Apple's iPhone 3G: All Cracked Up

Apple's iPhone 3G is not all it's cracked up to be

Apple's 3G iPhone was met with much fanfare when it launched earlier this month. The new phone brought 3G download speeds, GPS hardware, and a new iTunes App Store among other things. The popularity of the iPhone brand along with the buzz created by Apple generated sales of over one million units worldwide within three days of launch.

All is not well in iPhone 3G land, however. The folks over at Engadget noticed that a number of people are noticing stress fractures/cracks in their iPhone 3G casings. The cracks seem to mostly affect owners of white 16GB iPhone 3G models, but owners of black iPhone 3Gs have reported problems as well (but to a lesser degree).

The majority of the cracks are showing up around the edges of the phone and near the headphone jack. Some people have reported seeing cracks as soon as a day after receiving the phone, while others saw cracks within the first one to two weeks of ownership.

IPhone 3G Users Heated Over Network Issues

Brokeniphone_2

People aren't done complaining about the iPhone 3G. This time, it's the 3-G network that's grinding people's gears.

Hundreds of peeved iPhone users in Apple's support forums say they're experiencing problems with the 3-G network. Some Gadget Lab readers have written in echoing similar concerns. And CNET editors say they're receiving e-mails about 3-G issues, too.

The problems vary. A few readers said they can only stay on 3-G for a few minutes before their iPhone switches over to the slower EDGE network -- even in areas with rich 3-G coverage. Some forum users said they're getting poor reception (e.g. two bars) everywhere they go.

It's unclear as to whether it's a network or hardware issue. But a Gadget Lab reader said AT&T assured him it was a problem with the phone.

"I work in Midtown Manhattan, probably the most 3-G-covered area, and indeed I get five full glorious bars of broadband goodness at my desk -- for two minutes," the reader wrote in an e-mail. "Then iPhone switches to EDGE, still full bars mind you, and back to 3-G for a hot second. All day. Apart from draining my battery, this make me type this very e-mail on EDGE when I just racked up 550 bucks for the phone (since I was not eligible for an upgrade). Called AT&T. They told me my phone was defective and that of course it was not the network. Bad 3-G software ? Bad chip?"

AT&T spokesperson Brad Mays said iPhone 3G is "performing great."

AdMob giving away $1,000,000 to iPhone App Developers

AdMob Makes Mobile Ads Suck Less. Will Give Away One Million Dollars Worth of Ads To iPhone App Developers.

On the iPhone, even the ads are cool. Mobile advertising network AdMob is launching a whole new set of customized ads for iPhone apps. As CEO Omar Hamoui explains in the video above, the ads are specifically designed for iPhone apps. Rather than the static text or image ads that make up most of its mobile ad inventory today, these take advantage of specific features of the iPhone.

For instance, an ad for a song can stream the audio or launch the page on iTunes where you can buy it. A movie ad can open up YouTube so you can watch the trailer. An ad for a retailer can find nearby stores on Google maps. Others call a number through the phone, or can take you to a specific Web page. And just like on Facebook, where many of the ads on apps are simply promotions for other apps, an ad for an iPhone app will launch the App Store. (See video below).

To get iPhone app developers to sign up for his new ads, Hamoui is giving away $1 million worth of advertising to the developers with the most compelling apps who apply here. Each developer who is selected will recieve $5,000 worth of free ads for their apps.

Admob already serves up 34 million mobile ads a month on the iPhone's Safari browser. But that is a mere one percent of the total that AdMob serves across all phones. Hamoui, however, believes that the new type of ads he is launching today will quickly make up the majority of his inventory. Some of the advertisers he's already lined up include Ford, Electronic Arts, Land Rover, Jaguar, "The Mummy," Loopt, AccuWeather.com, and MovieTickets.com.

MagicPad Editor Offers Copy and Paste

AppleiPhoneApps.com posts a video of an upcoming text editor called MagicPad that implements its own Copy and Paste functionality.

The solution appears relatively elegant, but does appear to change some of the natural functionality of the magnifying glass. Normally, if you want to position the cursor in the proper location, you press and drag to position the cursor.

MagicPad has modified this functionality so that press and drag will invoke text selection. In order to position the cursor properly, you can still drag your finger to the right spot, but then simply need to tap again to start the selection. The embedded video shows out it works:

Of course, the copy/paste functionality only works within MagicPad itself.

Review: Scrabble for iPhone and iPod touch OS 2.0 by Electronic Arts

The board game Scrabble has been around decades before I was even born. It brings me a lot of joy that EA has ported this word building game over to the iPhone.EA Scrabble for iPhone & iPod touch OS 2.0In case you haven’t heard of Scrabble, it’s a game where you get seven letters that you use to build words on the game board. Certain letters have varying points while certain squares provide opportunities for you to augment your scores. The primary objective of the game is to create words that earn the most points or a higher score than your opponent.

Before moving forward with the review, let me just say that Scrabble doesn’t disappoint and it is worth $9.99!

EA seemed to have put a lot of thought into the opening splash screen with all the fancy animations. That being said, if they’d put more thought or even placing themselves into our shoes; they’d understand that it gets annoying after sitting through the splash screen three or four times. There isn’t a way to skip through or speed up the LONG 20 second wait, so your only option is to patiently wait for it to finish. After the fifth or sixth time, I have this urge to launch my precious iPhone 3G towards the nearest wall (yes, I know it’s misplaced anger and the iPhone doesn’t deserve it - but hey it’s the only tangible object in my hands). Once you get pass the 20-second load time, a menu pops up with options for Quick Play, Custom Play, game Options, Statistics or see More Games by EA.

Apple gets iPhone 3G right for business

With the iPhone 3G's banner opening weekend and newsstands looking like a rack of brochures for the device, a review of the iPhone 3G at this point might be pro forma, except for one thing: Much of the iPhone 3G and the new iPhone 2.0 software remains an enigma to professionals and enterprises, users set apart by, among other things, their tendency to use punctuation in their e-mail. These users demand more from a handset than a cellular browser and YouTube.

With mature and well-established QWERTY devices from HTC, Motorola, Nokia, Palm, and Research in Motion known to be capable of handling the needs of serious users, the iPhone 3G needs to be weighed against alternatives using existing professional and enterprise-targeted handsets to set the bar. As you may recall, I judged the original 2007 iPhone to fall far short of professional standards. The iPhone was too expensive to be missing so much.

This time around, there are two new products under discussion. One is the iPhone 3G, Apple's pair of new 8GB and 16GB phone models (which cost US$199 and $299, respectively, for AT&T customers who agree to a two-year contract) that deliver ActiveSync, Assisted GPS (A-GPS), and 1Mbps 3G cellular data. The other product is the iPhone 2.0 software, Apple's new iPhone firmware and related apps. iTunes 7.7 or later will update existing iPhones and iPod Touches to the 2.0 for free. After that's done, you'll end up with a device that is, except for GPS and 3G, functionally identical to the iPhone 3G. The iPod Touch is also upgradable to iPhone 2.0 firmware for $9.95.

I've taken to referring to first-gen iPhone and iPhone 3G running iPhone 2.0 software as iPhone, which now identifies a consistently implemented platform in the same manner that Mac covers all Apple client computers. Wherever I refer to iPhone 3G, you'll know that I'm making specific reference to Apple's new handset.

Second time's the charm
Apple has turned iPhone into a mobile platform that I can recommend to professional and enterprise users. I make that recommendation with fair confidence, based on my testing of the iPhone 3G against Apple's claims. Those tests continue, and will for some time. It's my opinion that final judgment about the worthiness of a mobile device can't be rendered until you've trusted your digital identity to it.

Clearly, I haven't had time to carry it that far, but the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 2.0 software meet the expectations set by Apple, and Apple's design and engineering produced a mobile device and platform that hold their own against the likes of Nokia E-Series, RIM BlackBerry, and Windows Mobile 6. In areas where Apple chose to focus its innovation, the iPhone 3G exceeds the capabilities of other devices by a margin that makes it hard to imagine competitors closing the gap.

The Best Free iPhone Apps

If you’ve got an iPhone sporting the new 2.0 firmware, chances are you have Super Monkey Ball. (And if you haven’t, what are you waiting for?) But there’s more goodness to be culled from the iTunes app store besides playing games. There are plenty of cool apps out there, and some of the best ones don’t cost a penny. After all, when you spend a big chunk of your disposable income on limited-edition video games, free and useful stuff is a godsend.

Here are a few that are worth checking out:

PhoneSaber: Yes, it is what you think. And even though waving your iPhone like you’re Darth Maul won’t score you a date, it will make your fellow Star Wars fans a little jealous.

Facebook: This app delivers almost all the functionality of the regular site in the iPhone. The best part: You can snap photos and directly upload them to your profile. The chat feature comes in handy at the grocery checkout when two people in front of you are paying with personal checks.

Shazam: While you’re waiting in that grocery aisle and hear that one song by that one band whose front man left and then collaborated with that other band, Shazam can listen to it and, provided that it’s loud enough and there isn’t too much ambient noise, identify that song for you. And sometimes it will let you look up and purchase that song on iTunes or provide a link to a YouTube video of the song. Shazam comes in handy at wedding receptions. And it’s a great conversation starter when you want to chat it up with a cute bridesmaid.

Twitterrific: A clean user interface, along with being able to post photos, makes Twittering less cumbersome and even more addictive.

Urbanspoon: If you’re the indecisive type when it comes to eating out, Urbanspoon will randomly select a neighborhood, cuisine and price range, based on your current location. It works like a slot machine, so if you disagree with the recommendation, just shake the iPhone for another one.

Remote: Control your iTunes library or your Apple TV with your iPhone. A great replacement to the standard-issue Apple remote that has the uncanny ability to get lost between the sofa cushions.

Pandora: If you’re not familiar with Pandora, now is the time to get acquainted with it. Search for a band or song, and Pandora will try to put together a playlist of similar songs or artists. What’s great is that it works over EDGE if you have the older iPhone, so you can discover your new favorite band during your commute. Also available is AOL Radio, but it works only over Wi-Fi.

Jailbreak iPhone 2.0 on Windows with Winpwn

WinPwn is a Windows iPhone 3G jailbreak tool. IT supports both v1.14 and v2.0. It has custom image support, custom payload support and 3g iPhone support.

WinPwn Jailbreak iPhone 2.0

If you don't feel like you're getting all you can from the iPhone App Store and other perks of the iPhone and iPod touch 2.0 software, then jailbreaking is for you. We've already shown you how to jailbreak your iPhone 2.0 on a Mac, but yesterday the Windows version of the iPhone jailbreak tool—called Winpwn—hit the streets, so now Windows users have a user-friendly way to jailbreak. Let's take a step-by-step look at how to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod touch using Winpwn.

Warning: Before you dive in, keep in mind that this jailbreak method is very new. I ran into the same show-stopping snag along the way and have not yet been able to use it to jailbreak my iPhone. Others have had success, so your mileage may vary. Nothing I've been able to do so far has harmed my iPhone in any way. It's just not jailbroken.

UPDATE: Winpwn has updated and is supposed to have addressed the problems many of us were having earlier. My iPhone's got an appointment with Apple this afternoon so I can't re-try it, but if you give the 2.0.0.2 version a try (again, download links on the Winpwn web site), let's hear how it worked for you in the comments. If iClarified's guide is any indication, the few remaining steps we couldn't perform work just as described below.

Download WinPwn

How to get Longer iPhone 3G Battery Life

So you've finally got that spiffy new iPhone 3G. You've waited for a long time for 3G speed, location services, and those really cool iPhone third-party applications and now you're happy. What? You're upset with the battery life?

This is the most common complaint I've heard from the lucky folks who have the 3G iPhone: with some usage, by the end of the day, their battery is almost dead or dead. And, there's no way to swap the battery with a fresh one to fix this problem.
So what's going on? Why did my previous iPhone get such great battery life and my brand spankin' new iPhone gets lousy battery life? The answer is quite simple, and I might add, it's just as it should be: 3G sucks power.

A study done last year by tech website AnandTech showed the actual life of a battery from a original iPhone (edge) vs. a Samsung Blackjack on a 3G network. Their conclusions were as follows:
  • 3G is faster but at the price of higher power consumption
  • 3G gave about 25% less battery life compared to edge in standard web browsing
  • Wifi gave the best battery life compared to 3G and Edge
  • Leaving 3G enabled during talk time had the biggest impact: a 52% reduction on battery life
So why is there such shock from folks that the iPhone 3G has such a short battery life? It's probably because the previous iPhone on Edge had such great battery life. But let's remember that Edge has been around for a while and many companies have "mature" chipsets that are low power compared to 3G chipsets. Remember, one of the reasons 3G was not in the original iPhone, according to Steve Jobs, was that the chip set was too big and it ate batteries for dinner.

Apple's iPhone 3G: Great, But Needs Work

After testing Apple's (AAPL) original iPhone last year, I didn't regret having to ship it back. The phone was slow, so browsing the Web was a pain. And it wouldn't let me to take a call while continuing to browse the Web -- a feature that many other phones offered at that point. With the new iPhone 3G, though, I'm torn. There are lots of wonderful things about the gadget that I'll miss. At the same time, the latest version still needs work.

On the plus side, while the iPhone 3G is expensive, its price is comparable with that of similar devices from other manufacturers. Research In Motion's (RIMM) BlackBerry Curve, which offers Global Positioning System [GPS], a Qwerty keyboard, and a full browser, costs $150 with a two-year contract at AT&T (T) vs. $199 for Apple's least expensive iPhone 3G model. Unlimited BlackBerry and iPhone data plans at AT&T cost the same: $30 a month. At Sprint Nextel (S), the Samsung Instinct costs $130 with a two-year contract, and an unlimited data and voice plan will set you back by $100 a month -- the typical bill an iPhone 3G owner will run up.

The iPhone 3G design is amazing -- and different from the original iPhone in subtle but important ways. The 3G version is more rounded in the back, so it fits in the palm of your hand better and feels more substantial. The new model contains 10 wireless radios vs. just six in the original model, so the phone can access more carriers' networks worldwide and offer GPS capabilities. With the new device you can multitask, surfing the Web while taking a call at the same time.

Snazzy Software But the best part is the software. I loved being able to easily associate photos and map locations with people on my contacts list, to save photos received via e-mail directly into my photo albums, and to see who left me voice mails [a capability called visual voice mail that was a hit with the prior iPhone as well]. I could also get keyboards in 20 languages, including my native tongue, Russian.
