Free iPhone Kindle App Lets You Read All About It

Thanks to a free new iPhone app, you don't have to fork over $359 for the new Kindle reading device and instead can buy and wirelessly download e-books to your iPhone and iPod Touch.

The app lets choose readers chose from thousands of books in Kindle's library, including New York Times best-sellers, most of which retail for $9.99. E-book aficionados can also download their already purchased titles from Kindle at no charge since they are already backed up on Amazon.com.

If you're not sure if The Shack or War and Peace is your cup of tea, the app lets users read the first chapter of any book for free. The Kindle app also includes Whispersync, a feature that allows users to switch back and forth between Kindles and iPhones, letting readers pick up where they left off in their books from either device.

Amazon.com seems willing to bet that the free app will not cut into Kindle device sales, especially since readers have to buy titles from Kindle. In addition, the Kindle app is now positioned to grab a slice of the e-book market for apps that are already on iPhones.

Security Researcher Posts iPhone Exploit Code Online

A security researcher on Tuesday published exploit code for a security vulnerability in Apple's iPhone that can allow a hacker to gain complete control over the popular mobile device.

HD Moore, creator of the open-source Metasploit vulnerability testing tool, posted the code online and said it exploits a buffer overflow flaw in libtiff, the image rendering library that's used by the MobileMail, MobileSafari, and iTunes iPhone applications.

Moore first began to outline the security shortcomings of the iPhone in late September, when he wrote that any security flaw in any iPhone application can lead to a complete system compromise. Last week, Moore noted that only iPhones that had been unlocked were susceptible to the exploit code he'd been developing.

After Apple issued the 1.1.1 iPhone firmware update the next day, which re-locked unlocked iPhones by stripping away third party packages, Moore said the process of writing exploits for the device actually became much simpler.
