Make Cheap iPhone Skype Calls Over the 3G Network

Want to use Skype to make calls when you’re out of WiFi hotspots? Imagine if you could use Skype ANYTIME, ANYWHERE by using your Rogers/Fido data plan! You can do so by following the steps below…

1. Jailbreak your iPhone (follow our guide here). If you’re on an iPhone 3GS, I’d highly suggest purchasing 3G Unrestrictor to allow Skype to work over 3G.

If you’re using an iPhone 3G, just install VoIPOver3G via Cydia, and it will automatically hack Skype to work over 3G.

2. Turn off WiFi to test the 3G capability. Launch Skype, login. Now, go try to make a call and voila! Skype over the Rogers/Fido 3G network on your iPhone! The sound quality is amazing! Listen for yourself with the Skype Test Call.

3. Now with calling over 3G, you can subscribe to Skype and pay $3 for unlimited calling to Canada/USA! AND get Caller ID for Skype!

Enjoy making calls over 3G. Don’t worry, it won’t use up your 6GB data plan unless you’re talking for 24 hours straight non-stop. Skype has been one of my favourite apps now because of this little hack. Let me know how this works for you!

AT&T Opens iPhone to 3G VoIP Traffic, President of Skype Responds

AT&T does the unthinkable and ungimps the iPhone

When it comes to VoIP on the iPhone, both Apple and AT&T have been quite restrictive with regards to what is made available to customers. Customers wishing to use VoIP programs like Skype on the iPhone have been relegated to using Wi-Fi instead of streaming data over AT&T's already fragile 3G network.

Perhaps the biggest battle came with the rejection of Google Voice. Apple flatly rejected the application citing that it would cause confusion with the existing phone features on the iPhone. Many people, however, believed that the snub came down directly from AT&T.

The block of cellular VoIP on the iPhone infuriated many considering that Blackberry devices running on AT&T networks have had access to such applications (including Google Voice). AT&T today even acknowledged the artificial iPhone blocks; "For some time, AT&T has offered a variety of other wireless devices that enable VoIP applications on 3G, 2G and Wi-Fi networks."

Skype's Warning to Jailbreakers

Skype, the highly popular Voip over wi-fi app, just got an update to version 1.0.1. This version adds an extra warning to jailbroken and future jailbreakers. When you open the app for the first time, a Warning notice will pop up saying

Warning
This version of Skype is only supported on unmodified versions of OS iPod 2.2.

This warning was probably put there because jailbroken users were complaining to Skype about MobileSubstrate's frequent crashing. But now that Saurik has confirmed that the problem is fixed, there shouldn't be any more problems with a jailbroken iPod/iPhone and Skype.

Free Unlimited iPhone Calls - Long Distance too!

In the days before cell phones and applications like the new Skype for iPhone, there was this thing called the hotel room telephone.

Here's how it worked. You'd pick up the bedside phone, dial to get an outside line, dial a number, and talk. Then, when you'd check out, the front desk clerk would give your bill. And you'd wonder: How could a 10-minute call home cost more than a lobster dinner and bottle of wine from room service?

But that, as they say, was then. Now when you're traveling, you can call home and talk for hours, for free, thanks to Skype (and other Voice over IP services). This week: a look at the new Skype for iPhone app.

Good-to-Excellent Audio Quality

After much anticipation, Skype recently released its free iPhone app to complement its free Skype-to-Skype VoIP calls. PC World's Liane Cassavoy gave Skype for iPhone a favorable review. My experience with Skype for iPhone so far has been positive, too.

Using Skype for iPhone, you can make and receive VoIP calls using your iPhone over a Wi-Fi network. (As of this writing, you can't make Skype calls on an iPhone over AT&T's cellular voice network.) If you're calling another Skype user, the call is free--even if the person lives oceans away. You can call landline or cell phones inexpensively, beginning at around 2.1 cents per minute.

Free iPhone App for Skype launched, but not in Canada

EBay Inc., is planning to launch its Skype voice-over-internet phone service for the iPhone on Tuesday and for Research in Motion's BlackBerry handheld devices in May as part of its expansion from desktop computers to wireless devices.

But while iPhone owners around the world will be able to use the Skype application to call and message other Skype users for free using the Wi-Fi connections on their smartphones, Canadians won't be among them.

Chaim Haas, a public relations representative acting on behalf of Skype, said the application is available in every country in which the iPhone is on sale and in which Apple has an iTunes Store — with the exception of Canada.

Haas said this is because of patent-licence restrictions but would not elaborate except to specify that it is a patent issue related to Skype, not Apple.

Skype, which has more than 400 million users, is already available on Nokia phones, phones using Microsoft's Windows Mobile and phones based on Android, Google Inc.'s mobile system. But the iPhone and RIM's BlackBerry devices remain among the most popular advanced handsets.

Founded in 2003 and owned by eBay Inc. since 2005, Skype offers software that people can download and use for free in order to call other Skype users over the internet.
