iPhone 3G Speeds Tested & Compared, City by City

As wireless users know all too well, not all 3G networks are created equal. PC World recently put Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T to a multi-city test to determine which best delivers speed and reliability.

The magazine took a snapshot of the performance of those three major networks in 13 markets during March and early April (specifically, 5443 individual tests from 283 testing locations). Weather, time of day, and other variable factors not withstanding, the magazine found that Verizon had an average download speed of 951 kbps, and produced uninterrupted speeds in 89.8 percent of tests.

For its part, Sprint's 3G network delivered solid connections in 90.5 percent of cities tested, with average download speeds of 808 kbps across 13 cities, while the AT&T network's average download speed clocked in at 812 kbps. But where reliability was concerned, AT&T delivered only 68 percent of the time.

Free iPhone Storage: Keep Your Files in the Cloud with ZumoDrive

Not enough space on your iPhone for all your music? Need more storage for your tiny netbook hard drive? ZumoDrive promises to solve conundrums like these by keeping your files in the cloud but making them accessible in real-time, just as though they were local. Inother words, it's a virtual hard drive that lives online.

When you install the Windows or Mac client, ZumoDrive adds this virtual drive to your system, complete with prefab folders for music, photos, and documents. Just drag and drop your stuff to one of these folders (or create new ones--remember, the virtual drive works just like a regular drive) to copy it to the ZumoDrive cloud.

From there, you can access those files in any Web browser or on any PC that has the ZumoDrive client installed. There's also a free iPhone app that lets you retrieve documents, photos, and music (which you can stream over 3G, EDGE, or Wi-Fi--a great workaround for memory-crunched devices). Free Unlimited iPhone Calls - Long Distance too!

In the days before cell phones and applications like the new Skype for iPhone, there was this thing called the hotel room telephone.

Here's how it worked. You'd pick up the bedside phone, dial to get an outside line, dial a number, and talk. Then, when you'd check out, the front desk clerk would give your bill. And you'd wonder: How could a 10-minute call home cost more than a lobster dinner and bottle of wine from room service?

But that, as they say, was then. Now when you're traveling, you can call home and talk for hours, for free, thanks to Skype (and other Voice over IP services). This week: a look at the new Skype for iPhone app.

Good-to-Excellent Audio Quality

After much anticipation, Skype recently released its free iPhone app to complement its free Skype-to-Skype VoIP calls. PC World's Liane Cassavoy gave Skype for iPhone a favorable review. My experience with Skype for iPhone so far has been positive, too.

Using Skype for iPhone, you can make and receive VoIP calls using your iPhone over a Wi-Fi network. (As of this writing, you can't make Skype calls on an iPhone over AT&T's cellular voice network.) If you're calling another Skype user, the call is free--even if the person lives oceans away. You can call landline or cell phones inexpensively, beginning at around 2.1 cents per minute.

Amazon.com Releases Free IPhone App

Amazon.com on Tuesday announced the release of an application designed to work on the iPhone and iPod touch. It's available for free download from the App Store.

The new application helps users search and browse for products offered by Amazon.com and associated retailers including Target and Macy's. Customer reviews can be viewed using the app, and transactions can be completed using Amazon.com's "1-Click Shopping" and through the "Amazon Prime" premium shipping service.
