Apple iPhone 4 Reception Issues Mocked By Nokia

Nokia has a little bit of fun with Apple's iPhone 4

Apple may have sold over 1.7 million iPhone 4's during its initial launch, but that doesn't mean everyone is satisfied. Over the past week, there have been numerous reports popping up regarding reception problems with the iPhone 4 when held left-handed.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs boldly proclaimed "Just avoid holding it that way" in an email when a new iPhone 4 customer inquired about how to resolve the problem.

Nokia is now getting in on the action with a posting on its official blog, Nokia Conversations. Nokia points out that its users have a number of ways of holding their phones, and points out four of the most popular: Thumb and Finger, The Cup, The Balance, and The Four-edge Grip.

The Cup is the method that has been nicknamed the "Death Grip" by owners of the iPhone 4 which is the root of the reception problems. Nokia describes that it is "Popular with smaller devices, and typically comfortable for longer phone calls, the cup basically enables you to cup the phone with your whole hand.

"This might result in much of the phone’s edges being covered and the back of the device sitting snugly in the palm of your hand – but don’t be concerned about this, it won’t impact the device’s performance."

Nokia goes on to stay that these four methods of holding a phone result in no signal degradation, and that "The key function on any Nokia device is its ability to make phone calls. After all, that’s why we know them universally as mobile phones."

Now all of this may seem silly in the grand scheme of things, but Nokia is looking to pour a little gasoline on the iPhone 4 “reception” fire. With Nokia finding itself on the losing end of the high-end smartphone market, it probably needs all the help it can get.

'Bricked' iPhone users get their happy ending while Nokia's N82 gets closer to reality

It's been a mixed week over on Pocket Picks, with no obvious trends helpfully emerging for us to apply our typical journo spin on. So, for a change, we thought we'd do something different and bring you a blow by blow, day by day account of what went down on our sister site over the last working week.

Monday was a very busy day, kicking off with yet more murmurs regarding what is being described as the longest rumoured phone in Nokia's history, the N82. If the countdown on Nokia's Play site is anything to go by, we should know for sure by November 2nd.

Later in the day, Sony Ericsson was the subject of some rumour rumbling of its own, with various forum dwellers stating that the manufacturer is set to launch a DVB-H mobile TV phone in 2008.

There was also the happy news that McDonald's is set to offer free Wi-Fi in most of its 1,200 outlets up and down the country by the end of the year. Looks like the Wi-Fi access explosion is set to be accompanied by and explosion in waste lines.

Nokia's N95 vs. Apple's iPhone

When Apple's iPhone debuted, it seemed to have it all - sleek hardware, a revolutionary user interface, and a cult following. But flash-forward a couple of months, and it's getting flak for being chained to AT&T's slowpoke network and for blocking non-Apple software programs.

Meanwhile, Nokia has quietly introduced a North American version of its multimedia smartphone, the N95. Already a hit in Europe, the N95 is one of the first "unlocked" mobile phones to be heavily marketed in the United States.

What exactly is an unlocked phone? For starters it's a device that can work on multiple GSM networks worldwide. It's also open to any mobile applications, not just those allowed by the phonemaker or the network the device happens to be running on. In fact, Nokia (Charts) is even encouraging customers to experiment with their N95 - its new ad campaign touts the phone as "open to anything."

The locked/unlocked debate aside, both the iPhone and the N95 are impressive mobile devices - true pioneers that are finally allowing us to carrying portable, multimedia computers in our pockets.

Nokia Takes a Stab at Apple's "Locked" iPhone

There is no hotter phone on that market than Apple's iPhone. The phone launched in June to massive hype and crowds of eager fans waiting to get their paws on one.

Glassy-eyed Apple lovers were eager to fork over $599 for the 8GB iPhone and $499 for the 4GB iPhone. Those elated iPhone fans, however, turned into blood-lusting Steve Jobs haters when Apple announced a $200 price cut for the 8GB iPhone.

Apple recoiled a bit and offered $100 of in-store credit for ticked off iPhone owners, but the damage was already done.

On the rollercoaster of Apple/iPhone love/hate, iPhone owners were once again elated when it was announced that a free unlock solution was available for the phone. The firmware hack freed customers from AT&T's grasp in the U.S. market (with the only other option being T-Mobile); while worldwide customers were given a reason to embrace the iPhone as a wide range of carriers could be used.

But the happiness didn't last long -- Apple dropped the 1.1.1 firmware update on customers which not only relocked the iPhone, but turned a number of phones into "iBricks."

The latest move by Apple has forced some customers to scream for a class-action lawsuit against the Cupertino-based company.

While all of this has been going on, Nokia must have been sitting back with a big grin on its face. Recently, the company decided to take advantage of Apple's image problem with iPhone customers and started a new advertising campaign.

A keen Mac Rumors forum member spotted a new Nokia ad in New York which takes direct aim at the iPhone. The ad displays such phrases as "Phones should be open to anything," "The best devices have no limits" and "Open to anything."

The ad directs onlooker to Nokia's Nseries phones. The N95, which launched earlier this year, features a 2.6" QVGA screen, 160MB of internal memory, microSD slot for memory expansion, 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth. A newer model, the N95 8GB, has since been released with 8GB of internal memory and a slightly larger 2.8" QVGA screen.
