iPhone is Racing ahead in Mobile Web Traffic

Apple’s iPhone accounts for 66.1 percent of all mobile Web traffic according to a new study from NetApplications, a Web solutions provider. The Java ME platform lags way behind with 9.06 percent and Windows Mobile is playing catch up at 6.91 percent. NetApplications says that although the iPhone has a huge lead in mobile browsing share, Android and Symbian, which are tied for fourth place with 6.15 percent share of Web traffic and BlackBerry with 2.24 percent share are picking up the pace.

Don’t conclude the figures mean that Apple’s iPhone is losing Web traffic share to its rivals, however. NetApplications says you must consider that the mobile Web browsing market overall is expanding rapidly. Mobile Web browsing as a percentage of all Web browsing finished February at 0.72 percent, up from 0.69 percent in January 2009.

proSEO Reveals the Inner Workings of Web Pages

If you make it your business to understand how well Web pages are optimized for search engines, proSEO is a good way to go for iPhone users. This handy app from Infinidigm enables to look at a Web page’s keywords, tags, HTML and other important attributes that factor into a site’s search engine ranking.

Enter the URL of the Web page you wish to analyze into the app’s browser and bookmark it if you plan to revisit it. After the Web page loads, tap the Analyze button and proSEO does the heavy lifting.

You can analyze a page by selecting one of four options: Source Analysis, Body Text Analysis, Anchors and Link Text and Images and Alt Text. Tap, say, Body Text Analysis and you’ll see the all the text that appear on your chosen Web page, the page’s word count and its stop word ratio.

Some of that is evident, even for users who are unfamiliar with SEO jargon. Stop word ratio is a measure of the number of times words such as “the,” “and” and other oft-used words appear on a page. Searchbots ignore commonly used words like those.

New Role for the iPhone: Speech Therapy Assistant

Is there anything Apple’s iPhone can’t do? Scientists at Hollins Communications Research Institute, a top center for stuttering research and treatment, this week say they have been successfully using the iPhone as a stuttering therapy tool.

The scientists programed the iPhone with a sophisticated voice monitoring system that evaluates and scores speech behaviors taught during stuttering therapy.

The iPhone is being used by their owners to work on their speech fluency whenever and wherever it suits them.

When the research institute’s clients use their iPhones during training at a shopping mall, restaurant or business, the phones display fluency measurements for each utterance onscreen.

Having this data immediately available to stuttering therapy program participants makes speech practice more effective and helps hastens its benefits, the scientists say.

In addition, the iPhone records every speech sample and then transmits the file to the institute for analysis and to provide more precise training for each individual.

An estimated 66 million people worldwide suffer from the effects of stuttering, with 3 million living in the U.S., according to the National Institutes of Health. There is no cure for the condition — only stuttering treatment can help.

One Mac developer, Peter Hosey, has assembled what he calls is a list of "every application that Apple has killed, along with the reason that they stated for doing so, and what has happened to the app since". The list contains exactly ten entries, including the infamous "i am rich" app. Its hard to imagine that only ten apps have been denied from the AppStore, but the list is worth perusing...

Knots: Tie Yourself Up with Free iPhone Game

Knots is like Twister for your fingers. Colored dots pop up on the screen and you hold a finger until told to release and stop on another dot. And, just like the original Twister, the longer knots goes on the more twisted you become and the more fun you have.

The only problem is that currently, it's hard to make the game last. Knots is a 1.0 release that still has a few bugs to work out. The touchpad is overly sensitive, so rocking your finger — not actually lifting your finger — will sometimes result in a sad faced ending to the game. And, at times the game freezes which also results in an early end.
