Apple's core business has shifted to being driven by computer, iPhone sales

In 2001, Apple was a shell of the vibrant company it had been in the 1980s. Battered by years of losses to Microsoft, the company had little options. It had virtually no market share in the personal computer industry, and little brand image. Then the company invented a seemingly insignificant little device that would go on to change everything -- the iPod.

The iPod not only turned around Apple's finances, it redefined the entire company. Apple went from a tired elitist on the brink of financial collapse to a hip trend-setter delivering music to the masses and with plenty of cash to burn. In Q1 2006, just 5 years after the launch of the iPod, the iconic device accounted for 55.6 percent of Apple's sales.

Send free SMS from your iPhone

July 23, 2008 Looking for a way to offset the ridiculously expensive data plan that your new 3G iPhone att-eyes-googles-android-3g-iphone Apr-2-2008 is tied to? AOL's free AIM client has a feature you might be interested in - the ability to send free SMS messages.

Make sure your iPhone is running the iPhone 2.0 software, and grab AIM here (iTunes itunes-overtakes-wal-mart-in-music-sales Apr-4-2008 required).

To send an SMS, simply send an IM to the number you wish to SMS in the international dialling format. For example, to send an SMS to a number in the U.S. of (444) 555-6666, send an IM to +14445556666. The recipient can reply to the message and you will receive it as an IM.

iPod Touch can also use this neat trick, provided they're somewhere with WiFi access.

Report: IPhone Problems -- Foes Rejoice, Fans Stay Unquestioningly Loyal

The rough ride of Apple's iPhone is exciting Verizon and others, but Apple fans are unmoved

Apple's iPhone went 3G and was met with great enthusiasm from Apple's fans. Within a week of its launch, it had hit a million units sold. The frantic pace of sales, began to slow, but still Apple managed to reach the 2 million mark, not long after, according to analysts.

Since, complaints about call quality, dropped calls, and defects have created somewhat of a public relations nightmare for AT&T and Apple. For the signal related problems, Apple and AT&T have rolled out a fix, the details of which were finally leaked by an AT&T employee. However, that has not stopped Verizon from seizing on public ill-will towards the iPhone and running new advertising campaigns specifically attacking it.

"A phone is only as good as the network it’s on," Verizon's ad blasts, and in an email to Wall Street analysts, a Verizon executive chided, "So much for a ‘new’ way of doing business at the old AT&T — your father’s phone company."

Part of what has left Apple and AT&T so vulnerable to such attacks is that they have done little to explain what is causing the problems. This has created an air of uncertainty around the iPhone that is perhaps unjustified, but largely the fault of the pair's silence.

Aside from the technical details of the problem, one additional aspect may simply be logistics. AT&T's 3G network covers only 310 cities of 100,000 people or more, though it plans to add 40 more cities by the end of 2008.

Twinkle 1.0 released for the iPhone and iPod Touch! Free!

Wow, I am excited about this app! I’ve been waiting for ever. Twinkle is a Twitter client for the iPhone and you’ll notice under the settings they’ve left it open to add more services. It’s a beautiful app and laid out perfectly. You can also invite others to use Twinkle right through the app. The kewl thing is it’s not limited to just Twitter (friendfeed maybe?). You can also take a picture and send it along with your message. It gives you a link in the message so anyone can see it even if they’re not using Twinkle.

Another very very sweet feature of Twinkle is the Nearby feature. You can see other users on Twinkle within whatever mile range you set. This will need updated to include Kilometers for metric users but it’s an amazing feature that lets you see and talk to people around you. This will continue to help define the meaning of social networking.
