Send free SMS from your iPhone

July 23, 2008 Looking for a way to offset the ridiculously expensive data plan that your new 3G iPhone is tied to? AOL's free AIM client has a feature you might be interested in - the ability to send free SMS messages.

Make sure your iPhone is running the iPhone 2.0 software, and grab AIM here (iTunes required).

To send an SMS, simply send an IM to the number you wish to SMS in the international dialling format. For example, to send an SMS to a number in the U.S. of (444) 555-6666, send an IM to +14445556666. The recipient can reply to the message and you will receive it as an IM.

iPod Touch can also use this neat trick, provided they're somewhere with WiFi access.

Before you get too excited, the SMS feature doesn't work in all countries. We know it works in the U.S, but our readers from abroad will have to test it out for themselves. Feel free to send your reports to tim at gizmag dot com.

iPhone 3G unlock gets a massive step closer

Although Apple tried desperately hard to lock out the iPhone Dev Team from ever being able to software unlock the iPhone 3G, the latest video from the Dev Team shows a software 3G unlock is closer than ever!

Have you been patiently waiting for an iPhone 3G unlock to appear?

Well, you’re not alone – millions have wanted a free unlock solution from the iPhone Dev Team, Geohot, Ziphone Zibri or anyone else smart enough to make the unlock happen.

While no 3G unlock has yet been made available, the iPhone Dev Team has posted a video in its blog showing “Custom application execution on the PBM8878”, with the PBM8878 being the “baseband processor” inside the iPhone 3G.

The video shows a connection to the iPhone 3G via SSH, the kernel version, a connection to the basebase, the display of baseband information and then the Dev Team’s PMB8878 baseband tool which is invoked using a “custom AT command”.

Eight sweet free iPhone apps we love - and 4 we can't get

October 27, 2008 The all-conquering iPhone is a pretty impressive gadget out of the box - but it's the fantastic App Store that really keeps the honeymoon going, giving users access to literally thousands of downloadable third-party applications. From the sublime to the ridiculous, they're only a few taps away - and a large number of them are free. Useful? Sometimes. Perfect? Rarely. Addictive? Hell yes, show me an iPhone user that hasn't thumbed through the app store late at night and I'll show you somebody who should have bought a Nokia. Here's a few of our favorite freebies - and a couple of things we want to know why we can't have!

1. AroundMe Where's the nearest bank? This is a fantastic app that takes your GPS location and shows you what's nearby, from banks, bars and coffee shops, to petrol stations, hotels, parking garages and hospitals - ranked by proximity. Once you decide on a business, you're presented with full contact details, a map and route details if you want them. We're not sure where AroundMe takes its data from, but it does an excellent job, only limited by the database. A must-have app.

2. Thumbtacts One of the many criticisms of the iPhone is that its computer-like interface can make it a bit clunky to use as a phone. Finding and calling a contact, for example, can be a frustrating exercise if you've only got one hand free. But hey, who buys a phone to make calls these days anyway right? Thumbtacts offers a creative solution by breaking the contact list down into a series of simple thumb-clickable options that quickly and accurately find the number you're after. Hard to explain but easy to use, Thumbtacts is almost always a quicker way to find and call contacts than the standard contacts list. Nice one!

Disney releases free iPhone game to promote film

The world of free iPhone games is getting more interesting, as brands of all kinds wake up to the promotional opportunities of giving away a game on the App Store.

The latest is called RhinoBall, and it's been released by Disney to promote the film studio's new animated comedy BOLT.

The game, developed by AvatarLabs, owes just a little to Super Monkey Ball. You have to roll a hamster in a ball around a city to find a dog called Bolt, using accelerometer controls and picking up lightning bolts along the way.

The interesting thing is the game's production values – high – and the way it includes video clips from the film alongside the core gameplay.

Traditionally, movie games on mobile have been offered as premium products, so it's fascinating to see a studio giving away a game on the App Store instead.

Many More Free iPhone Apps Coming Soon Thanks to LiveRail

Since the launch of Apple’s App Store, developers have faced an ongoing dillema: “For Free, or Not For Free”? Putting a price on an application to generate some revenue obviously adds a significant barrier to entry, especially when there are so many free apps available. But it also adds a level of credibility - many people assume that because free apps aren’t earning money, the developers probably haven’t put much effort into them.

Today sees the launch of LiveRail for the iPhone, an advertising platform that could help change this paradigm entirely by allowing free applications to still monetize effectively. LiveRail allows iPhone application developers to embed brief video advertisements into their applications, which play immediately after launching an app (developers get paid on a CPM basis). CEO Mark Trefgame says that the platform is plug-and-play, allowing developers to implement it with a minimal amount of effort and only a few lines of code.

The technology behind the application is impressive - this isn’t just a single video that’s embedded into the application.

Shake my Hand for a Free iPhone

You're at some dull tech conference and somebody want to give you yet another business card. Only this time, you actually want to keep their details and you know that if you accept the dead-tree token it'll end up in your wallet, only to be seen again when you're sitting at a particularly wobbly restaurant table.

But if you have Handshake, a new, free iPhone application, you can quickly and easily swap your contact details with them. Like any app of this type, it needs both parties to be running it, but with that caveat, Handshake looks like a very easy way to network:

The iPhones don't connect directly to each other -- instead the connection goes via Handshake's server, so unless you have good Wi-Fi then this is pretty useless for the iPod Touch (although it will run).

Namco launches free iPhone trial of Pac-Man

The App Store really needs a more formal system for developers and publishers to release free demos of their iPhone games.

Ideally, it'd be an N-Gage-style system where users download the full game, but most of it is locked until they tap a button to buy. In the absence of that, publishers have to resort to releasing separate 'Lite' versions of their games for free.

Namco Networks is the latest, having released Pac-Man Lite over the weekend. It's just the first stage of the game, with the aim of persuading users to upgrade to the full £4.99 version.

A free demo of Pac-Man might sound like a silly idea – who DOESN'T know what the game is like? – but actually it's a smart move, allowing players to see how the iPhone-specific controls work.

However, the offer isn't quite as generous as that extended to Android gamers, who'll be getting the full-fat Pac-Man for free when the Android Market launches this month.

Free iPhone App Prevents Speeding Tickets

Here's yet another great idea for an iPhone app. Trapster, from a company by the same name, enables iPhone owners to avoid one of life's many perils: the speeding ticket. In theory, at least.

The free app follows a driver's location as a dot on a map. If said driver passes a police officer lurking by the side of the road with a radar gun, they can tap the iPhone to mark the location as a speed trap point. That data point is then sent to a server; other drivers using Trapster will then be alerted of that speed trap when they approach this point on the map.

Of course, like any social networking application, Trapster relies on people actually using it to be effective. Come on people, take one for the team. It's free, and speeding tickets are not. [From: Wired]

iPhone App Avalanche 13: Crazy Pumpkin, iDayDream, i.TV and Babe-O-Meter!

It’s time for App Avalanche 13, and this week we’re taking a look at the Entertainment category in the App Store and at what’s Good, Better, Best, and, of course, the CrApp. There’s at least 26 (!) pages of Entertainment apps and counting. After exhaustive research by our highly-trained TiPb staff (please note: author taking massive liberties with the truth here; likely exaggerating), these apps have been hand-picked for YOU. Given that this is unlucky Avalanche 13, written on the 13th, I’m sure the author of the CrApp is feeling quite unlucky for being featured here!

Good

Crazy Pumpkin iPhone AppCrazy Pumpkin, by Ezone.com, is just in time for Halloween. This is a fun and useful app with many features, including digital Jack-o-lantern, scary sound effects, multicolored flashlight, and even a pumpkin-carving design tool with more than a thousand face combinations. It’s a great way to get in the Halloween spirit and will certainly be a winner with kids and adults alike. Get it here for FREE!

Better

iDaydream iPhone AppiDaydream, from Brian Smith, is reminiscent of laying on your back and watching the puffy clouds float by. Sometimes you have to lean back in your office chair and watch the clouds go by — on your iPhone! Get it here for $.99 cents.

The Graveyard for iPhone Apps

graveyard for iphone apps

One Mac developer, Peter Hosey, has assembled what he calls is a list of "every application that Apple has killed, along with the reason that they stated for doing so, and what has happened to the app since". The list contains exactly ten entries, including the infamous "i am rich" app. Its hard to imagine that only ten apps have been denied from the AppStore, but the list is worth perusing...

Knots: Tie Yourself Up with Free iPhone Game

Knots is like Twister for your fingers. Colored dots pop up on the screen and you hold a finger until told to release and stop on another dot. And, just like the original Twister, the longer knots goes on the more twisted you become and the more fun you have.

The only problem is that currently, it's hard to make the game last. Knots is a 1.0 release that still has a few bugs to work out. The touchpad is overly sensitive, so rocking your finger — not actually lifting your finger — will sometimes result in a sad faced ending to the game. And, at times the game freezes which also results in an early end.

iPhone drives Shazam usage

Music discovery specialist sees huge uplift in traffic from iPhone version of its service.

Shazam is reaping the rewards from its free iPhone app, with average usage ballooning to up to 20 interactions a month compared to three-to-five times a lifetime on regular handsets.

The company, which enables people to identify music they are listening to and then follow links to either buy or share a song, has already seen the iPhone version of its service downloaded 1.5 million times from App Store.

Speaking in a Reuters video report, Shazam CEO Andrew Fisher said: "On average we were seeing people use our service three-to-five times over their lifetime.

Top 10 Fun, Cheap and Free iPhone Apps

Here are ten apps that won't annoy you (OK, Alarm Free might) and are either clever diversions or simply fun toys. All links take you to the App Store. Check out the gallery for a preview of everything I've mentioned. All of these were free when I first downloaded them, as I'm a terrible cheapskate, but several now cost between $.99 and $1.99, which isn't bad.

Ancient Wisdom
Basically just a database of quotes from three philosophers: Lao Tzu, Miyamoto Musashi and Sun Tzu. To make it a little more fun the developers make the quotes come from cute cartoon monkeys. Not exactly genius, but fun and the quotes are, of course, pure gold. Better than a Magic 8-Ball, I think.

Newtonica Player
This simple app has you spin a mesh ball to generate a "beat" that times the pace of the electronica music. There is a surprising amount of depth to the song, simple as it is. I was able to modify the tune a bit depending on my spinning, direction and how long I kept spinning. Terribly simple but fun because of those little tonal surprises.
