nes4iPhone Released, with WiiMote Support

This past week, Zod released “nes4iPhone”. His newest Nintendo emulator for the iPhone and iPod Touch. This app emulates the original NES, featuring games like ExciteBike, Super Mario Bros., and Punchout. The coolest thing about this emulator is, it features WiiMote support! Yeah, you can sync a WiiMote with your iPhone, via Bluetooth!! You can get the demo version in Cydia now, and purchase the full version in the Rock app, from RockYourPhone, for $4.99. Of course, you must have a jailbroken device to get this.

Hero of Sparta continues to be the App store's hottest seller, priced at $0.99. This hack-and-slash adventure released in December 2008 features some pretty impressive 3D graphics and slick storytelling cut-scenes. The game will give you about four hours of solid gameplay, or about 6-10 for obsessive types -- not bad for the price. This one is recommended for fans of the God of War, Gauntlet, or Diablo franchises.

Five Free iPhone Games Worth a Look

The list of games available in the iTunes App Store is growing daily, and among these are various free titles that are worth a look. We thought we’d share a few of the free games we’ve been wasting spending time with lately.

Apache Lander

Apache Lander [App Store] from PosiMotion is an accelerometer controlled, simplified take on the classic Lunar Lander formula. The goal is to land the helicopter safely on the heli-pad before the fuel stores are depleted. Tilt the iPhone left or right to maneuver towards the heli-pad and control lift by tilting forward or back. The helicopter consumes fuel at an alarming rate and requires an extremely delicate touch-down to avoid crashing (which you’ll do a lot).

Fire Drop

Fire Drop [App Store] from xCube Labs is another take on the popular “matching tile elimination” formula. The game presents a play grid of simmering cauldrons of varying colors that advance upwards row by row. Gameplay involves tapping on groups of three or more like cauldrons, causing them to burst into flame and disappear. There are 15 levels in each of the game’s three stages, and at the end of each level a cheerful looking monk quips various words of wisdom. After completing all three stages, the player will have apparently gained “full wisdom.”

At TouchArcade.com, we recently looked at the two crossword puzzle games found in the App Store and have also provided gameplay videos of each app.

The two crossword puzzle apps include Eliza Block's 2 Across [$5.99, App Store] and Stand Alone, Inc.'s Crosswords [$9.99, App Store]. Readers may remember Eliza Block as the part-time developer who was surprised to find out exactly how well she had been doing with her application sales.

In the end both applications are remarkably similar in execution and functionality, and you are unlikely to make a bad choice with either app. Both applications offer an almost limitless pool of downloadable crossword puzzles as well as access to subscription NYTimes puzzles. At the risk of oversimplifying, if you are a frequent crossword puzzler, Crosswords' landscape view may be worth the additional money if you don’t plan on using the hints as often. 2 Across, however, is also a very capable version, and does offer a few additional features for amateurs, such as letter-level hints and Pen/Pencil modes.
