Can you manage the iPhone like a BlackBerry?

Users love the iPhone, but IT does not. The biggest complaints: The iPhone can't be managed for security and access policies like a BlackBerry can. Businesses can buy a BlackBerry Enterprise Server or Motorola Good for Enterprise server to manage user profiles over the air, ensuring that users conform to password policies, encryption policies, app-installation restrictions, and so on, as well as have their e-mail, VPN, and other settings preconfigured to reduce hands-on deployment effort.

For some time now, Apple's offered its free iPhone Configuration Utility for Windows and Mac that lets IT set up and install configuration profiles on iPhones in BlackBerry-like breadth. But it doesn't provide the over-the-air reach, the granularity of control, or the visibility that BlackBerry Enterprise Server offers. Lacking these key needs of larger businesses, iPhone Configuration Utility has been dismissed as a toy application.

What Would a Free iPhone Do for Sales?

How much difference will dropping the price of an iPhone from $199 to $99 make in Apple’s sales?

If you are being rational, it shouldn’t make that much of a difference, given that the $30 per month data plan costs $720 over two years. In other words the $100 price cut only reflects an 11 percent reduction in the total cost.

But since when were people rational? A year ago, Apple dropped the upfront cost of an iPhone from $399 to $199, but AT&T increased the monthly data plan’s cost by $10 a month (leading to a net increase in cost of $40 over two years.) The result: sales in the United States doubled, according to an analysis by Gene Munster, the analyst at Piper Jaffray. (There’s more to the increase of sales of course. The second generation iPhone was much faster and the App Store has been creating lots of new reasons for people to buy an iPhone.)

Mr. Munster continues to believe that this year’s price cut will help drive iPhone sales even higher. Indeed, he predicts that Apple will sell more of last year’s 3G phones at $99 than it will this year’s 3GS models, which are faster and have video recording capability, at $199 and $299. (I know you, Bits readers are early adopters and would likely spend the extra $100 if you were in an iPhone-buying mood, but not everyone takes gadgets as seriously as you do.)

“Ninety nine dollars is a magic price point,” he said. That’s on the low side for top-tier smart phones. AT&T is currently selling a refurbished Blackberry Curve at that price, and Verizon has the aging Palm Centro at $49.

Apple is also throwing a sharp elbow at Palm, Google and anyone else that might be tempted to compete with Apple by undercutting the iPhone’s price.

Does the iPhone need a real keyboard?

The other day, as I sat waiting for Jeff Bezos to appear in an auditorium to announce the new Kindle DX, I was surrounded by iPhones. Literally. Two people to my right, two people in front of me, and three people in back of me were all tapping out IMs or e-mails on their iPhones. What struck me was how awkward most of these people looked, tapping away with a single finger, laboring to type sentences just a few lines long.

Now I know some people can type quickly using the iPhone's virtual keyboard. A week earlier I'd witnessed a woman, her iPhone sitting on a table, taping with two fingers at a highly elevated rate (the rat-tat-tat of her typing on the table was quite noisy, which drew onlookers). But there are still a lot of people out there who just can't get used to typing on the iPhone. And many a BlackBerry user has told me she will never be able to switch to the iPhone because she needs a physical keyboard.

My wife is a case in point. She lives on her Blackberry and can type emails with astonishing speed. When she was required recently to get a "personal" cell phone separate from her work cell phone, she opted to get the exact same BlackBerry Curve on AT&T that she used for work--even though she could have gotten the iPhone for the same price (at least in terms of hardware costs). She's a BlackBerry user through and through, even after a couple of her BlackBerries broke (more on that in a minute).

While i was busy developing a free theme for iPhone through iPhone theme maker, my friend shared the theme that he was using in his Blackberry phone, and it totally resembled the iPhone interface and its buttons, sleek options etc. And it was called bPhone theme.

How to Turn your Free iPhone into a BlackBerry

If you’ve been following me on Twitter, you may have noticed that there has been some debate recently with Stephen Fung from FutureLooks.com. Stephen was going to purchase an iPhone 3G, until he walked into Rogers and fell in love instantly with a BlackBerry Bold, and ended up buying that instead.

The iPhone is one amazing device for what it can do well (surf the web, email, camera, iPod, videos, slick UI, form factor, App Store, etc). It definitely is one of the strongest contenders for the perfect phone.

Apple has been addressing our needs and desires through firmware updates, so in due time the iPhone just keeps getting better and better. However, let’s be honest here, there are shortfalls such as the lack of copy and paste (Clippy solves this if you’re jailbroken) and push notifications.

RIM's Touts Wi-Fi BlackBerry As An iPhone-Killer For Enterprise

Though it's not the first Wi-Fi/cellular device to arrive on American shores, it is the first of the popular BlackBerry smartphones to offer both forms of connectivity.

Priced to compete with the iPhone and offering a similar blend of cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity, the dual-mode BlackBerry 8820 is now available to U.S. customers through AT&T (T), the company said Thursday.

Introduced in July, the 8820 is the first BlackBerry to provide access to both public and private Wi-Fi networks, as well as cellular systems. It is now on sale at AT&T stores and on the AT&T Web site, at $349 for the device with a two-year service plan.

RIM (RIMM) launched a Wi-Fi-only BlackBerry in February 2005. Now, BlackBerry loyalists can use their cellular service for voice calls and e-mail, and their corporate in-house wireless LAN or public Wi-Fi hotspots for e-mail and limited Web browsing.

Though it's not the first Wi-Fi/cellular device to arrive on American shores, it is the first of the popular BlackBerry smartphones to offer both forms of connectivity. As such the 8820 is expected to be popular with enterprise customers accustomed to BlackBerry's iconic design and ease of use -- and to help blow open the long-anticipated, slow-to-arrive market for dual-mode handsets in this country.

iPhone Competition: Dual-Mode BlackBerry 8820

Waterloo-based Research in Motion (RIM) has just launched the new BlackBerry 8820, a dual-mode cell phone that is able to switch between cellular and WiFi networks to make calls and surf the web. The blackberry 8820 will be available through AT&T later this summer. The new BlackBerry will feature a full QWERTY keyboard, a nicely sized 320 x 240 pixel display and a trackball navigation system as seen in the BlackBerry Pearl.

Pricing has not yet been announced for the 8820. Previously, AT&T has offered some BlackBerry devices for as low as US$50, plus a monthly voice and data service plan. It is not likely that the 8820 will be so cheap.

The 8820 will include built-in GPS support, a multi-media player for videos and music, and an expandable memory slot for micromemory cards in sizes up to 32GB, RIM said in a statement. The battery is also removable (user-replaceable), according to the Waterloo, Ontario-based vendor.

The new smart phone switches “seamlessly” between EDGE, GPRS and GSM networks and 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi, according to RIM. The BlackBerry 8820 can operate with the BlackBerry Internet Service, allowing you to manage up to 10 personal and business e-mail accounts, or with BlackBerry Enterprise Server installed inside a user’s business, which provides IT administration ability for Lotus Domino, Microsoft Exchange and Novell Groupwise systems.
