Stanford’s free iPhone coding class passes 1 million downloads

About a month ago, Wired.com gave you a glimpse into the iPhone application programming course at Stanford University. We also noted the lectures were being videotaped and distributed free on the iTunes U educational channel. We’re delighted to see Stanford’s announcement that the video podcast has surpassed 1 million downloads — the fastest this milestone has ever been reached in the history of iTunes U, according to Stanford. Way to go, Stanford! The next army of iPhone developers salutes you.

Free iPhone Programming Course

One of the undoubted successes in the application and game development world has been iPhone/iPod Touch development. The recent announcement of the one billionth download from Apple's App Store is testament to that fact.

For those just getting started, or wishing to include iPhone development as part of their course Stanford University has released an iPhone Application Programming course. Comprising a set of PDFs with accompanying lectures available on iTunes the course covers everything from the basics of getting started with Cocoa to publishing on the App Store.

Definitely worth a look.

Free iPhone App Development Courses from Stanford University

Stanford University has recently begun offering a free iPhone app development course via iTunes U. The 10-week course is hosted by Apple engineers who walk students through every aspect of iPhone app development. We've taken a look at the first lecture and really enjoyed it. You'll need to already know Objective-C to actually dive in and start writing apps with this course, but it's great to check out even if you're just curios.

Stanford Students Release A Cool Batch Of Free iPhone Apps

Students from Stanford’s Fall 1008 iPhone class CS193P created a nice crop of apps that are now available or will be soon for the iPhone (see our Stanford Facebook apps posts here and here).

A list of them is here, and some of them I’m going to keep on my phone. My favorite is iDiscover, which gives you random content you think will be interesting (text, videos, apps). You rate them and it teaches the app to refine what it sends you in the future. It’s a sort of StumbleUpon for the iPhone, and its addicting. iDiscover is free. Air Guitar, a $1.99 app, looks like it might be another winner but I’m having issues downloading it.

Among the yet-to-be-approved apps, Site Saver looks like a useful way to store web content locally. I tend to take a screen shot of whatever I’m looking at, but this looks like a better solution if it saves the whole web page rather than just what’s on the screen. And Heydar, a location-based dating application, is being released at the perfect time.

Stanford’s FREE iPhone programming online class

Stanford have a new online class on iPhone Programming using Cocoa Touch. You will need to have an Intel-based Macintosh in order to take this class. You will need to install the iPhone SDK too.

The Fall 2008 quarter will mark the beginning of a new class: CS193P iPhone Application Programming from Stanford. The new class is focused on Apple’s iPhone application development using Cocoa Touch.

You will need to have an Intel-based Macintosh in order to take this class. You will need to install the iPhone SDK too. However, there is no need to have an iPhone as the vast majority of the work can be done using the iPhone simulator (included in the iPhone SDK).
