Simple Drummer (free) is a basic drum machine for your iPhone. It comes with a bass drum, snare, high hat, and cymbal. App Store Loses Free iPhone Filters

Okay. I overlooked the fact that Apple have done some futzing with Safari Mobile where clearly it wasn’t needed. But this … this simply will not do.

For the last two days something odd was going on with the App Store. Whenever I clicked on the filter for “All Free Apps,” all apps from September 16th onwards were mysteriously missing. The apps were still there, but it was like the category filter for free apps wasn’t catching anything newer than that. “Odd,” I thought, and kept on working.

Now, I’ve found out why. Apple has quietly removed the option from the App Store entirely, along with the “All iPod Touch Apps” and “All iPhone Apps” filters. Just take a look at the screenshot on your left. Those filters simply aren’t there.

This hits me particularly hard because, as you all know, I do regular installments of the Free App Store Review, and that particular filter enabled me to see all the latest freebies in the App Store with one simple click. Made my job a hell of a lot easier, that did. Now I can’t do that. Now I have to go hunting through every motherfreakin’ category one-by-one and sift through everything to find out what’s new in the land of no-money-down apps.

Quickoffice gives iPhone/iPod Touch users easy access to iDisk with MobileFiles

Quickoffice has recently unveiled MobileFiles, a free iPhone application that enables direct access to a user’s MobileMe iDisk files from an iPhone or iPod Touch.

Currently iPhone/iPod Touch users with MobileMe accounts have easy access to their contacts, calendar, gallery and mail but cannot retrieve their iDisk files directly from their beloved device. Quickoffice addresses this void with MobileFiles.

As expected, MobileFiles’ UI is iPhone-like easy to use, and also provides users with access to Google Docs accounts. The application is (as mentioned) free to download, though I’m not sure it’s available at the moment through AppStore. In its release, Quickoffice stated “Q4″ hinting us we’ll be able to download it anytime soon…

IPhone 2.2: Safari Redesign, Possible Cut and Paste

iphone-safari.jpg

With the iPhone v2.1 software out of the door, Apple is hard at work on v2.2. From this first glimpse it looks like Apple, now that the major bugs have been squashed, is adding some new features.

The screenshot, unearthed by iPhone Atlas, shows a new Safari interface. Above you see a shot from my iPod Touch (left) next to a picture of the new v2.2 Safari. In the new browser, Google gets its own search bar (instead of popping up when you hit the regular URL bar) and the reload button has been moved the address bar, a purely aesthetic change which helps the text-entry areas to look bigger.

Of course, there's still no mention of copy and paste, a seemingly ridiculous omission from such a powerful device. But I have a theory: Apple won't ever put it in, at least not in the form we currently know. The iPhone model is quite different from that of a proper computer. In a Mac or PC, you use the operating system to act on files, be they pictures, e-mails or text documents.

Free iPhone Developer University Program

Apple has introduced a free iPhone Developer University Program aimed at officially accredited higher education institutions that would be interested in introducing curriculum for developing iPhone applications.

Apple’s iPhone Developer University Program allows instructors and professors to provide free full versions of the SDK kit to a development team of up to 200 students.

Additionally, iPhone Developer University Program allows students within the same development team to share their applications with each other through e-mail, or by posting them to a private website for presentation and grading purposes.

And that’s not all — higher education institutions can even submit applications that were created for distribution in the App Store.

Spammers Bait Hooks With Fake iPhone Game

What your parents told you about taking candy from strangers applies to iPhone games as well. iPhone owners should be wary of e-mails purporting to feature a free game for the mobile device. What's attached to that e-mail isn't a game -- it's a Trojan. However, it won't infect your iPhone, or even your Mac. The Trojan targets Windows PCs. It does nothing to the iPhone; it only uses the device's popularity as bait.

Security firm Sophos Latest News about Sophos issued a warning Thursday about e-mails purportedly offering free iPhone games. The missives profess to feature a free game for the smartphone, but the only thing those who download the attachment receive is malware Free Trial. Security Software As A Service From Webroot. designed to infect PCs running Windows.

The scam e-mails purport to include a file dubbed "Penguin.Panic.zip," a supposed version of the popular "Penguin Panic" motion-based iPhone app game, in which a cuddly Penguin jumps from one iceberg to another while avoiding falling icicles.

In the subject line, the hackers tout the file as "Virtual iPhone games!" or "Apple: The most popular game!", "Virtual iPhone toys!" and appeal to users to "Take a break!" or to "Beet (sic) my score! (7000 points)." However, the attached file, Troj/Agent-HNY, is a Trojan.

Create Free iPhone Ringtones Using iTunes in Windows in 8 Steps

One of the things that Apple hasn’t made easy for iPhone owners is providing a way to create custom ringtones in Windows. If you’re a Mac owner you can use GarageBand, but Apple doesn’t provide that application on Windows. Instead what they expect you to do is purchase a song for $0.99, and then convert it to a ringtone for another $0.99.

As it turns out in a few steps you can actually convert a DRM-free song into a ringtone using only iTunes in Windows. The trick also works for Mac users, but using GarageBand is a lot simpler so we’re focusing primarily on the Windows side.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Start iTunes and find the [DRM-free] song you want to convert to a ringtone. Right-click on it and select the Get Info option.
  2. On the Options tab locate the Start Time and End Time options. This is where you want to specify the portion of the song you wanted converted into a ringtone. Check both of the boxes, and make sure your ringtone is under 30-seconds. Press OK when finished.
  3. Right-click on the song you just modified, and choose the Convert to AAC option. If you don’t see this in the context menu navigate to Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Importing, and make sure the AAC Encoder is selected in the Import Using menu.
  4. Once the song has finished being converted to the new format it will appear in your music list, and the “Time” should reflect the correct duration of the ringtone (which should be less than 30-seconds). Now navigate to your iTunes music folder to find the converted song.
  5. Make sure you’re able to see the file’s extension (.M4A) like in the screenshot above. If you don’t see the extension go to Tools -> Folder Options -> View (Organize -> Folder and Search Options on Vista), and uncheck the Hide extensions for known file types box. Then click OK.
  6. Copy the music file (with the .M4A extension) to your desktop. Once you’ve done that rename the file’s extension to .M4R which will make iTunes recognize it as a ringtone. Make sure there are no symbols (underscores, hyphens, etc…) in the file name.
  7. In iTunes go to File -> Add File to Library, and then browse for the file from step 6. Once you’ve selected it press the Open button. iTunes will place the ringtone in the respective section in your library
  8. Sync your iPhone with iTunes and your newly created ringtone should get transferred over. If it doesn’t be sure to check the Ringtones tab in the iPhone configuration section of iTunes to verify that it is setup to sync your ringtones.

Apple issues a recall for its 'Ultracompact USB Power Adapter'

Hey, remember that tiny power adapter you got with your new iPhone? Well guess what? It could get a little dangerous -- so Apple wants you to swap it for a newer, less dangerous one. Apparently, the adapter's metal prongs can break right off, thus creating a "risk of electrical shock" and general mellow-harshing. The company issued a recall today for any of the "Ultracompact USB Power Adapters" which came with iPhone 3Gs in the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, and "several Latin American countries" (don't worry, they've got a list). Check the read link to figure out if you've got the bad kind of adapter, and for goodness sake, be careful when unplugging that thing!

(How To Create) Free iPhone Ringtones

This is a fairly simple process to create ringtones with iTunes with a PC.

Panic as Apple iPhone users are attacked by Windows penguins

What do you get if you mix Windows users with an Apple iPhone, stir well using some panicking penguins and decorate with a chunk of spam? The blindingly obvious answer is the latest Trojan attack, of course...

The iPhone itself is not totally immune from malware. Back in January reports circulated confirming the existence of 113 Prep.

This was not, it has to be said, the most cunningly clever bit of malware ever invented. Perhaps because the author, mucking around with some XML files when he built it, was only 11 years old.

Executing the 'malicious' app just reveals it to say 'shoes' and nothing else. Although deleting it does also deleted some files which in turn breaks some applications.

However, now we have the appearance of an iPhone Trojan that does not even run on the iPhone itself. Instead it is aimed squarely at iPhone using Windows users. Actually, let me rephrase that: it is aimed squarely at iPhone using Windows numpties.

After all, why would any intelligent person open an email claiming to be distributing a free iPhone game as an attachment? How stupid do you need to be to play the games a spammer sends you?

17 Free iPhone Apps You Need Right Now

We take a fast look at new iPhone applications that let you drink beer virtually, interact with music in cool ways, and even do some useful things.

iPhone appsEverybody who knows about the new iPhone applications knows about Super Monkey Ball and MLB At Bat. But after dropping all kinds of dough on a new iPhone and a 3G service plan, you can save some cash and get these great free programs ASAP.

Note: We tested all of these apps on a first-generation iPhone with the 2.0 software installed, so data uploaded and downloaded at EDGE speeds. You'll also notice that this list is short on location-based apps such as Loopt and Whrrl. That doesn't mean they're bad--it's just that the reviewer values privacy and finds them a little creepy.

If you're comfortable with having everyone know where you are at all times, go ahead and try those apps out, too. Here, though, are my first favorites.

Also be sure to see our complete collection of stories, videos, and blogs about the Apple iPhone 3G.

AirMe and Exposure

One of a few Flickr front-ends for the iPhone, AirMe outdoes Exposure (another free iPhone app for Flickr) by allowing you to upload pics directly from your iPhone to your Flickr account. Results are instantaneous: You snap a pic with your iPhone camera, AirMe geotags it (if you want it to), and it's on your Flickr page within a minute. On the other side of the fence, Exposure lets you browse your Flickr photosets, see photos that have been taken close to your current location (again, if you want it to), and basically presents a iPhone-friendly front end to Flickr. It did crash a few times during testing, however.

Your iPhone Spies on You

So when you hit that home button, or, I imagine, change pages in Safari, it takes a quick snapshot of it so it can do a nice transition, flip it, zoom it, whatever. Then it deletes it. Yeah… the thing is, though, it doesn’t really delete it. It quick-deletes it without overwriting. And if someone has physical access to your phone and a few minutes to hack the firmware, they can get every screenshot that survives.

It’s a serious problem in its possibilities for abuse, but unlikely to affect many. After all, if someone steals your iPhone, they’re probably more interested in pawning it than looking through all the boring stuff you do with it. But since the vulnerability has been demonstrated, it would be nice if Apple could fix it. It would be as easy as having the iPhone zero out the data when has CPU to spare; data recovery is made extremely difficult by doing so and it wouldn’t take more than a couple lines of code.

Dev Team Strikes Back: QuickPwn 1.1 and Pwnage 2.1 Released

Take that Apple! The Dev Team has gone and done it again and has struck back at Apple with a vengeance. If you were wondering when you would be able to jailbreak the 2.1 firmware wonder no more… Only one day after Apple released firmware 2.1 the Dev Team responded with not only Pwnage 2.1, but QuickPwn 1.1 as well!

While you may have heard about Apple fighting back the other day against jailbreakers with iTunes 8, this has been taken into consideration by the Dev Team and they’ve built in the patches to correct the iTunes error.

By the way we figured out a way to combat iTunes 8 without patches…and we’re waiting to see what Apple tries next. But we think they might want to rethink their priorities. They probably won’t though, and so we get back to the “cat and mouse” game between Apple and the Dev Team and other third-party communities.

This software is for Mac users only so Windows users will have to wait a little longer to jailbreak the 2.1 firmware. It is important to note, there is still no available software unlock method for the iPhone 3G. I’m beginning to think we may not see one anytime soon. Like always TiPb takes no responsibility for any wrong doings that may occur while jailbreaking. So please be informed before you give this a try. For more information visit the jailbreaking section in our forums.

So what are you waiting for?! Go ahead and download it!

Netshare Officially Banned from the App Store

netshare-banned.png

Null River sends word that Apple has officially responded to them (at long last) and the response is sadly what we expected:

Looks like Apple has decided they will not be allowing any tethering applications in the AppStore. As such, NetShare will not be available in the iTunes AppStore. We are seeing a lot of similar reports from various developers who’s applications were abruptly removed and banned from the AppStore without any violations of the terms of service. This is all unfortunate news for the iPhone platform end-users.

Of course, this also bodes ill for PdaNet and any other folks looking to create tethering apps. Just ain’t gonna happen, folks.

3D Buildings in Google Maps for iPhone 2.1?

UPDATE: Our ace commenters point out this is something Google has been pushing for a while now, pre-2.1, although it may be slowly moving across the US and hasn’t been getting tons of attention everywhere yet. As the effect is likely part of the image downloads, Google can probably push new images any time they like, and not have it bound to any specific point release, so that makes the kind of sense that does. Still, pretty awesome feature!

FlyCast (FlyTunes): Free iPhone Internet Radio

One of the major benefits of the 2.0 firmware on the iPhone is the addition of the App Store. There have been some really cool apps that we’ve seen (and some horrible ones too), but for the most part you need to sift through the junk to find the quality ones.

Today we’re going to check out FlyCast, a free app that streams internet radio to the iPhone! Formerly known as FlyTunes, the app works on the original first gen and iPhone 3G. You can listen to radio, podcasts, and even videos. It’s touted as the best free internet radio app now with all its features.

Highlights of FlyCast:
- select from over 520+ channels of music, news, and sports. Satellite-radio quality audio
- works well on EDGE, even better on 3G and WiFi
- some stations are on demand! This lets you choose and skip songs.
- lack of Canadian content is a bit disappointing
- the app buffers a stream of content, so you can fast forward and rewind your song

If only this app could run in the background , it would be even better. What I love about FlyCast is the huge selection of channels out there. You can listen to diggnation, CBS, CNN, 60 Minutes, unlimited radio, talk, weather, traffic, and stations from all over the USA. Make sure you have a healthy data plan or are using WiFi when you’re running FlyCast. Maybe this is my time to hit the 6GB mark…who wants to try with me? ;)
