah… the thing is, though, it doesn’t really delete it. It quick-deletes it without overwriting. And if someone has physical access to your phone and a few minutes to hack the firmware, they can get every screenshot that survives.

It’s a serious problem in its possibilities for abuse, but unlikely to affect many. After all, if someone steals your iPhone, they’re probably more interested in pawning it than looking through all the boring stuff you do with it. But since the vulnerability has been demonstrated, it would be nice if Apple could fix it. It would be as easy as having the iPhone zero out the data when has CPU to spare; data recovery is made extremely difficult by doing so and it wouldn’t take more than a couple lines of code.

Apple posts fix for iTunes 8 Windows blue screen of death issue

Apple has posted an updated version of the iTunes 8 installer that purportedly resolves a previously reported issue in which connection of an iPhone or iPod touch to a Windows Vista system results in a blue screen of death (BSOD).

An Apple support note states:

“After installing iTunes 8 for Windows, some users may see a blue screen error message when connecting iPhone or iPod to a Windows Vista computer.”

The fix involves uninstalling Apple Mobile Device Support then reinstalling the updated iTunes 8 package. Not coincidentally, one of our previously published workarounds involved uninstalling Apple Mobile Device Support then reinstalling iTunes 7.7.

IPhone Security Flaw Allows Bypassing of Password

Apple iPhone 3g owners, look out... there's another flaw you need to know about!

Apple has promised to fix an iPhone security flaw that lets people bypass a password designed to protect personal information on a user's phone.

First discovered by MacRumors and confirmed by Gizmodo, the flaw also affects iPod Touch owners. Specifically, users simply tap the "Emergency Call" button on the password-entry screen, and then tap the home button twice.

Doing this will allow the person to have access to a user's favorites and a list of contacts. Clicking on any contact's name will reveal the person's phone number and will have access to the phone function -- i.e. clicking on the e-mail function will let the person send an e-mail to the contact.

While Apple works on an official patch to fix the issue, iPhone or Touch owners can go into the settings and change it so a double click on the home button will go back to the home screen instead of the favorites section.

Huge iPhone Security Flaw Opens All Private Information

There's a huge security problem in the latest iPhone 2.0.2: if you have your JesusPhone password protected, using a very simple trick gives anyone full access to your cellphone private information in Mail, SMS, Contacts, and even Safari. The two-step trick is even simpler to the one used in the past to gain access to the phone to install unlocking cards or jailbreak. Fortunately, there's a way to avoid this obvious security breach until Apple fixes it.

First, password protect your phone and lock it. Then slide to unlock and do this:

1. Tap emergency call.
2. Double tap the home button.

Done. You are now in your favorites. This seems like a feature, because you may want to have emergency number in your favorites for quick dial. The security problem here is double. The first: anyone picking up your phone can make a call to anyone in your favorites. On top of that, this also opens access to your full Address Book, the dial keypad, and your voice mail.

Apple patches 10 iPhone flaws

Apple today released 10 iPhone security updates, including 7 within the MobileSafari browser. The update is available only through iTunes and is not available from the Apple Downloads page. The version users should see within their iPhone after applying this update should be 1.1.1 (3A109a). Further, Apple refuses to discuss pending security vulnerabilities not patched here, stating "For the protection of our customers, Apple does not disclose, discuss, or confirm security issues until a full investigation has occurred and any necessary patches or releases are available."

Bluetooth
This patch affects users of Apple iPhone and addresses the vulnerability in CVE-2007-3753. By sending maliciously crafted Service Discovery Protocol (SDP) packets to an iPhone with Bluetooth enabled, an attacker within range may be able to trigger the issue, which may in turn lead to unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. Apple credits Kevin Mahaffey and John Hering of Flexilis Mobile Security for reporting this vulnerabliity.

Bugs & Fixes: The elusive iPhone Error 1603

There may come a time when your iPhone is so uncooperative—it’s crashing constantly or freezing and you have to press Sleep/Wake and Home for several seconds to bring it back to life—that it needs to be restored. Or you may choose to restore your iPhone when you’ve hacked your phone and then wish to install the latest Apple iPhone update.

There’s the very unlikely possibility that during that restore attempt you’ll see this error message: “The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred. Error 1603.”
