Web surfing blocks iPhone calls -- sorta
I'm thinking about buying an iPhone and I heard something about them that might be a deal breaker for me. My friend told me that if I'm surfing the Internet on the phone I won't be able to receive calls.
Is that true?
C.M., DallasTechnically it is true, but in reality it's not that big a deal.
The iPhone uses AT&T's Edge network for its communications.
Edge data uses what's called 2.5G technology. The "G" number, which indicates the generation of the technology, has to do with how much data the phone can upload or download at one time.
Most people were surprised Apple didn't introduce the iPhone on AT&T's 3G network.
The 3G network doesn't have the coverage area of AT&T's Edge network, but it does allow for simultaneous voice and data traffic because it moves data at speeds up to 2 megabits per second. Think of a 3G connection being about as fast as basic DSL service.
